VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.
From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for “medical reasons”. The clue to detecting the fake “dissident” is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal “dissident” was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.
One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.
MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.
Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.
Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled “Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?”, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.
Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's “reformed revolutionary”. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the “imam” on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.
He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following “hunger strikes”, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

An underground film showing the slaughter of Algerian soldiers is being
used as a recruitment tool for British Islamic radicals

The trail runs from a wet corner of a west London street to the dusty
mountains of eastern Algeria, from a garage on the Thames to the
Mediterranean, from a mosque off north London's Seven Sisters Road to
Osama bin Laden's training camps in Afghanistan.
In one direction the trail is a conduit for volunteers and money - both
heading for Islamist rebels fighting a brutal war against Algeria's
government. In the other direction flow political refugees, communiqués
boasting of the numbers of 'infidels' murdered each month and, towards
the end of last year, a single smuggled video.
Rumours of the video had been circulating for several weeks. There was
even talk about it in the bazaars of war-wracked cities in eastern
Afghanistan. It was reputed to be of appalling violence - and one of the
most effective recruiting tools ever used by a terrorist group. It was
also said to be circulating in the UK.
The Observer obtained the video last week from a contact within the
British Muslim community. It was worse than anything expected.
According to the badly printed cover, the video, simply entitled
'Algeria', had been prepared by the 'publicity service (audiovisual
section) of the Groupe Salafiste pour Prédication et Combat (Salafist
Group for Preaching and Fighting or GSPC)' - the most radical of the
Islamic terrorist groups who have been fighting the Algerian government
for more than 10 years.
The feared GSPC is one of the groups that has refused a recent
government amnesty and truce. It is also closely linked to Osama bin
Laden's al-Qaeda organisation and is thought to have been set up by some
of his closest lieutenants using the Saudi-born dissident's money.
According to security sources, the first copy of the GSPC video arrived
in the UK just a few days before the 11 September attacks. Since then,
bootleg copies have been passed around Britain's extremists who have
been anxious to play it to potential recruits.
Screenings have been arranged both in private homes and, often after
prayers, in mosques. Many showings have been timed so that young people,
students and schoolchildren, can attend. Several are alleged to have
taken place in Finsbury Park mosque in north London where the radical
cleric Abu Hamza often leads prayers.
There are fears that the video could have been used to indoctrinate
vulnerable young men who have come to the mosque seeking spiritual
guidance following 11 September.
'There are many people at the more radical mosques who come searching
for a purpose in life,' said one former MI5 agent who infiltrated
Finsbury Park mosque.
'They often know very little about Islam and trust the older men to show
them the way. But they are shown the path of violence.'
Both Richard Reid, who was overpowered as he tried to set off explosives
in his shoes on a Paris-to-Miami flight last December, and Feroz Abbasi,
the 22-year-old former computer student from Croydon who is currently
held in Guantánamo Bay prison camp by the Americans, attended Finsbury
Park. Abbasi's mother, Juma, last week accused Abu Hamza of brainwashing
her son after he had sought spiritual guidance from him 18 months ago.
Last week at the mosque, where worshippers once included Zacarias
Moussaoui, the suspected twentieth hijacker, and Djamel Beghal, believed
to have been bin Laden's European operations director, The Observer was
able to buy videos showing shocking footage from Afghanistan and Bosnia.
One video called The Mirror of the Jihad showed Taliban forces in
Afghanistan decapitating Northern Alliance soldiers with knives. It was
distributed by an Islamic organisation based in Paddington, London.
Another video, shot in Bosnia, advocated a 'jihad to wipe out atheism'.
Each cost £10.
Extremists are increasingly using videos as a means to drum up support
and publicise their cause. Last year an al-Qaeda video prepared by Osama
bin Laden's group in Afghanistan showing militants training cut with
pictures of Israeli soldiers firing on rioting teenagers in Gaza and the
West Bank was circulated between radicals worshipping at the Finsbury
Park mosque. In the video, bin Laden referred to 'spectacular events to
come'.
But none of the videos was as shocking - and as potentially dangerous -
as that obtained by The Observer .
The GSPC video starts with a flickering screen of Arabic script: an
injunction to 'Fight them until the sentence of God is carried out on
Earth.'
Then, with a soundtrack of chanted verses from the Koran, more commands
scroll across the screen. 'You have to kill in the name of Allah until
you are killed,' viewers are told. 'Then you will win your place forever
in Paradise. The whole Islamic world should rise up to fight all the
sick unbelievers. The flag of Jihad will be forever held high.'
The commentary continues: 'Our enemies are fighting in the name of
Satan. You are fighting in the name of God.'
Then clear, bright images take the place of the script. From the bushes
beside a remote mountain road, guerrillas watch the approach of a
government convoy. There is a huge explosion as the trucks hit a bomb,
and prolonged firing.
When the militants get to the scene of the blast they find carnage.
There are corpses strewn across the ground. One hangs over the tailgate;
where once there was a conscript's head there is a mess of bloody
matter. Another lies on the ground with his brains, on which the camera
lingers, spread around his shattered skull. A fighter nonchalantly fires
bullets into a corpse.
Then there is excited shouting as the militants notice that one soldier
is still alive. 'He is moving, he is moving,' calls out a fighter. A
militant calmly bends down and runs a knife across the wounded
conscript's throat. The images of the blood pumping from his severed
carotid artery is shown five times during the video. The throats of the
dead on the ground are then cut too.
Much of the video is less gruesome. A GSPC leader is shown planning an
attack and explaining his tactics to his troops. His men are shown
marching through the dusty scrubland of the Algerian hills. Others are
shown baking bread, making clothes or dividing weapons and ammunitions
seized from the dead government troops. They are show conducting a
bizarre ritual: lining up to be blessed by a comrade dressed in black
and representing the 'angel of death'.
But soon the video reverts to violence. Another attack is shown: an
ambush in which 12 government conscripts - ordinary young men doing
their national service - are killed and eight injured. The dogtags and
identity papers of the dead are held up to the camera.
'God loves people who kill in his name,' the commentary says. 'The
enemies of Islam are scared. The Jews and the Christians know that they
have lost [the war] and want to stop us spreading the truth.'
Algerian security officers learned about the tape soon after it surfaced
in the UK in September. However, although the Algerian ambassador made a
formal complaint to the Foreign Office, MI5 and the police are not
believed to have seized any copies of the tape or arrested any of those
involved in its distribution - despite their identities being widely known.
'We would clearly like to see such a powerful fundraising and recruiting
tool taken out of circulation as soon as possible,' said one Algerian
security source. It is thought that the same tape has been copied and
distributed in France - where there is a large Algerian community,
elsewhere in Europe and throughout the Middle East.
Algerian security services have been liasing closely with their British
counterparts. They told The Observer that the GSPC video has been
smuggled in and distributed by a group of Islamic activists based in
west and south London who have been living in the UK for several years.
The Algerian sources also revealed that there are more than 200
individuals in the UK who are linked to terrorist activities in Algeria
alone. Some are merely sympathisers or political activists, but the list
includes dozens of men implicated in the murders of policemen, soldiers,
government officials and innocent civilians.
Many have followed the typical path of Islamic radicals: spending years
in Afghanistan during the war against the Soviets before returning to
their home countries to lead extremist Muslim movements. They come to
Britain to flee the resultant government crackdowns.
British police are keen to interview Jordanian-born Abu Qatada, a senior
cleric at the Rossmore Road mosque near Baker Street in London. Qatada
was top of a list of suspects handed to the Home Secretary by the
intelligence services before Christmas to be detained under new
internment legislation.
According to one eyewitness, com muniqués from the GSPC and other groups
acclaiming the deaths of government troops in militant operations in
Algeria were, at least until recently, frequently posted on the
noticeboard at the Rossmore Road mosque.
British police, who have raided Qatada's West Acton home, are not the
only security agency hoping to trace the cleric. The Americans have
named him as a terrorist suspect and Jordanian police have alleged his
involvement in an abortive attempt to blow up hotels and other tourist
sites on Millennium eve. They claim the plot was masterminded by bin Laden.
The disclosure that the new Algerian tape, which is illegal in the UK,
was circulated with such ease will increase concern about Britain's
seeming inability to round up terror suspects here.
Last week, investigators in Spain said they had discovered that two
suspected al-Qaeda members arrested in Barcelona were in close contact
with other members of the group in Britain.
Court documents show that Najib Chaib, a Spaniard of Moroccan origin who
was arrested eight days ago in Barcelona, made several visits to London
where he met Qatada, who was described by Spanish judge Baltazar Garzón
as 'the spiritual leader of Mujahideen across Europe'. Qatada, 42,
denies all the charges against him. His lawyer says he is the victim of
a 'witch hunt'.
Arab veterans of the Afghan war in London say that, after being granted
asylum in the UK in 1993, Qatada became a magnet for leading dissidents
on the run from the Middle East and Pakistan. Fighters from conflicts in
Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt and Palestine flocked to his Islamic centre
in White City. In Hamburg, videos of Qatada's lectures were found in the
flat used by Mohamed Atta, who led the terrorist attacks on America.
Other Islamic tracts written by Qatada were found by The Observer among
the effects of fleeing al-Qaeda figures in Pakistan.
On Friday at Finsbury Park mosque hundreds of worshippers from scores of
countries came to pray. In the lobby two vendors sold militant
literature and videos with titles like 'Jihad in Afghanistan' and
'Terror in Chechnya'. Cassettes of Islamic militant scholar Ahmed Deedat
bore titles like 'Why Islam is the dominant religion' and 'The War
Against Rushdie' and there were several hundred cassettes of speeches
given by Abu Hamza on sale for £1.50 each.
Hamza, who lost one eye and a hand in a mine explosion in Afghanistan,
arrived a little after lunchtime, ready to deliver his Friday sermon -
the khutbah. 'We are under constant surveillance here,' he told his
supporters. 'But it is always the way with Islam - we have to fight for
what we believe in. Now, more than ever, we have to change people's
minds. We have to tell them the evils of democracy, capitalism and
communism.'
A few yards away, the videos were selling well.

Americans increasingly tuning into Islam, author says
An upsurge of interest in Islam is evident among everyday U.S.
citizens, says international lecturer and author Samar Jarrah.
"A huge portion of Americans are turning off their TVs and starting to
get an education either on their own by looking at Web sites and
reading books or contacting Muslims, as in our case," Jarrah told an
attentive audience Monday at the Mid-County Regional Library.
Her comments came days before her departure for Cairo and Amman,
Jordan, where she plans to lecture and present her 240-page book, "Arab
Voices Speak to American Hearts," published in May.
"Not a week goes by without a request for a speech or a request from a
reporter or a citizen for information on Islam," she said.
Jerry Maxwell was eager for more after having attended a six-series
course Jarrah and two colleagues presented on Islam at the library.
"It's quite interesting to know what a Muslim is and what he believes,"
said the retired 75-year-old native of Utica, N.Y. "This country
doesn't want to hear the other side. People are brainwashed by the
media -- by parts of the media."
Paul Andrew, who transported U.S. troops around the world for 15 years,
making more than 100 sorties to the Middle East, called the six classes
"very interesting, informative and enlightening."

On Saturday, Abu Omar al Baghdadi, Emir of the Islamic state of Iraq, released a 23 minute audio statement yesterday announcing his plan to counter the US troop surge. He claimed North Korea owes a debt to the Iraqi jihadists because without them they could not have conducted their nuclear test. He also claims that he expects the US to attack the Iranian nuclear facilities.

MI5, police and SAS practise for a 'Beslan' siege

The intelligence services fear that Britain could be subject to a Beslan-style siege, with multiple hostages forced to plead for their lives on camera.
Whitehall sources have said that the threat is considered so credible that MI5, the police and the SAS have conducted at least two mock counter-terrorism exercises to work out how to deal with such an eventuality.
The last exercise, shortly before Christmas, took place at an RAF base near Chester. Five police forces were involved in an operation that envisaged an international conference being stormed by terrorists, who then held a group of children hostage in a creche wired with explosives.
Operation Northern Synergy saw a number of police chiefs assume the Gold Command - ultimate responsibility for co-ordinating the response. The commanders liaised with the government's Cobra committee, which is activated during times of national crisis. In the scenario the terrorists were equipped with mobile phones and a satellite uplink that allowed them to beam pictures of the hostages on to television screens. The operation ended with a decision to send in the SAS.
'This scenario is something that is very much on the radar screen,' said one counter-terrorism source. 'We have envisaged a British Beslan for several years.' Beslan in south-west Russia was the scene of a horrific siege when on 1 September, 2004, 1,200 schoolchildren and adults were taken hostage by Muslim terrorists. The siege resulted in the security services storming the school and the deaths of 344 of the hostages.
Growing fears that domestic terrorists could seize hostages in Britain and parade them on television and websites were underlined last week when police conducted a series of raids across the West Midlands.

A prize-winning Iranian nuclear scientist has died in mysterious circumstances, according to Radio Farda, which is funded by the U.S. State Department and broadcasts to Iran.
An intelligence source suggested that Ardeshire Hassanpour, 44, a nuclear physicist, had been assassinated by Mossad, the Israeli security service.

"Giant achievements" by Iran will be unveiled by its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in the coming days, the Iranian Fars news agency reported on Saturday.
The Iranian news agency said an upcoming dramatic announcement on Iran's nuclear "rights" would be made on February 11. The report was accompanied by a series of announcements heralding alleged Iranian technological and medical breakthroughs, including an "AIDS cure."
Ahmadinejad's "administration is going to publicize the country's remarkable progresses and achievements within the coming days," the Fars news agency said.
"The Iranian president also reiterated that February 11 is the day when the Iranian nation's inalienable right to access and use nuclear technology will be established," the agency added.
"The Iranian nation will celebrate stabilization and establishment of its nuclear rights during the Ten-Day Dawn, (sic)" Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying. The "ten-day dawn" in early February marks the date of the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979.
"When a nation decides to stand on its own feet to climb up the peaks, God helps it and that nation will embrace victory," Ahmadinejad said.
The Iranian government's boasts of "great achievements" included an announcement on Saturday that Iranian scientists have "introduced an AIDS cure".
"After seven long years of arduous work, Iranian scientists here on Saturday introduced a herbal medicine which cures Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)," Fars reported.
"The drug named 'IMOD' is completely effective and safe with no proven side effects," Iran's Minister of Health Kamran Bagheri Lankarani claimed during a ceremony.
"The world should know today that the capable Iranian nation, relying on its own youths and scientists, has now conquered the peaks of knowledge and science," Ahmadinejad declared during his speech.

Islam¹s March Against the West

We gather here today to share information and knowledge. Intelligence
is not
merely cold hard data about numerical strength or armament or
disposition of
military forces. The most important element of intelligence has to be
understanding the mindset and intention of the enemy. The west has been
wallowing in a state of ignorance and denial for thirty years as Muslim
extremist perpetrated evil against innocent victims in the name of
Allah.
I was ten years old when my home exploded around me burying me under
the
rebel drinking my blood to survive as the perpetrators shouted Allah
Akbar.
My only crime was that I was a Christian living in a Christian town. I
learned at 10 years old the meaning of the word "infidel." I had a
crash
course in survival not in girl scouts, but in a bomb shelter where I
lived
for seven years in pitch darkness, freezing cold, drinking stale water
and
eating grass to live. At the age of thirteen I dressed in my burial
clothes
going to bed at night waiting to be slaughtered and by the age of 20 I
had
buried most of my friends who were killed by Muslims. We were not
Americans
living in New York, or Britons in London, we were Arab Christians
living in
Lebanon.
As a victim of Islamic terror, I was amazed when I saw Americans
waking up
on September 12th 2001 asking themselves "Why do they hate us?" The
psychoanalyst experts were coming up with all sort of excuses as to
what did
we do to offend the Muslim World? If America and the west were paying
attention to the Middle East they would not have had to even ask the
question. Simply put, they hate me and you because we are defined in
their
eyes by one simple word, "infidels."
Under the banner of Islam "la, ilaha illa allah, muhammad rasoulu
allah,"
there is no God but Allah, Muhammad is his prophet, they murdered
Jewish
children in Israel, massacred Christians in Lebanon, killed Copts in
Egypt,
Assyrians in Syria, Hindus in India, and expelled almost 900,000 Jews
out of
Muslim lands. We Middle Eastern infidels paid the price then and for
their
indifference and shortsightedness infidels worldwide are paying the
price
now.
Tolerating evil is a crime. Appeasing murderers doesn't buy protection,
it
earns disrespect and loathing in the enemy's eyes. Apathy is the weapon
by
which the west is committing suicide. Political correctness is the
shackles
around our ankles by which Islamists are leading us to our demise.
America and the West are doomed to failure in this war unless they
stand up
and identify the real enemy. Islam. You hear about Wahabbi and Salafi
Islam
as the only extreme form of Islam. All the other Muslims are wonderful
moderates. I hope the pictures of the irrational eruption of violence
from
around the world in reaction to the cartoons of Mohammed from burning
embassies, to calls to butcher those who mock Islam, or to warnings to
be
prepared for the real holocaust, has given you a glimpse into the real
face
of the enemy. The news pictures and video of these events represents a
canvas of hate decorated by different nationalities who share one
common
ideology of hate, bigotry and intolerance derived from one source.
Authentic
Islam. An Islam that is awakening from centuries of slumber to
re-ignite its
wrath against the infidel and dominate the world. An Islam which has
declared "Intifada" on the West.
America and the west can no longer afford to lay in their lazy state of
overweight ignorance. The consequences of this mental disease are
starting
to attack the body and if they don't take the necessary steps now to
control
it, death will be knocking soon.
If you want to understand the nature of the enemy we face, visualize a
tapestry of snakes. They slither and they hiss, and they would eat each
other alive, but they will unite in a hideous mass to achieve their
common
goal of imposing Islam on the world. This is the ugly face of the enemy
we
are fighting.
We are fighting a powerful ideology that is capable of altering human
basic
instincts. An ideology that can turn a mother into a launching pad of
death.
A perfect example is a recently elected Hamas official in the
Palestinian
Territories who raves in heavenly joy about sending her three sons to
death
and offering the ones who are still alive for the cause. It is an
ideology
that is capable of offering highly educated individuals such as
doctors, and
lawyers far more joy in attaining death than any respect and stature,
life
in society is ever capable of giving them.
The United States has been a prime target for radical Islamic hatred
and
terror. Every Friday, mosques in the Middle East ring with shrill
prayers
and monotonous chants calling death, destruction and damnation down on
America and its people. The radical Islamists¹ deeds have been as vile
as
their words. Since the Iran Hostage crisis, more than three thousand
Americans have died in a terror campaign almost unprecedented in its
calculated cruelty along with thousands of other citizens worldwide.
Even
the Nazis did not turn their own children into human bombs, and then
rejoice
at their deaths as well the deaths of their victims. This intentional,
indiscriminate and wholesale murder of innocent American citizens is
justified and glorified in the name of Islam.
America cannot effectively defend itself in this war unless and until
the
American people understand the nature of the enemy that we face. Even
after
9/11 there are those who say that we must ³engage² our terrorist
enemies,
that we must ³address their grievances². Their grievance is our freedom
of
religion. Their grievance is our freedom of speech. Their grievance is
our
democratic process where the rule of law comes from the voices of many
not
that of just one prophet. It is the respect we instill in our children
towards all religions. It is the equality we grant each other as human
beings sharing a planet and striving to make the world a better place
for
all humanity. Their grievance is the kindness and respect a man shows a
woman, the justice we practice as equals under the law, and the mercy
we
grant our enemy. Their grievance cannot be answered by an apology for
who or
what we are.
Our mediocre attitude of not confronting Islamic forces of bigotry and
hatred wherever it raised its ugly head in the last 30 years, has
empowered
and strengthened our enemy to launch a full scale attack on the very
freedoms we cherish in their effort to impose their values and way of
life
on our civilization.
If we don't wake up and challenge our Muslims community to take action
against the terrorists within it, if we don't believe in ourselves as
Americans and in the standards we should hold every patriotic American
to,
we are going to pay a price for our shortsighted delusion.
For the sake of our children and our country, we must wake up and take
action. In the face of a torrent of hateful invective and terrorist
murder,
America¹s learning curve since the Iran hostage crisis is so shallow
that it
is almost flat. The longer we lay supine, the more difficult it will be
to
stand erect.

UK officials suspect jihadist mole in Ministry of Defense
"Gee, how could this possibly happen?" asks Doc Washburn, who kindly sent this in. Surely you don't mean to suggest that a Muslim working in the British Ministry of Defense might have jihadist sympathies! Why, consider all the screening British officials do to make sure that Muslims they hire don't harbor such sentiments!
Of course, actually they don't screen for that at all.
Meanwhile, a new drain on the British economy will be the expense of guarding Muslim soldiers so that they aren't murdered by other Muslims. When your soldiers have to be protected by armed guard, something is seriously wrong.
"Fears of terror mole in UK defence," by Daniel McGrory and Russell Jenkins in The Australian:
DEFENCE chiefs have launched an urgent investigation into how a gang of suspected Islamic terrorists obtained a list of names and addresses for 25 serving British Muslim soldiers as part of an alleged plot to kidnap and behead a serviceman.
Senior officers are alarmed that the hitlist includes home addresses as far apart as Glasgow and the West Country.
A priority will be to ensure that no Ministry of Defence "mole" provided the suspected terror cell with such top-secret personal information.
All those on the hitlist are understood to be serving members of the regular army....
Police in the West Midlands were given seven more days yesterday to hold nine men arrested in Birmingham on Wednesday. The men are being held in connection with a suspected plan to abduct and murder a serving soldier, whose execution was to be broadcast on the internet.
Defence officials would not say if all those named on the hitlist had been warned. Senior MoD officials met yesterday to consider whether new security provisions were needed to protect the 330 Muslims serving in the armed forces and their families.
New guidelines are expected to be issued to Muslim personnel in the next few days about their personal safety. A defence official said last night: "Such sensitive information about our personnel is kept under conditions of strict confidentiality, so we obviously want to discover how a list of names and home addresses was reportedly compiled."

Iranian general supervised Hamas arms, source says

A Palestinian source has said that the Iranian general nabbed in Gaza by Palestinian security officers supervised the manufacturing weapons and explosives for Hamas. The source told Ynet on Friday that the expert was in charge of several labs in the university, mainly chemistry labs in which he trained Hamas activists, most of them women, manufacturing the explosives.
At least five Iranian citizens were arrested during a raid at the Islamic University, a Hamas stronghold in Gaza City. One of the Iranians committed suicide during the raid. Six to nine Palestinians were killed in the raid, sources said.
The raid on the Hamas-linked university in Gaza was carried out by national security forces affiliated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Hundreds of weapons and a lathe for the production of Qassam rockets were seized in the raid.

British Muslims criticise media for anti-terror reporting
They could be holding meetings about how they will redouble efforts to root out such plots and eradicate jihadist sentiments from among Muslims in Britain. Instead, this.
I have put in a couple of links below to show you the perspective of the people AFP interviewed for this story.

LONDON (AFP) - Muslim leaders in the British city of Birmingham rounded on the media after nine men were arrested in anti-terror raids on suspicion of an "Iraq-style" plot to kidnap and behead a Muslim soldier.
Speakers at the meeting at Birmingham Central Mosque called for fairness in the way the arrests were reported and for gagging orders to be placed on the names of those detained....
Businessman Tariq Mahmood, from the predominantly Muslim Alum Rock area of the city where several of the raids took place, said: "There is no evidence that we know of, but pure speculation, statements from the home secretary, houses raided and the media frenzy.
"The media will go away, the police will move on but we will feel the effects of this farce for years to come."
Imran Waheed, from the Islamist Hizb ut-Tahrir party, added: "The brothers who have been arrested are innocent until such event a just conviction is secured. At the moment, we have sensationalist reporting and trial by media."
Moazzam Begg, a British former Guantanamo Bay detainee, was also angry at the media coverage.
"I hope that when the truth manifests itself that, metaphorically, heads will roll with the people who put out these stories in the first place," he told the audience.

Outrage at the murder of the Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink deepened yesterday after the media showed images of the teenage murder suspect posing with the Turkish flag and security officials after his arrest.
The government launched an inquiry into the footage, which newspapers denounced as "hero treatment" of the 17-year-old suspect.
Ogun Samast confessed to the January 19 killing of Dink, a 52-year-old journalist who had angered Turkish nationalists with assertions that the mass killings of Armenians around the time of the first world war amounted to genocide.
The images showed Mr Samast holding a Turkish flag and posing with officers, some in uniform, shortly after his arrest on January 21. Behind him a poster carries the words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey: "The nation's land is sacred. It cannot be left to fate."
The Turkish media was outraged. "Shoulder to shoulder with the triggerman: suspected killer Samast was given the hero treatment," the Sabah daily reported on its front page.

Imam prays to stop ‘oppression and occupation’ at Democratic National Committee meeting

Hot Air has video of an invocation at the winter meeting of the Democratic National Committee by Husham Al-Husainy, Imam of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center, a Shi'ite mosque in Dearborn, Michigan.
Here's a transcript:
In the name of God the most merciful, the most compasionate. We thank you, God, to bless us among your creations. We thank you, God, to make us as a great nation. We thank you God, to send us your messages through our father Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed. Through you, God, we unite. So guide us to the right path. The path of the people you bless, not the path of the people you doom. Help us God to liberate and fill this earth with justice and peace and love and equality. And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation. Ameen.
In mentioning "Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed" I expect that he sounded wonderfully generous and ecumenical to the assembled Democrats. But in fact, he was almost certainly invoking them in their capacity as Muslim prophets: it is mainstream Islam that all of these were prophets who taught Islam, and that the followers of Moses and Jesus corrupted their teachings to create Judaism and Christianity. So what seems to be a gesture of ecumenical generosity is actually a declaration of religious imperialism and the delegitimization of other religions.
Also, imagine if a Christian priest or minister had prayed at a DNC meeting that those attending be guided away from the path of those doomed by God. In this, in any case, the Imam is echoing the Fatiha, the first sura of the Qur'an and most common prayer of Islam. It asks Allah: "Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray." The traditional Islamic understanding of this is that the "straight path" is Islam -- cf. Islamic apologist John Esposito's book Islam: The Straight Path. The path of those who have earned Allah's anger are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians. The classic Qur'anic commentator Ibn Kathir explains:
Allah asserted that the two paths He described here are both misguided when He repeated the negation `not'. These two paths are the paths of the Christians and Jews, a fact that the believer should beware of so that he avoids them. The path of the believers is knowledge of the truth and abiding by it. In comparison, the Jews abandoned practicing the religion, while the Christians lost the true knowledge. This is why `anger' descended upon the Jews, while being described as `led astray' is more appropriate of the Christians. Those who know, but avoid implementing the truth, deserve the anger, unlike those who are ignorant. The Christians want to seek the true knowledge, but are unable to find it because they did not seek it from its proper resources.
This is why they were led astray. We should also mention that both the Christians and the Jews have earned the anger and are led astray, but the anger is one of the attributes more particular of the Jews. Allah said about the Jews,

The attribute that the Christians deserve most is that of being led astray, just as Allah said about them,

It is interesting to see the Democrats standing with heads bowed piously while the Imam Husham Al-Husainy prays, in veiled terms to be sure, for their conversion to Islam, and oh yes, for the destruction of Israel ("And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation").
UPDATE: Some people have questioned my quote from Ibn Kathir above, asserting that it is just one "extremist" interpretation, and that I am ignoring others. Allow me therefore to note that most Muslim commentators believe that the Jews are those who have earned Allah's wrath and the Christians are those who have gone astray. This is the view of Tabari, Zamakhshari, the Tafsir al-Jalalayn, the Tanwir al-Miqbas min Tafsir Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Arabi, as well as Ibn Kathir. One contrasting, but not majority view, is that of Nisaburi, who says that "those who have incurred Allah's wrath are the people of negligence, and those who have gone astray are the people of immoderation."

Israeli foreign and security officials deny knowledge of Egyptian
charge of Israeli spy ring

In Cairo, State Prosecutor Hisham Badawi said Saturday that an
Egyptian-Canadian, Mohamed Essam Ghoneim el-Attar, 31, had been arrested as an
Israeli spy. He accused three Israelis of recruiting Attar when he
lived in Turkey in Aug. 2001, identifying them as Daniel Levi, Kemal Kosba
and Tuncay Bubay. They were still in Turkey and Canada and warrants had
been issued for their arrest. Attar is said to have been paid $56,000
to spy on Egyptians and Arabs in Turkey and Canada, including their bank
accounts, as well as recruiting spies for the ring. Attar was arrested
when he came home for a visit a month ago.

LONDON: British army intelligence sources have said that terrorists
attacking British bases in Basra, Iraq, were using aerial footage
displayed by the Google Earth internet tool to pinpoint their attacks.
Documents seized during raids on the homes of insurgents last week
uncovered print-outs from photographs taken from Google.
The satellite photographs show in detail the buildings inside the bases
and vulnerable areas such as tented accommodation, lavatory blocks and
where lightly armoured Land Rovers are parked. Written on the back of
one set of photographs taken of the Shatt al Arab Hotel, headquarters
for the 1,000 men of the Staffordshire Regiment battle group, officers
found the camp's precise longitude and latitude.
"This is evidence as far as we are concerned for planning terrorist
attacks," said an intelligence officer with the Royal Green Jackets battle
group. "Who would otherwise have Google Earth imagery of one of our
bases?" "We are concerned that they use them to plan attacks. We have
never had proof that they have deliberately targeted any area of the camp
using these images but presumably they are of great use to them."
"We believe they use Google Earth to identify the most vulnerable areas
such as tents."
One soldier has been killed in the past six months following a mortar
attack and there have been several injuries. Since the maps were found
intelligence chiefs have been keeping track of where rounds land to see
if the insurgents are using them to pinpoint weakly protected areas.
The British camps experience mortar and rocket attacks on a daily
basis. Salvos are fired from up to four miles away and are increasingly
accurate. On Saturday, three rounds were fired into Basra Palace at a block
close to where some reporters were staying. No one was injured.
Intelligence sources also believe that the insurgents are receiving
more training and weaponry from Iran to improve their fighting skills. But
the British are gathering more intelligence on mortar crews and
launching several "strike operations" to detain the operators. Anyone with the
internet can sign up to Google Earth and can receive very detailed
imagery down to identifying types of vehicles.
