World Terrorism: News, History and Research Of A Changing World #6 Disinformation, Inc.
Global Politician/Ocnus.Net ^ | Dec 17, 2006 | Professor Daniel M. Zucker

Posted on 12/17/2006 4:03:30 PM PST by DAVEY CROCKETT

VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.

From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.

Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for “medical reasons”. The clue to detecting the fake “dissident” is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal “dissident” was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.

One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.

MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.

Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.

Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled “Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?”, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.

Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's “reformed revolutionary”. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the “imam” on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.

He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following “hunger strikes”, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

International Terrorism: The Communist Connection Revisited
The Institute of World Politics ^ | 6/1/'02 | J. Michael Waller

Posted on 01/25/2007 4:56:46 PM PST by Zionist Conspirator

Twenty-five years ago, Stefan Possony posited the then-radical thesis that the Soviet Union was behind much of the world’s growing terrorist problem, and that otherwise independent terrorist organizations operated in international networks. Possony’s book, International Terrorism: The Communist Connection, published in 1978,[1] blazed a trail that other scholars, journalists, investigators, and intelligence officers would follow.

Polite company would seldom entertain such an idea of global, Soviet-sponsored terrorist networks, at least in the days of détente and Jimmy Carter and America’s post-Vietnam malaise. The CIA called Possony’s notion nonsense. Nobody in the prestige press of foreign policy establishment, it seemed, was willing or able to take the idea seriously.

I thought so, Las Vegas is called an International airport.

Not a surprise, makes me want to see the rest of the last Zawahiri release.

Take a look at the googles I just posted, the article is proof of all the wild things we have found and looked at.........

The part about Ramsey Clark near the end, was good to see in print, I am too tired, too attack it with google, right now.

Venezuela may ask U.S. envoy to leave

By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez warned Thursday that the U.S. ambassador could be asked to leave the country if he continues "meddling in Venezuela's affairs."

The outspoken Venezuelan leader lashed out after William Brownfield said U.S. companies and investors must receive a fair price for their shares of Venezuela's largest telephone company when Chavez's government nationalizes it.

"If you continue meddling in Venezuela's affairs, first of all, you are violating the Geneva agreements and getting yourself involved in a serious violation and could ... be declared a persona non grata and would have to leave the country," Chavez.

[snipped]

"I think it can be a process that concludes in a satisfactory manner for all those involved, that's my hope," he said.

Chavez _ a close ally of Cuban leader
Fidel Castro _ also has said he plans to nationalize the electricity sector, and take state control of four lucrative oil projects and the natural gas sector.

Relations between Caracas and Washington have been tense

IRAN: NUCLEAR SCIENTIST DIES UNDER MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES

Tehran, 25 Jan. (AKI) - One of Iran's top nuclear scientists, Ardeshir Hassanpour, a professor at the university of Shiraz, has died under mysterious circumstances. Hassanpour's death was announced by Iranian state television, a week late, on Thursday. No reason was given for his death. The scientist was proclaimed the best scientist in the military field in the Islamic Republic in 2003. Hassanpour directed the centre for nuclear electromagnetic studies he had founded in 2005.

He had also co-founded the center for atomic research in Isfahan, the most important in the country, Iranian state television reported.

Last year, Ardeshir Hassanpour was awarded Iran's most prestigious scientific award, the Kharazmi prize.

U.S. homeland security chief sees terrorism getting worse
www.chinaview.cn 2007-01-25 23:29:32

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Five years after the
United
States started its global "war on terror" following the Sept. 11
attacks, the anti-terrorism situation is getting worse, the U.S.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on Thursday.

"That's even getting worse ... the stakes are increasingly
becoming
higher and higher as the technology increases," Chertoff told a panel
discussion on the comprehensive response to terrorism hosted by the
World Economic Forum in Davos.

Chertoff said that in the 21st century, even a single individual
is
able to use high-tech tools, such as weapons of mass destruction
(WMDs),
in a way to cause a type and magnitude of destruction that would have
been unthinkable a century ago.

The stakes are so high that stronger enforcement of the
international non-proliferation regime is needed, Chertoff said,
emphasizing the aim is to prevent WMDs falling into hands of the
irresponsible.

"I think the issue becomes not necessarily creating a bureaucratic
structure ... but in some points exerting the will to impose
consequences on those state actors or non-state actors who are not
going
to comply with the rules," Chertoff said.

The Secret Sandy Risked His All For

© Jack Cashill
January 18, 2007 - WorldNetDaily.com

This is the first in a three-part series on Samuel “Sandy” Berger.

If not the most skillful of embezzlers, Samuel “Sandy” Berger is a far more formidable character than the media would have us believe. When he made his now storied sorties into the National Archives, he risked his career and his reputation in so doing, and he knew it. Rest assured, he would not have done so were the secrets to be preserved not worth the risk of pilfering them.

True to form, the major media refuse to even ask the most fundamental question: just what secrets would justify so much personal exposure. Having read the report on Berger by the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform, I am more confident than ever that I know the answer.

As the House Report makes clear, Berger did not exactly welcome this assignment. This confirms my suspicions. The archivists told the House Committee, in fact, that Berger “indicated some disgust with the burden and responsibility of conducting the document review.”

Apparently, he did not have much choice in the matter. Former President Bill Clinton had, according to the report, “designated Berger as his representative to review NSC documents.” Berger was Clinton’s go-to inside guy.

In his first term, Clinton had hired this millionaire trade lawyer and lobbyist to be deputy national security advisor, not because of Berger’s foreign policy experience, which was negligible, but because of his political instincts, which were keen and reliable. Clinton entrusted Berger with some very sensitive assignments, particularly in relationship to China, and rewarded him for his trust with the job of National Security Advisor in his second term. This job does not require Senate confirmation. It is unlikely that Berger could have gotten any job that did.

As we now know, Berger made four trips to the National Archives. He did so presumably to refresh his memory before testifying first to the Graham-Goss Commission and then to the 9/11 Commission. Berger made his first visit in May 2002, his last in October 2003.

As we now know too, he stole and destroyed an incalculable number of documents during these four visits. “The full extent of Berger’s document removal,” reports the House Committee, “is not known and never can be known.”

As the House Report clarifies, “Archives staff would have no way to know” if any part of a given National Security Council (NSC) document was removed. Further, had Berger removed papers from a Staff Member Office File—these more loosely enumerated than the NSC documents—“It would be almost impossible for the Archives staff to know.”

Among his more flagrant acts of criminal mischief, Berger purloined some highly classified documents and stashed them “at a construction site where they could have been found by anyone.” This behavior does not exactly classify as “inadvertent,” the media’s original characterization of Berger’s motivation.

As the House Report also establishes, the FBI never questioned Berger about those first two visits nor submitted him to a polygraph about any of the visits as his plea deal required. The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) only source of information about possible theft during Berger’s first two visits was the man himself, and Berger has proved almost comically unreliable.

In fact, Berger has changed his story about the documents as often as his boss did about Monica, in both cases to adapt to the emerging evidence. Berger even refused to be interviewed by the House Committee, the one honest enterprise in the whole investigation.

We know too that on his first visit, according to Archives staff, “Berger was especially interested in White House terrorism advisor Richard Clarke’s personal office files.” Again, this confirms my suspicions. According to the Committee, “Had Berger seen ‘a smoking gun’ or other documents he did not want brought to an investigatory panel’s attention, he could have removed it on this visit.”

The much-discussed Millennium After Action Review was hardly the gun that smoked. In fact, the DOJ saw the Millennium Review as “beneficial to the Clinton administration” in that it made them look “engaged” in the war on terrorism.

The Millennium Review made the news only because it was the first document that Berger got caught swiping, then on his third visit. The benign nature of this review led the DOJ to conclude that Berger took the documents for his “personal convenience,” and the media predictably played right along.

To understand what that “smoking gun” might have been and how it involved Clarke and Berger, let us turn to the fateful summer of 1996. At that time Col. Buzz Patterson carried the "nuclear football" for President Clinton. Given his security clearance, Patterson was entrusted with any number of high security assignments. One morning in "late-summer,” Patterson was returning a daily intelligence update from the Oval Office to the National Security Council when he noticed the heading "Operation Bojinka."

As Patterson relates, "I keyed on a reference to a plot to use commercial airliners as weapons." As a pilot, he had a keen interest in the same. "I can state for a fact that this information was circulated within the U.S. intelligence community," Patterson writes, "and that in late 1996 the president was aware of it." The President’s hand written comments on the documents verified the same.

The Philippine police had uncovered plans for aerial assaults as early as January 1995 and shared those plans with the FBI almost immediately. The man responsible for those plans was Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the first World Trade Center bombing and very possibly an Iraqi contract agent. His accomplice was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the mastermind of 9-11 and allegedly Yousef’s uncle.

Understandably, the 9-11 Commission was very concerned about who knew what when in regards to the use of planes as bombs. Bush National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice, was asked on her first real question: “Did you ever see or hear from the FBI, from the CIA, from any other intelligence agency, any memos or discussions or anything else between the time you got into office and 9-11 that talked about using planes as bombs?”

Rice said no. She was likely telling the truth. Clarke had acknowledged as much during his earlier testimony. He admitted that the "knowledge about al-Qaeda having thought of using aircraft as weapons" was relatively old, "five-years, six-years old." He asked that intelligence analysts "be forgiven for not thinking about it given the fact that they hadn't seen a lot in the five or six years intervening about it."

Before the summer Olympics of 1996, in fact, Clarke had warned security planners about the possibility of Islamic terrorists hijacking a 747 and flying it into Olympic Stadium. Two days before the start of those Olympics, on July 17, Saddam’s National Liberation day, with the U.S Navy on the highest state of alert since the Cuban missile crisis, TWA Flight 800 blew up inexplicably off the coast of Long Island.

The fact that the President was reviewing Bojinka plans soon after the destruction of TWA Flight 800 makes the versions of those plans with his hand written notes on them all the more critical. If found and revealed, they would, at the very least, acknowledge that the Clinton administration had a keen interest in the possible use of planes as bombs five years before September 11.

That interest obviously died, and Clarke served as chief assassin. Among other roles, it fell upon this Clinton sycophant to devise the “exit strategy” that transformed a seeming aeronautical assault on TWA Flight 800 into a “mechanical failure.” In his book Against All Enemies, he takes full credit for this bit of aviation alchemy.

Clarke was likely also responsible for getting the CIA and FBI to breach the storied “wall” and work together on the creation of the notorious “zoom-climb” animation. This animation showed a nose-less 747 rocketing vertically 3200 feet into space and confusing onlookers. The FBI used it to discredit all 270 of its eyewitnesses to an apparent missile strike.

The media swallowed the zoom-climb as uncritically as they had the “mechanical failure.” The New York Times did not bother to interview any of the 270 relevant eyewitnesses. Say what you will about former Timesman Jayson Blair, but he at least would have made one up.

Berger played a key role in the TWA Flight 800 sleight-of-mind as well. On the night of July 17, 1996, Berger was among the scores of staff summoned to the White House for an emergency meeting—a first for a domestic airplane crash. Col. Patterson was there as well but was kept fully out of the loop. When I asked Patterson if anyone was holed up in the family quarters with the president, he could tentatively identify only one person. And that person was Sandy Berger, then just the deputy national security advisor. Berger’s boss, the less “reliable” Tony Lake, was relegated to his own office.

A logical deduction from existing evidence is that Clarke put the “planes-as-bombs” talk on hold for the five or six years after the TWA Flight 800 disaster lest such talk evoke unanswered questions about that fateful crash. Berger’s task, I surmise, was to make sure all references to Bojinka, planes-as-bombs, and/or TWA Flight 800 were rooted from the Archives, especially any documents with hand-written notes that led back to co-conspirators Berger, Clarke, and Clinton.

On Friday April 1, 2005, the Department of Justice announced its embarrassingly lenient plea deal with Berger. The timing was more than fortuitous. On March 31, Terri Schiavo had died. On April 2, Pope John Paul II would die. DOJ could not have chosen a day better calculated to give a casually indifferent media an excuse for ignoring a bombshell of a story.

"It remains unclear," asked the Washington Post about the Berger story line as it existed in April 2005, "why he destroyed three versions of a document, but left two other versions intact."

As I responded at the time, the answer to this question was too obvious to ask–handwritten notes on a document make one version entirely more dangerous than an identical document without those notes.

The Wall Street Journal, among other media, did not take kindly to ruminations like mine above. I will flatter myself that its editors had me at least somewhere in mind when they opined on April 8, 2005, “Some people won't let a bad conspiracy theory go.”

The Journal continued in full hauteur, “We're referring to those who loudly assert that former NSC adviser Sandy Berger was trying to protect the Clinton Administration when he illegally removed copies of sensitive documents from the National Archives in late 2003.”

The Journal cited Chief of DOJ’s Public Integrity Section, Noel Hillman, who claimed that “no original documents were destroyed, and that the contents of all five at issue still exist and were made available to the 9/11 Commission.”

According to the Journal, the “confusion” stemmed from the “mistaken idea” that Berger destroyed handwritten notes by various Clinton Administration officials in the margins of these documents. This, said Hillman, was simply an "urban myth."

As we know now, the only urban myth in play was that presumed Republicans like Hillman were, as Berger claimed, trying “to assassinate his character to pursue their own ends.” In fact, they were covering for him. “Nothing was lost to the public or the process,” said Hillman of Berger’s theft in April 2005. This was transparently false.

The House Committee found the DOJ to be “unacceptably incurious” about investigating Berger’s time in the Archives, especially his first two visits. Although Hillman would publicly claim that Berger “did not have an intent to hide any of contents of the documents or conceal facts from the [9/11] commission,” Hillman had been told on at least four prior occasions that the opposite was true.

According to the House Report, “The 9/11 Commission was specifically interested in the office files of White House terrorism advisor Richard Clarke, and never was told that Berger had access to Clarke’s original office files on May 30, 2002, and July 18, 2003.”

If not exactly apologizing to us humble conspiracists, the Journal has at least admitted its error. Hillman was indeed dissembling, Journal editors acknowledged last week: “Mr. Berger was in a position to remove documents from Mr. Clarke's files, and thanks to lax security, breaches of protocol and undue deference on the part of Archives staff, we may never know whether Mr. Berger took documents other than the five he's admitted to removing.”

The media will assuredly “never know” for one good reason: they refuse to look. If they do, they will discover a rat’s nest of conspiracy that will make Watergate seem as consequential as a Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction.
Next week--why the Bush Justice Department felt compelled to suppress this, the great untold story of our time.

Bombs found in home
By Katie Stallcup
The Natchez Democrat

NATCHEZ — Four homemade bombs were found at an Adams County residence Sunday, according to sheriff’s office reports.

A 16-year-old was arrested late Monday afternoon on charges of unlawful possession of explosives, Maj. Jody Waldrop of Adams County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The juvenile’s stepmother called the sheriff’s office after she found an explosive device inside an English textbook in her stepson’s room. The book’s pages had been cut out to fit the device, Waldrop said.

When they arrived at the house, officers found three more devices in the juvenile’s room.

The juvenile had recently moved to Vidalia to live with his mother and stepfather.

His stepmother “was in the process of cleaning his room up,” Waldrop said. “She found (the book and explosive) between the mattresses in his room.”

The Vidalia Police Department and Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office were contacted and searched the juvenile’s current residence and Vidalia High School, where he attended Waldrop said. No other devices were found.

“From what the investigation revealed, he was upset with a grade he’d received, but at this time, we have no reason to believe he intended to harm anyone,” Waldrop said.

The explosives were built sometime in early 2006, he said, and had been at that location since then.

“We called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and they came down (Monday) and detonated the devices in a rural part of Adams County,” Waldrop said.

Although Waldrop said he could not give a specific strength of the explosives, they were enough to seriously hurt someone.

“All the explosives recovered were capable of doing harm to human beings,” he said.

The juvenile was released by the youth court to the custody of his parents, Waldrop said. He said he did not know when a hearing would take place.

“This is a serious matter,” Waldrop said. “Even though no one was hurt, there was the potential for tragedy. We were fortunate the parent notified us and we were able to intervene before anyone could be purposefully or accidentally hurt by the bombs.”

He said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests might be made in the future.

Anyone with information related to the case should call the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

Iranians Overwhelmingly Reject Bin Laden

http://theseoultimes.com/ST/?url=/ST/db/read.php?idx=4668

Iranians Overwhelmingly Reject Bin Laden
Islam & West Can Find Common Ground: Polls
An in-depth survey of public opinion in Iran reveals that most Iranians
want their country to have the capacity to enrich uranium for nuclear
energy, but a majority also agrees that Iran should comply with the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which forbids Iran from developing
nuclear weapons. A parallel poll in the United States shows that a
majority of Americans are ready to accept a deal allowing Iran to
engage
in limited enrichment if it also agrees to give UN inspectors full
access to ensure Iran is not developing nuclear weapons.

The concurrent surveys of public opinion in Iran and the United States
were conducted by WorldPublicOpinion.org in partnership with Search for
Common Ground. Steven Kull, who directed the surveys, comments, "The
polls show that majorities in both countries are deeply suspicious of
each other, but nonetheless agree on a wide range of issues."

Iranians and Americans support international non-proliferation rules as
well as a stronger United Nations and reject Osama bin Laden.
Majorities
or pluralities favor a variety of steps to improve U.S.-Iranian
relations and neither side believes conflict between Islam and the West
is inevitable.

The poll of the Iranian public was unprecedented in scope. The
questionnaire included 134 substantive questions on a wide range of
international issues, administered in face-to-face interviews in rural
and as well as urban areas. Both the Iranian and U.S. surveys were
probability-based national samples of 1,000 respondents or more.

Nuclear Non-Proliferation

An overwhelming 84 percent of Iranians say it is very important for
Iran
to have the capacity to enrich uranium, despite the fact that the UN
Security Council has called for Iran to cease uranium enrichment.
Presented a list of incentives that might persuade Iran to give up
enriching uranium, a majority or plurality rejects them all as not
significant.

However, two-thirds of Iranians (66%) endorse Iran's participation in
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty even when reminded that it
prohibits Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Only 15 percent want
Iran to withdraw from the treaty.

U.S. respondents were asked if they would support an agreement allowing
Iran to enrich uranium to the very low levels necessary to produce
nuclear power but not the high levels required to produce nuclear
weapons. In return, Iran would be obligated to afford U.N. inspectors
full access to ensure that these enrichment levels were not exceeded.
Fifty-five percent believe such a deal would be a good idea, including
53 percent of Republicans and 62 percent of Democrats. Thirty-eight
percent say this would be a bad idea.

Islam and the West

Asked more broadly about relations between Islamic countries and the
West, both publics reject the idea that conflict is inevitable.
Iranians
and Americans were asked to choose between two statements: "Islamic and
Western religious and social traditions are incompatible with each
other" and "most people in the West and the Islamic world have similar
needs and wants, so it is possible to find common ground." Only one in
four Iranians (24%) and more than one in three Americans (36%) believe
that the cultures are incompatible. Majorities of Iranians (54%) and
Americans (56%) instead agree that there is common ground.

Although Iran has faced considerable pressure from the UN Security
Council on nuclear issues, the Iranian public still expresses strong
support for the United Nations. Seventy percent of Iranians (compared
with 66% of Americans) believe the United Nations should become
"significantly more powerful in world affairs." Fifty-four percent
think
that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)---the UN
organization
charged with enforcing the NPT---is having a mostly positive influence
in
the world (10% view it negatively).

Attitudes toward Each Other, Bin Laden, Terrorism

Iranians and Americans have generally unfriendly feelings toward each
other. Most Iranians have negative opinions of the United States (76%)
and the current US government (93%) while their attitudes toward the
American people are divided (45% favorable, 49% unfavorable). Most
Americans also have unfavorable views of Iran. More than three-fourths
(78%) see the Iranian government negatively while more than half (59%)
feel the same way about the Iranian people.

Nonetheless, both publics are interested in improving U.S-Iranian
relations. Large majorities of Americans and majorities or pluralities
of Iranians endorse a variety of ways to strengthen ties, including
increased trade (Iranians 52%, Americans 65%), direct talks between the
two governments on issues of mutual concern (Iranians 48%, Americans
79%), greater access for each other's journalists (Iranians 51%,
Americans 68%), and more cultural, educational, and sporting exchanges
(Iranians 46%, Americans 72%).

Iranians and Americans express concern about international terrorism.
Seven in ten Iranians view international terrorism as an important
threat to their country's vital interests, including 56 percent who see
it as a critical threat. Only 12 percent call it "not important." More
than nine in ten Americans see international terrorism as an important
threat, including 68 percent who see it as critical.

Osama bin Laden is disliked by large majorities in both countries.
Three
out of four Iranians (74%) view bin Laden unfavorably, (68% very
unfavorable). Only 10 percent see the al Qaeda leader in a favorable
light. Americans, unsurprisingly, are almost unanimously negative
toward
bin Laden. Ninety-four percent have an unfavorable opinion (89% very).

Larger majorities of Iranians than Americans reject terrorist attacks
against civilians, though both publics are quite opposed. Asked whether
"bombing and other types of attacks intentionally aimed at civilians"
can be justified often, sometimes, rarely or never, 80 percent of
Iranians select never. Forty-six percent of Americans say such attacks
can never be justified and 27 percent say they rarely can.

A modest majority of Iranians makes an exception for some Palestinian
attacks against Israeli civilians, however. Fifty-three percent say
they
are "sometimes justified" (41% never). Americans reject both Israeli
attacks on Palestinian civilians (71%) and Palestinian attacks on
Israeli civilians (80%).

The polling in Iran was fielded by an independent Iranian agency from
October 31 -- December 6, 2006. In the United States, Knowledge
Networks
executed the WPO polls during late November and early December, 2006
using its nationwide panel, which is randomly selected from the entire
adult population and subsequently provided with internet access, if
needed. For information about this methodology, go to
www.knowledgenetworks.com/ganp. The study was conducted in partnership
with Search for Common Ground with support from the Ford Foundation,
the
Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the United States Institute of Peace, the
Carnegie Corporation (US polling only), and the Open Society Institute.

Download Zawahiri video with English subtitles

BREAKING: New video tape from Zawahiri: "If we are secure, you might be secure, and if we are safe, you might be safe. And if we are struck and killed, you will definitely"

The release of a video tape from Al Qaeda second in command Dr. Ayman al Zawahiri appears imminent.

The new video, entitled "The Correct Equation", features Zawahiri in dark robe and white turban against a dark background and contains English subtitles.

In the video, Zawahiri specifically addresses President Bush's plan for Iraq. He also specifically addresses the American people, saying "Security is a shared destiny. If we are secure, you might be secure, and if we are safe, you might be safe. And if we are struck and killed, you will definitely - with Allah's permission - be struck and killed".

The video also calls for the release of Al Qaeda members in American prisons, specifically mentioning the Blind Sheikh, Dr. Omar Abdul Rahman.

The video appears timed to coincide with the State of the Union Address,

Transcript - The Correct Equation: Sheikh Ayman Al Zawahiri

The first minute and a half are short clips from further into the video, following by a graphic dated Dhu al-Hijjah 1427 AH. (On the Islamic calendar, Dhu al Hijjah month is from 12/22/2006 to 01/19/2007.)

A transcript of the subtitles follows:

In the name of Allah and all praise due to God and May peace and prayers be on the messenger of God, and on his family companions and allies. Muslim Brothers everywhere, peace be upon you and the mercy of God and his blessings.

Bush raved in his latest speech and among his ravings was that he will be sending 20,000 of his troops to Iraq so I ask him why send 20,000 only – why not send 50 or 100 thousand?

Aren’t you aware that the dogs of Iraq are pining for your troop’s dead bodies?

Send your entire army to be annihilated at the hands of the Mujahedeen to free the world from your evil and theirs because Iraq, the land of the caliphate and Jihad is able to burry ten armies like yours with God’s help and power.

Also among his ravings is that he has deprived Al-Qaeda of a safe haven in Afghanistan, the entire world bears witness to his naked barefaced lie because al-Qaeda and the Taliban under the command of the commander of the Faithful Mullah Omar are the ones who have deprived America of save haven in Afghanistan by the grace of God until they had no choice but to bring the forces of NATO through coercion and under duress to seek protection behind them

And I address the American people saying to them I know that most of you don’t understand the language of religion, morals and principles and instead understand the language of running after pillage and plunder and desires so that’s why I address with what you understand

I tell you if you want to live in security you must accept the facts of what is happening on the ground, and reject the fantasies with which Bush tries to deceive you, you must honestly try to reach a mutual understanding with the Muslims for then and only then you might enjoy security, if however you continue with the policy of Bush and his gang, you will never even dream of peace

Security is a shared destiny, if we are secure, you might be secure and if we are safe, you might be safe, and if we are struck and killed, you will definitely with God’s permission be struck and killed. This is the correct equation

So try to understand it, if you understand

You have cooperated in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Traitorous movements and leaders who trade their religion and values and with some of the states around it, ye they have only brought you more ruin, it is imperative that you understand the realities of history and religion as they really are and not as Bush’s Buffoons try to present them to you.

Ask your experts and historians they either hide the facts from you or reveal them in embarrassment, you are facing Islamic rage and facing the Jihadi awakening of the Muslim Ummah and what awaits you should you press on- is much worse than anything you have yet seen

As for my Muslim Ummah I tell it, it is the duty of every Muslim today to bear arms or to service and support those who are bearing arms and this service and support must be in accordance with what those who bear the arms ask of him, not in accordance with the justifications of those who flee from bearing arms, every Muslim today is directly responsible for defending Islam, Islam’s homeland and the Islamic Ummah and he is responsible for the efforts to liberate the Muslim captives foremost of whom is Sheikh Omar Abdl al-Rahman from the prisons of the crusaders and their helpers and we reaffirm to the families of the Guantanamo captives who are demonstrating these days in Cuba, that we –with God’s permission, have not and will not forget our captives and that their liberation is a debt on our necks and that the Americans must expect to pay the price for everything they have done to them

My Muslim Ummah it isn’t possible that Bush send his soldiers to kill the Muslims which we flee from the battle in the mazes of political ploys and elections on the basis of secular constitutions. There is no excuse for anyone today to stay behind the battle, and the Muslims must deafen their ears to all who attempt to spread in them the calls to betrayal, inaction or inclination to the corrupt rulers

They must deafen their ears to the calls of the scholars of beggary who serve those who serve Bush. The calls of the religion sellers who entered Kabul on the back of American tanks, and the calls of those who paint themselves with sectarianism and are prisoners of the spaces which America and its corrupt agents drew up for them

It isn’t possible that Bush send his soldiers to kill the Muslims while we continue to be prisoners restrained by the shackles if the organizations and foundations from entering the field of battle. We must destroy every shackle which stands between us and our performing this personal duty

The reason for joining the Islamic organizations and foundations is to attain obedience to God so if these organizations become an obstacle to performing God’s obligations then we must free ourselves from their shackles and confinement

My Muslim brothers everywhere

The enemy has admitted before the friend that those who broke the back of the Americans and the crusaders in Afghanistan and Iraq and defeated the American plot which wanted to swallow the region the states of the region are the Mujahedeen those who believe in God as their lord, Islam as their religion and Mohammed peace be upon him as their prophet and messenger those who rejected national affiliation, nationalist fanaticism, the Sykes Picot border and international law

They O my Muslim are your righteous sons and the true defenders of your honor, religion and sanctities , so O My Muslim Ummah, isn’t it time that we reject and disbelieve in the narrow patriotism which has torn apart the Ummah just as an international crusade is being waged against it which brings together Jews and crusaders from every corner of the world

Isn’t it time we reject the hateful patriotism which makes some regard Mohammed Dahlan and Mahmoud Abbas as their brothers when both of them know full well that they are Palestine selling secularist traitors who are hostile to the Sharia and loyal to America and Israel?

Allah has forbidden us in his Quran to take them or their like as friends or allies. The Truth, exalted is his He, said “You shall not find any people who believe in God and the last day loving those who oppose God and His messenger even if they be their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their clan.”

How can we possibly regard the sellers of the religion and land as our brothers?

My Muslim brothers in Palestine, Al-Aqsa will only return through Jihad in God’s path, and Jihad in God’s path is only achieved when the fighting is for the supremacy of God’s word, fighting solely for God’s sake which disowns the secularist traitors even if they be from our people and clan and is loyal to the believing Mujahedeen even if they have no ties of kinship or proximity to them. Anyone who takes a look at the secular nationalist movements in Palestine sees an example of what most if not all, the nationalist and leftist movements in the Arab world have come to. They have submitted to international law, agreed to give up the land which they used to consider the nexus of brotherhood and affiliation joined the American train and satisfied themselves with the ground reality imposed by Washington

That why I call on all the Arab nationalists and leftists to come back to Islam, the religion of honor, dignity and freedom because it is the real safeguard against humiliation, repression and invasion. It is the revealed religion of Arab the religion of truth and justice which prohibits submission to created beings and fear of them, it is the religion of submission to God alone and seeking his pleasure and his alone. And that’s why you will only find honor in Islam.

Nationalists split the Muslim Ummah into Arabs, Persians, Kurds, Turks, Afghans and others then split the Arabs into Egyptians, Moroccans, Syrians, Iraqis, Lebanese, Saudis, Yemenis and others and thus provided the best possible service to the crusade invading the Islamic world and instead of the Ummah uniting to confront the colonialist campaign, as it previously united to face the crusade and Mongol invasions, the Ummah fell apart and fought itself, hasn’t the time also come for us to reject and disbelieve in the international law which imposed on us the Sykes Picot borders and the existence of Israel in one of the holiest places of Islam, imposed on us the crusader presence in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and south Lebanon and even imposed on us the pulling back of the real borders of Lebanon to 30 kilometers inside Lebanon

The one who agrees to resolution 1701 is approving the international crusader military presence in south Lebanon and is approving the isolation of the Mujahedeen in Palestine from their brothers in Lebanon

Accepting this resolution is an historic fall, which cannot be justified or excused

What a huge difference between the stance of those who accepted Resolution 1701 and the stance of the most sincere one, Abu Bakr which whom God was pleased, who when the Arabs apostatized, said ”By God, if they refuse to give me a hobble, which they used to give the messenger of God, I will fight them over their refusal.”

And what a huge difference between the stance of those who accepted Resolution 1701 and the stance of the Imam Husayn bin Ali (God was pleased with them both) who refused to give himself up saying, “no by God, I will not give them my hand like the meek and lowly, nor consent like a slave”.

And before I end my talk, I repeat my invitation to Bush to send his entire army to Iraq, because the lions of Islam are lying in wait to send them back to him killed and injured with God’s help. I also can’t forget to give him the good news that he has embroiled his Ethiopian slaves in a definite disaster in Somalia, and that the Mujahedeen will break their backs with God’s help and power and they wont be cried over by the Americans who pushed them into harms way while continuing to command them from afar for them to die in their place.

At the close of my speech, I remind the Muslim Ummah of its duty towards its sons, the Mujahedeen in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Somalia, Algeria and all lands of Islam.

Back them with men, money, opinion, expertise and prayers

And I mention specifically the two Islamic emirates in Afghanistan and Iraq. For they are waging the battle in the two most crucial fields against the Zionist crusade. The Truth, Exalted is he, says” When a chapter comes down enjoining them to believe in God, and to fight with His messenger, those with wealth and influence among them ask you for exemption and say leave us be with those who sit (at home).” They are happy to be with those (the women) who remain behind. Their hearts are sealed and so they understood not but the messenger and those who believe with him, fight with their wealth and their persons, for them are all good things and it is they who will prosper, God has prepared for them gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein. That is the supreme triumph.”

And our final prayer is that all praise is due to God, lord of the worlds, and may peace and prayers be on our master Mohammed and upon his family and companions

Al-Qaida deputy issues new warning
Al-Zawahri threatens ‘far worse’ reprisals if U.S. policy remains unchanged
Reuters
Updated: 2:38 p.m. MT Jan 24, 2007
DUBAI - Al-Qaida second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri warned Americans of a reprisal "far worse than anything they have seen" if Washington did not change its policies toward Muslim states.

"You are facing the Islamic rage ... what awaits you, should you press on (with current policies), is far worse than anything you have seen," Zawahri said in a video posted on the Internet on Wednesday.

Leaders of the militant group which carried out the Sept. 11, 2001 aircraft attacks against U.S. cities often argue that its "terrorism" is justified as a way to change pro-Israel U.S. policies and to punish Washington for its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"I will talk to you in a language you understand; If you want to live safely you have to accept reality and reject the illusions that (U.S. President George W.) Bush is trying to deceive you with," he said in the video.

Part of the video was posted earlier this week on the Web site of the U.S.-based SITE institute.

"You have to try your utmost to reach an understanding with the Muslims, only then you will enjoy security. But if you continue with the policy of Bush and his gang then you won't dream of it," he said.

Zawahri also vowed retaliation against Ethiopian troops for helping the Somalia's interim government rout rival Islamist.

"The Mujahideen will break their backs with God's power and help," Zawahri said.

Ethiopia said on Tuesday its forces began leaving the Somali capital. It has said it does not plan to stay after it completes its mission.

The Egyptian militant also urged Palestinians to abandon President Mahmoud Abbas as a "traitor" and said he had sold his religion and Palestinian land.

Five Turks charged in murder of editor

Five Turks charged in murder of editor

Reuters

Thursday, January 25, 2007

A Turkish prosecutor has said five people were charged in the murder of
Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, Turkish media reported on
Thursday.

Istanbul's chief prosecutor Aykut Cengiz Engin charged Ogun Samast, a
17-year-old unemployed man from the Black Sea coast, with premeditated
murder and membership of an armed group.

Four others were charged with forming an armed organization and
incitement to murder.

Samast, who is reported to have been close to an ultranationalist group
in his home town Trabzon, has admitted to shooting Dink in daylight as
he left his newspaper Agos in Istanbul last Friday.

The murder brought 100,000 mourners to Istanbul's streets for Dink's
funeral on Tuesday and has reignited debate about hardline nationalism in
a country seeking European Union membership.

"From the quality and the nature of the crimes attributed to the
suspects it is clear the result emerges that they formed an armed group,"
Engin told reporters late on Wednesday in comments reported by the NTV Web
site.

Engin said the fact that the suspects were remanded in custody did not
mean that a case would be opened soon. Prosecutors will now prepare an
indictment against the suspects.

Samast has confessed to killing Dink for "insulting" Turks in his
writings and statements on the massacres of Armenians during World War One
-- a highly sensitive issue in Turkey.

Yasin Hayal, a known nationalist militant, has admitted to inciting his
friend Samast to kill Dink, the police said.

Hayal served 11 months in jail for the 2004 bombing of a McDonald's
restaurant in Trabzon.

Dink, who worked for reconciliation between Christian Armenians and
Muslim Turks, had been prosecuted for his views on the massacres of
Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915.

He was among intellectuals, including Nobel Literature Prize winner
Orhan Pamuk, who have been prosecuted under laws restricting freedom of
expression in Turkey.

Turkey denies claims by Armenia and other countries that 1.5 million
Armenians died in a systematic genocide at Turkish hands, saying large
numbers of both Christian Armenians and Muslim Turks perished during the
break up of the Ottoman Empire.

Death toll from Guinea violence up to 59

Associated Press

Thursday, January 25, 2007

By TODD PITMAN, Associated Press Writer

Battles between security forces and protesters in Guinea earlier this
week killed at least 59 people, almost double the toll previously
reported, the Health Ministry said Thursday.

Forty-four people were killed during Monday's violence in Conakry, the
capital, said Dr. Sidiki Diakite, a senior Health Ministry official
helping oversee the count. The other 15 were slain the same day elsewhere
in the West African nation, he said.

The demonstrations turned deadly when security forces opened fire on
rock-hurling protesters, who called on long-ruling President Lansana
Conte to give up power to a transitional government.

Health Ministry figures showed 233 other people were wounded, most by
gunshots. Those included 173 in Conakry and 50 elsewhere.

The figures did not identify the casualties, but the vast majority are
believed to have been civilians either protesting or caught in the
crossfire. No deaths among security forces have been reported.

The protests were the culmination of a two-week general strike that
began Jan. 10 and presented the gravest threat yet to the rule of Conte,
who seized power in a 1984 coup. The strike has paralyzed the nation,
closing the port, emptying streets and shuttering most private
businesses.

Though the strike is still on, tensions eased considerably Wednesday
after an announcement that Conte had agreed to name a prime minister _ in
what his critics hope would be a step toward relinquishing some power.

On Thursday, a commission including government officials, union leaders
and representatives of civil groups met to work out what powers the new
prime minister should have. The commission is supposed present its
proposal to Conte soon.

The true death toll from Monday's violence may never be known.
Residents said some of those slain were not brought to hospitals, but swiftly
buried by their families. Muslim custom in Guinea requires the dead be
buried within 24 hours.

Earlier this week, Amnesty International said it had counted more than
30 dead since the strike began.

A senior official of the International Committee of the Red Cross in
Conakry had put the nationwide death toll at 35, with 24 dead in Conakry
and 11 others killed in the nation's interior. He declined to be named,
saying he was not authorized to speak to the press. It was not
immediately possible to reconcile the figures with those of the Health
Ministry.

A doctor at Donka hospital, where most of the casualties were brought,
said 50 fatalities were registered at Donka alone. He declined to be
named for reasons of protocol.

Doctors there had previously listed 22 dead. They said Thursday the
number had risen because some wounded had died. They also said that in the
hectic hours following Monday's violence, they could not accurately
assess the toll.

The wounded lay in rooms crammed with three beds each. Many appeared to
have been shot in the legs.

Union chiefs leading the strike earlier this month had initially called
for Conte to step down. More recently, they've said that he could
retain nominal power if he hands over the daily running of Guinea to a
transitional government.

Many residents are angry over what they call government corruption and
misrule, which they blame for leaving much of the country without
adequate water, power or employment.

Many worry that Conte's resignation or death could create a power
vacuum, plunging the country into civil war. The ailing head of state is in
his mid-70s and reportedly suffering from a heart condition.

Although Guinea's population of 10 million is impoverished, the nation
has half the world's reserves of bauxite, a material used to produce
aluminum.

Scholar and Columnist Dr. Mamoun Fandy: "If the Muslim Brotherhood,
i.e., Hamas Wins in Palestine - They Will Set the Muslim Brotherhood in
Egypt at the Top of Egypt's Political Pyramid"

To view this Special Dispatch in HTML, visit:
http://www.memri.org/bin/opener_latest.cgi?ID=SD144007 .

In an article in Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, titled "What will Happen if the
Muslim Brotherhood Takes Control of Palestine?", Egyptian-born scholar
and
columnist Dr. Mamoun Fandy(1) writes about the possibility of a Muslim
Brotherhood takeover in Egypt and Syria.(2) According to Dr. Fandy, the
rise to power of Hamas, which is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim
Brotherhood, will strengthen the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

The following are excerpts from the article:

"Palestine, as a Symbol, Remained the Monopoly of Arab Nationalism –
Until Hamas Came to Power"

"Israel occupied and is still occupying the land of Palestine.
Nevertheless, Palestine, in the symbolic sense, remained the monopoly
of Arab
nationalism – until the Hamas movement came to power. After the rise
of Hamas – which, it must not be forgotten, is the Palestinian branch
of the Muslim Brotherhood organization – the terms of the discussion
on the [Palestinian] problem changed from pan-Arab nationalist terms to
religious terms, in the Muslim Brotherhood version [of the religion].

"The struggle today has become a struggle over who will capture
Palestine as a symbol – the Muslim Brotherhood, as represented by
Hamas, or
the nationalists, as represented by Fatah. The struggle for the
liberation of Palestine as a territory has dropped to second place,
after the
struggle to liberate Palestine, as a symbol, from the pan-Arab
nationalists and transfer this holy of holies of Arab politics to the
Muslim
Brotherhood.

"What, in effect, is the significance of the Muslim Brotherhood's
conquest of Palestine as a symbol?

"For 50 years, the Arab people gathered behind the nationalist
[pan-Arab] slogan 'No voice is louder than the voice of war' – [which
refers
to] the use of external [issues, such as the struggle against external
enemies] – for defending the domestic [that is, for the defense of
the regime at home]. In addition, [during] these 50 years, the Arab
governments were extorted by some Palestinian leaders, who exported the
Palestinian tragedy to [those government] in order to incite their
peoples."

"Giving a Religious Character to the Palestinian Problem Will Transform
It from a Resolvable Territorial Struggle to a Religious Struggle That
Cannot Be Resolved"

"At that time, the incitement was nationalist [in character], while
today – after the Muslim Brotherhood has conquered a significant part
of
the symbolic Palestine – the incitement has become Islamist, and the
domestic has become commingled with the external. This is because the
structure of the Muslim Brotherhood's ideological discourse is not
based
on the separation of the domestic and the external; this is because
their ideology transcends the borders of [particular Arab] states.
Hasn't
the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt said that he had no
objection to having [even] a Malaysian Muslim rule Egypt, as long as it
was
not ruled by a Coptic Egyptian? Likewise, the Muslim Brotherhood
conquest of the symbolic Palestine means giving the [Palestinian]
problem a
religious character – and herein lies the danger.

"First of all, giving the Palestinian problem a religious character
will lead to a Malaysian Muslim having more rights in Palestine than a
Christian Palestinian. Likewise, it will transform [the Palestinian
problem] from a resolvable territorial struggle into a religious
struggle
that cannot be resolved... With regard to the regional level, I would
like
to explain why giving the Palestinian problem a religious character is
dangerous for two important countries in the Arab world, [namely] Egypt
and Syria."

"Whoever Reads the Egyptian Press Today Cannot But Notice that Egypt is
Living in the Muslim Brotherhood Era"

"The success of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine means turmoil in
Egypt. Egypt is today witnessing a fierce battle pitched between the
ruling National [Democratic] Party and the banned Muslim Brotherhood
party,
and it appears that the battle is going to the Muslim Brotherhood. In
light of the storm of responses to Egyptian Culture Minister Farouq
Hosni's statements about the hijab,(3) it became clear that [the number
of]
Muslim Brotherhood [supporters] inside the National Party might be
greater than [the number of] members in the banned [Muslim Brotherhood]
organization [itself], and that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated
into all Egypt's state apparatuses.

"The Egyptian press is perhaps the best reflection of this
infiltration: The front and back pages of Egypt's government papers
belong to the
ruling party, while the 20 inside pages of every paper belong to the
Muslim Brotherhood – and they do what they want with them, [via] their
correspondents, theoreticians, and propagandists. Whoever reads the
Egyptian press today cannot but notice that Egypt is living in the
Muslim
Brotherhood era."

"The Muslim Brotherhood Has Taken Over Egypt's Domestic Arena"

"As was clarified to me by a member of the National Party, 'There is
[only] one party in Egypt, and that is the Muslim Brotherhood.' For
more
than 30 years, the Muslim Brotherhood has been gaining control over
Egypt's domestic arena, its streets, its institutions, and its press,
and
nothing stands between it and [full] control, except for foreign
issues, the first of which is the Palestinian problem. If the Muslim
Brotherhood in Palestine [i.e. Hamas] wins, they will set the Muslim
Brotherhood in Egypt at the top of Egypt's political pyramid; when
[Hamas leader,
Palestinian Prime Minister] Isma'il Haniya comes to Egypt, he will go
to the Cairo branch of the Muslim Brotherhood offices, instead of
meeting with the senior officials of the Egyptian state. Likewise, we
will
hear Haniya defending from Gaza the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt,
bestowing upon them the legitimacy of the Palestinian problem – which
in the
Arab mentality is above all criticism."

"Syria is a Candidate for Takeover by the Muslim Brotherhood"

"Syria particularly is a candidate for takeover by the Muslim
Brotherhood. The legitimacy of the ruling secular Ba'th party in
Damascus is
supported by two Islamist crutches: Shi'ite and Sunni. The first is
embodied by Hizbullah. (In a way unprecedented in the history of Syria
during
the era of Assad Sr. and Assad Jr., Syrians today wave the picture of
Hassan Nasrallah along with that of their president.) The second crutch
is the Hamas movement, represented by [movement] leader Khaled Mash'al,
who resides in Damascus.

"If the Palestinian problem is given a religious character, in
accordance with the Muslim Brotherhood's ideas, Assad will lose both of
these
crutches. He may fall, and Syria will fall with him, into the hands of
the Muslim Brotherhood, who went through blood-soaked periods during
the
era of Assad Sr., and who doubtlessly aspire [to capture power] in
Damascus. Perhaps today the Syrian regime is gaining tactical
advantages by
means of Khaled Mash'al, but these [same advantages] may, in the short
or medium term, [end up being] a reason for its collapse."

"Al-Jazeera is the Channel of the Muslim Brotherhood"

"The Muslim Brotherhood has at its disposal trans-border media, from
newspapers to satellite channels, which have taken over the minds of
millions – not only in Egypt and Syria, but throughout the entire Arab
world. These are media that are tried and [ideologically] guided, that
level accusations of heresy and treason against those who disagree with
them...

"'[Al-Jazeera] is the channel of the Muslim Brotherhood," said the
well-known Fatah [leader] Muhammad Dahlan, as he described Al-Jazeera
TV,
which is today incontestably the biggest Arab news channel. If the
Muslim Brotherhood takes over the symbolic Palestine, the Muslim
Brotherhood
channel [formerly Al-Jazeera] will serve as a propaganda outlet for the
new religious symbolism of the Palestinian problem.

"Al-Jazeera wastes no time, and it is already propagandizing for
[Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood leader] Mahdi 'Akef and the [Muslim
Brotherhood]
organization, at the expense of the Egyptian state; for [Syrian Muslim
Brotherhood leader Ali Sadr Al-Din] Al-Baynouni and his party, at the
expense of the Syrian state; and for the Muslim Brotherhood in Algeria
at the expense of the Algerian state. If you watch a debate program
presented on [Al-Jazeera] by a [certain] non-Muslim host, you will be
amazed at the supreme effort he makes to defend the Muslim Brotherhood,
and
you'll think that by the time the program is over, he will be reciting
the Muslim oath of allegiance.(4)

"The Muslim Brotherhood takeover of the symbolic Palestine will not
liberate the land of Palestine – not before the Muslim Brotherhood
subjugates the entire Arab world to its rule. The Muslim Brotherhood
prefers
to eliminate the nearby enemy [the existing Arab states] in order to
prepare the means for facing the distant enemy [Israel]..."

Pakistani Islamists rally against mosque demolitions
By AFP
Middle East Times
Published January 24, 2007

Thousands of Islamic activists rallied in the Pakistani capital Wednesday to protest against the demolition of two mosques that authorities said were built in violation of the law.

"Down with [President Pervez] Musharraf," the crowd of around 5,000 demonstrators chanted, condemning what they say are the pro-American policies of the military strongman.

The mostly bearded protestors marched from the city center and dispersed peacefully at a nearby market while hundreds of riot police armed with batons kept a tight vigil.

Police armored cars guarded the city's diplomatic enclave amid fears that the crowd might try to storm it as they did during protests in February 2006 against Danish newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

The capital's administration last week demolished two mosques built on land "grabbed" by Islamists and served 15-day notices on 10 other places of worship to vacate their premises.

"Demolishing holy places is inviting the wrath of God and all this is being done on the orders of Musharraf, who is an American agent here," Islamist MP Maulana Abdul Malik charged amid slogan-chanting by the crowd.

Demonstrators carried banners demanding that the mosques be rebuilt immediately and that the government should withdraw demolition orders for other mosques and Islamic seminaries.

A leader of Pakistan's powerful alliance of religious Islamic parties, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal or United Action Front, said that if the government did not halt the demolition campaign the people of the city would stop it by force.

"I warn the government: stop demolition of the mosques, otherwise the people will rise," Mian Mohammad Aslam, who is also a local MP, told the gathering amid shouts of "Allahu Akbar [God is great]."

The government has also ordered the closure of an Islamic seminary for girls in the capital run by hardline Islamic cleric Rashid Ghazi. The government said in 2005 that Ghazi was associated with Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda network.

Last week hundreds of girls from the school briefly occupied a government-run library in protest against the order.
