World Terrorism: News, History and Research Of A Changing World #6 Disinformation, Inc.
Global Politician/Ocnus.Net ^ | Dec 17, 2006 | Professor Daniel M. Zucker

VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.

From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.

Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for “medical reasons”. The clue to detecting the fake “dissident” is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal “dissident” was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.

One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.

MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.

Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.

Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled “Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?”, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.

Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's “reformed revolutionary”. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the “imam” on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.

He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following “hunger strikes”, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

German Foreign Minister in Guantanamo scandal

[Other german news insist that Kurnaz indeed was in 2001 on his way to
a
Taleban training camp in Afghanistan. His ticket was paid with an ATM
card of a German in contact with the Taleban and another suspect
traveling with him was arrested when trying to leave Germany at
Frankfurt airport. No english source available by now. - So much for

German Foreign Minister in Guantanamo scandal

Pressure is mounting on German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier
over a scandal involving a former inmate of the Guantanamo Bay
detention
camp. It is claimed the early release of Murat Kurnaz from the prison
was blocked by Berlin and that Steinmeier played a central role.

A German parliamentary committee is investigating allegations that the
previous government did not accept a US offer to release Kurnaz in
2002,
after it was established he had no links to terrorism. The European
Parliament has made the accusation as part of its inquiry into the
so-called CIA renditions affair.

In response Steinmeier told an EP committee that the German government
of the time took decisions over the Kurnaz case that were motivated by
Germany's security needs, but were legal. He added that it would be
wrong to say that the responsibility for Kurnaz's suffering lay with
the
German government.

The German-born Turkish national was arrested in Pakistan in 2001. He
was eventually released five years later. At the time, Steimeier was
chief of staff in the Social Democrat-led administration of former
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Australia investigates 'al-Qaeda' threat to paper

SYDNEY (AFP) - A man claiming to be an al-Qaeda operative has
threatened
to blow up the offices of an Arabic-language newspaper in Australia and
kill its editor-in-chief, the target of the threat has said.

Police and intelligence officers have reportedly launched an
investigation into threats against the offices of al-Furat, which has
published articles supporting the execution of former Iraqi dictator
Saddam Hussein.

"We never thought that ... a man would be carrying threats on behalf of
al-Qaeda in Australia," the paper's Iraqi-born editor-in-chief Hussein
Khoshnow told the Australian Associated Press.

"He (the caller) is supporting Saddam Hussein and his brother and
speaking on behalf of al-Qaeda in Australia," said Khoshnow. "It's a
bit
mixed and really confusing, but that's what he's saying."

Jamali criticises intelligence agencies

Jamali criticises intelligence agencies

ISLAMABAD: The acting Senate chairman, Jan Muhammad Jamali, on Tuesday
criticised intelligence agencies task for compiling wrong intelligence
reports on senior government officials ahead of their appointments to
sensitive posts. "The government should maintain a merit while making
important official appointments, and it must not consider unnecessary
intelligence reports in this process," he said. Jamali said that if the
country was to be run smoothly, there should be no intelligence
reporting on government officials before their appointments to
sensitive
posts. Earlier, the opposition staged a token walkout, saying that not
a
single of the 52 federal secretaries was from Balochistan. Treasury
members from Balochistan supported this, and said the government should
be grilled for ignoring officials from the largest province. The
minister in charge of the Establishment Division, Dr Sher Afgan Niazi,
told the house that currently, only one official (BPS 21) from the
District Management Group with a Balochistan domicile, Sheikh Ghazanfar
Hussain, was posted as acting secretary of the Parliamentary Affairs
Division. Treasury Senator Pari Gul Agha criticised the federal
government for ignoring Balochistan in every sector. naveed siddiqui

Communist rebels worried over US role in counterinsurgency

Agence France-Presse

Posted date: January 23, 2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Communist guerrillas in the Philippines on Tuesday expressed concern that the United States would take a more direct role in fighting the long-running insurgency.

Manila has acknowledged receiving "intelligence input" from the US, which maintains military advisers in the southern Philippines, that led to the killing of the two senior leaders of the Abu Sayyaf group over the past two months.

The US role in the strikes against the Abu Sayyaf could become "an entry point for its more strategic perspective of applying this in increasingly greater scale" against the leftist rebels, their spokesman Gregorio Rosal said.

In a statement, Rosal alleged that the Pentagon was exploiting military exercises with Filipino forces in the Philippines as well as apparent "humanitarian assistance."

"US military forces have repeatedly trespassed in revolutionary areas where New People's Army (NPA) forces are strong, to gain intelligence data and familiarity with the physical and social terrain," he added.

The 7,000-member NPA is the military wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. It has been waging a Maoist rebellion since 1969. Both groups are listed in the US State Department's "foreign terrorist organization" blacklist.

On Monday President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo hailed the "strategic alliance" between Manila and Washington, its former colonial ruler, as key to defeating terrorism.

"Our strategic relationship with the United States has always been a leading point for Philippine and regional security," she said in a statement.

"Our victories against the Abu Sayyaf highlight the success of our training and intelligence fusion programs with the United States, and these are reinforced by broader programs of peace and development, trade and investment that enlarge the space of Philippine security while constricting the space for terror and transnational crime."

The military announced this month that it had killed key Abu Sayyaf leader Abu Sulaiman, whom it said was the architect of the firebombing of a ferry on Manila Bay in February 2004 that claimed more than 100 lives.

US forensics authorities also recently confirmed that the body of an Abu Sayyaf militant who was killed on the southern island of Jolo in December was that of top Abu Sayyaf leader Khadaffy Janjalani.

TSA worker at Atlanta airport sentenced

http://atlanta.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2007/01/22/daily15.html?surround=lfn

TSA worker at Atlanta airport sentenced
Atlanta Business Chronicle - 1:33 PM EST Tuesday

A former Transportation Safety Administration inspector at
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is headed to prison
for
filing false reports.

U.S. District Judge Jack T. Camp sentenced Robert Wilson, 51, of
Ellenwood, Ga., to four months in federal prison to be followed by two
years of supervised release, and ordered him to perform 50 hours of
community service. Wilson was convicted in August, when he entered a
guilty plea to all eight counts of the indictment.

Wilson was a TSA Inspector at Hartsfield-Jackson from October 2004 to
February 2005. His job duties included making inspections of specified
secured areas in and around the airport. Wilson's duties also required
that he write up reports of the inspections that he performed.

From about November 2004 to January 2005, Wilson filed at least eight
inspection reports with TSA that contained false information. For
example, Wilson falsely claimed that he inspected gates that were in
fact closed and inaccessible due to construction. Wilson also falsely
reported that he had made an inspection of an airline to ensure its
compliance with security regulations. Wilson also falsely reported that
he performed some inspections with TSA employees who, according to time
and attendance records, were not on duty at the time.

"The TSA is entrusted with keeping our airports safe and secure," said
U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias. "Robert Wilson betrayed this mission
when he failed to perform important safety inspections but filed false
reports claiming that he had. As a result, he is now a convicted felon
and will go to prison."

[Do you recall the hunt for the "Green Birds"????

Found them.

This is the end of the article.
granny]

d.
The "Federal Eagle" stamp used in the anthrax mailings was a blue-green.

It was widely published among the militant islamists that martyrs go to paradise "in the hearts of green birds."

In the very interview in which they admitted 9/11, and described the codes used for the four targets for the planes, the masterminds admitted to the Jenny code, the code for representing the date 9/11, and used the symbolism of the "Green Birds."

Osama Bin Laden later invoked the symbolism in his video "The 19 Martyrs." A FAQ on the Azzam Publications website explained that "In the Hearts of Green Birds" refers to what is inside.

Whatever your political persuasion, and whatever disagreements about individual issues relating to due process and civil liberties, the FBI and CIA deserve our support. We are, after all, facing this threat together.

First, the nature of such an investigation is that we lack sufficient information to second-guess (or even know) what the FBI, CIA and Postal Inspectors on the Amerithrax Task Force are doing.

Media reports are a poor approximation of reality because of the lack of good sources. Indeed, there has been compartmentalization and divergent views even within the Task Force.

Second, hindsight is 20/20.

Third, now that the leaks relating to US scientist Dr. Steve Hatfill seem to have long since been plugged, it is not likely we could do better in striking the appropriate balance between due process and national security.

The FBI's profile includes a US-based supporter of the militant islamists. Attorney General Ashcroft once explained that an "either-or" approach is not useful.

The media has tended to overlook the fact that when the FBI uses the word "domestic" the word includes a US-based, highly-educated supporter of the militant islamists.

[snipped]

It is possible that the anthrax used is highly distinctive (pinpointing a single lab) and the authorities just don't have that sample collected. It is notable that it was a mixture, because standard protocol in microbiology would have avoided that. It may have demonstrated very sloppy practice. The probativeness of the inversion of the plasmid is uncertain without more information made public.

In March 2005, at a bioterrorism conference, French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin had claimed that al-Qaeda affiliates have produced biological and chemical weapons in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, which borders on Chechnya. The militants there had a connection and contact with Arab Chechen fighter Ibn Khattab. De Villepin told members of a bioterrorism conference in Lyons, France, that after the invasion of Afghanistan, al-Qaeda cells moved to the Pankisi Gorge in order to continue their efforts. Judging from Michael Scheuer's comments, however, those efforts in the Pankisi Gorge appear to have predated 9/11. Russia claimed that the Pankisi Gorge in the former Soviet republic of Georgia was a have Chechen militants and international terrorists. For his part, Bin Laden's confidante Ibn Khattab, who was killed by a poison letter in 2002, once said that wounded fighters and some international aid organizations were located there.

Chechnya lies 40 miles to the North. The Georgians say a six-man team of chemists was brewing poisons to be used on Westerners in Central Asia. Until late 2001, the Arab fighters were protected by high-ranking and corrupt officials and operated with impunity in the dense forests. The FSB has identified Islamic charities operating in Chechnya and elsewhere in the region. to include Al-Haramain and Benevolence International Foundation historically associated with Al Qaeda's aspiration to develop anthrax for use against US targets. The Benevolence International Foundation, a Chicago-based charity, provided financial support to the Chechen Islamists. According to a U.S. government affidavit filed in a Chicago court:

In September 2005, more than 60 deadly bacterial strains that were the legacy of the former Soviet Union's biological weapons program were brought to the US from Baku, Azerbaijan as part of a joint program to combat bioterrorism. Copies of the strain were shipped aboard a U.S. military plane -- on one of those not-so-secret secret missions announced the same week by the Associated Press. Arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware by Saturday, officials, analysis of the strains at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology began immediately. The shipment was pursuant to an agreement in June under which the US provided money for its security of the pathogens to prevent theft by bioterrorists. AP reported: "In exchange for the aid, Azerbaijan agreed to share copies of its strains with the United States, which could prove helpful in the event of future anthrax attacks similar to the mail contamination nearly four years ago in Washington and New York. Those cases remain unsolved." Russia, in contrast, AP reported, "has declined to share its biological strains and has urged former Soviet republics not to share their pathogens." Baku, Azerbaijan, dating back to at least 1998, was ground zero for the launch of Zawahiri's plan to weaponize anthrax for use against US targets. The Pankisi Gorge in Georgia was where Al Qaeda had scientists doing biological poisons.

The strains from Azerbaijan, along with an agreement reached the previous year with nearby Georgia, allowed U.S. scientists to learn more about the strains held in Soviet-era biological weapons program. Former Russian bioweaponeer Ken Alibek has always said that Russia had Ames. Moreover, a former KGB spy master says that the Russians had a spy at Ft. Detrick who provided samples of all specimens by diplomatic pouch.

The strains were shipped in what looked like a large camping cooler -- and it took a waiver by authorities to avoid going through the X-ray. An Army captain from the Walter Reed Institute of Research was waiting to bring the strains back to the United States. Jennifer Brewer, the U.S. cooperative threat manager for biological weapon programs in Azerbaijan, praised the cooperation of the Azerbaijan government. After the analysis by AFIP, the announcements by the FBI relating to Amerithrax began pointing to the fact that the Ames strain was more widely distributed than previously believed. In late October 2006, the Washington Post reported: "But the more the FBI investigated, the more ubiquitous the Ames strain seemed, appearing in labs around the world including nations of the former Soviet Union."

While Zawahiri's access to the Ames strain is still yet to be proved or disclosed, but there was no shortage of possibilities.

Regardless of where the Ames strain was obtained, in terms of where the anthrax was grown and processed, it has been reportedly determined that the anthrax was grown in the Northeastern United States -- apparently researchers have been able to establish that anthrax grown in water in the Northeastern United States is distinguishable from anthrax grown in water from the Southeast and Pacific Northwest.

The FBI scientists also are seeking to distinguish between water isotopes ratios in the anthrax. In one published anthrax study, researchers grew Bacillus subtilis, a harmless bacteria that resembles Bacillus anthracis, using local water from five different U.S. cities. The scientists were able to distinguish those grown in various cities. The method can be used to narrow the number of possible origins of the water based on the number of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes. Similarly, a press release announced in September 2003 that University of Maryland researchers have developed a technique to help the FBI track the origins of deadly anthrax spores by identifying the medium used to grow it. The FBI asked Maryland professor Catherine Fenselau to turn her mass spectrometry lab to the forensic task of sleuthing how bacillus spores, such as anthrax, are prepared.

Brian Williams reports that investigators have told NBC that the water used to make the spores came from the Northeastern United States. As defined by the Census Bureau, the Northeast region of the United States covers nine states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. A scientist explained the research in an NPR interview in 2004:

Will rare forms of hydrogen and oxygen lead to a killer? Levels of such isotopes vary widely by geographic location. Spores reflect isotope ratios used in their growth culture. While it won't pinpoint where the anthrax was grown, it may rule some places out. "Anthrax source can be traced using water analysis," U.S. Water News Online, April 2003

A scientific journal article on isotope ratios of bottled water worldwide. The reading for a Greenwich CT sample (northeastern U.S.) is -6.6 delta O(18). The readings for two samples from Wales are -6.5 and -6.7, one for Islamabad is -6.8, and one for Baghdad is -6.6. The yellow strip includes much of the Northeastern United States -- and also Ann Arbor and Minneapolis -- but if that is the isotope ratio range, however, Islamabad and Baghdad can be excluded.

Conclusion

Dr. Zawahiri appears to have accomplished the attack on the US "structure" he intended. With the planes, Al Qaeda struck the US trade dominance (World Trade Center) and its military might (Pentagon). With the anthrax, some US-based supporter(s) of the goals of Zawahiri appear to have rounded out the field that they imagine provides support to Israel -- the legislative branch and media. Analogous letter bombs were sent in connection with the earlier attack on the World Trade Center and the imprisonment of the Blind Sheikh and militant islamists responsible for that attack and a related plot. Thus, relying on the postal service to send its deadly missives in connection with an earlier attack of the World Trade Center is not only Al Qaeda's modus operandi, it is its signature.

Everyone approaches a problem from their world view and what they know. A hammer tends to find a nail. Biological weapons control activists see a US biodefense insider. Anti-semites see Zionist perpetrators. US-haters see a CIA conspiracy. The CIA's Zawahiri Task Force sees a US-based supporter of the militant islamists (at least they do if they are smart). Israeli intelligence and the Iraqi National Congress lobbied for Iraq as the culprit. Liberal Beltway insiders see right-wing wackos. FBI investigators would seem to be covering all the possible leads, leaving no stone unturned.Journalists kowtow to the views of any government source in the investigation they deem reliable. Sometimes if a spokesman for Al Qaeda claims it has green-lighted highly-educated US-based supporters of the militant islamists who have access to United States government and intelligence information relating to biological weapons -- supporters who are "above suspicion" -- then the spokesman may be telling the truth. Sometimes if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

Information relating to the resolution of the Amerithrax matter likely will come from the numerous individuals, now arrested, who may have played a role or known something. It likely will stem from those with a personal knowledge of Al Qaeda, and not those with an ideological or political axe to grind, whether against Iraq or the US biodefense establishment. The perp may at some point have expressed upset at the detention of the Blind Sheik or been personally affected by the detention of friends or family.

Although the analysis by the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Rockville, Md. did not pinpoint the exact origin of the Florida isolate, the study showed how whole-genome sequencing technology and computational methods can be a powerful approach for analyzing anthrax and other bacterial outbreaks. Similarly, while the anthrax perpetrator(s) may never be caught, the Amerithrax investigation was hard fought by investigators who realized that the next 9/11 might be at issue. As they heard Ayman Zawahiri's recurring threats of attack, the Amerithrax investigators likely remained haunted by coincidences that they tirelessly pursued while they left no stone unturned. Amerithrax investigators emphasize that there is no cover-up -- no conspiracy. The investigators are under intense pressure to solve the case. The information being withheld is for reasons of national security and safeguarding the integrity of the confidential criminal investigation.

Question:

More than three years have passed since the putative meeting in Prague between hijacker Mohammed Atta and Iraq Consul al-Ani. What has the CIA, FBI, Czech intelligence (BIS) and other intelligence services established about the activities of the alleged participants at this meeting?

Answer:

1) Ahmad Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani served as consul at Iraq's embassy in Prague between March 1999 and April 21, 2001 and he was activity involved in agent-handling during this period.

2) Mohammed Atta applied for a visa to visit the Czech Republic on May 26, 2000 in Bonn, Germany. According to Czech visa records, Atta identified himself as being a "Hamburg student." Since a visa was not necessary to catch a Czech plane to the US, Czech intelligence concluded he had business in the Czech Republic.

3) Just prior to leaving for the U.S., Atta made 2 trips to the Czech Republic in 2000. The first was on May 30, where he went without a visa to the transit lounge of Prague International Airport; the second was by bus to Prague on June 2 with visa BONN200005260024.

4) On April 4, 2001, Atta checked out of the Diplomat Inn in Virginia Beach and cashed a check for $8,000 from a SunTrust account, according to the FBI. Atta was not seen again in America by any witness before April 11, 2001.

5) Al-Ani scheduled a meeting in April with a "Hamburg student" according to an appointment calendar subsequently turned up by Czech intelligence in a surreptitious search of the Iraq Embassy (presumably after the defeat of Iraq in April 2003.)

6) Al-Ani was observed meeting a young Arab-speaking man on the outskirts of Prague at about 11 am on April 9th by a watcher for Czech counterintelligence.

7) Al-Ani was expelled from Prague less than 2 weeks after that meeting.

8) After seeing Atta’s picture on September 11th, the Czech watcher identified the Arab-speaking man meeting al-Ani as Mohammed Atta.

9 ) Al-Ani denied that he met Atta , as did the Baghdad government. Al-Ani repeated that denial after he was detained by U.S. forces in July 2003.

10 ) According to George Tenet testimony before a Joint Committee of Congress (June 18, 2002): “Atta allegedly traveled outside the US in early April 2001 to meet with an Iraqi intelligence officer in Prague, we are still working to confirm or deny this allegation. It is possible that Atta traveled under an unknown alias since we have been unable to establish that Atta left the US or entered Europe in April 2001 under his true name or any known aliases.”

11) Subsequently, Spanish intelligence found evidence that Algerians Khaled Madani and Moussa Laouar provided false passports to Mohamed Atta and his associate Ramzi bin al-Shibh.

SA pair ready to speak out over terror claims

January 24 2007 at 12:05AM

The two South Africans accused of having links to Osama bin Laden's
al-Qaeda network will release a statement on Wednesday, their lawyer
said on Tuesday night.

This follows an evening meeting between the two and lawyer Shaheed
Dollie.

"We want to do this instead of causing a media frenzy," said Dollie.

Junaid Dockrat, a dentist from Mayfair, Johannesburg, and his cousin,
Farhad Ahmed Dockrat, have been named by the United States
government as terror suspects with links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda
and the deposed Taliban in Afghanistan.

"They are not on the list at the moment... the request to include them
(by the US government to the UN Security Council) was only made on
January 18," said Dollie.

On Tuesday evening, Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was
still "applying her mind on how to deal with the issue" of the two.

Dollie said he asked foreign affairs to clarify reports of plans to
name
them on the United Nations' list of suspected terrorists.

In an urgent letter to the department of foreign affairs, he said his
clients were "confident that there is no factual basis whatsoever,
which
would justify their being listed on the so-called
'United Nations list of persons associated with al-Qaeda'".

However, as far as foreign affairs is concerned, no official
correspondence has been forthcoming.

"The office of the minister has not received any official communique
from the lawyers of the two South Africans listed by the UN Security
Council for alleged links to al-Qaeda," foreign affairs
spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said on Tuesday.

Under UN guidelines, they face the freezing of their assets and bank
accounts, and prohibitions on worldwide trade and travel.

Dollie added that media hype and negative publicity surrounding the two
men had affected their personal lives, traumatised their children and
negatively impacted on their businesses.

He also confirmed reports that both Junaid, Farhad and their businesses
had been under surveillance.

"They've been under surveillance for quite a while now," he said,
adding
that they were not sure who was monitoring them.

According to a legal expert, South Africa - as a member of the UN -
will
have no choice but to act against the pair.

South Africa had to comply with the UN's guidelines, said University of
the Witwatersrand law school senior lecturer Mia Swart.

"It is difficult to apply the construct of diplomatic protection to
these men... South Africa has to comply with United Nations guidelines
as a member state," she said.

The SABC reported that South Africa has until Friday to give the US
government reasons why the two should not be on the Security Council's
list. - Sapa

Man held in L.A. subway mercury spill

The Associated Press
(Published January 24‚ 2007)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The FBI on Tuesday questioned a man suspected of
spilling mercury on a subway platform last month and said he did not
appear to be involved in terrorist activity.
Armando Bustamante Miranda, 27, was arrested and held for a parole
violation unrelated to the spill, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller
said. She declined to elaborate.

"We're not going to have anything more until we sort this thing
out," Eimiller said.

A videotape showed a man crouching and dropping something onto a
platform at a subway station on Dec. 22. He used a Metropolitan
Transit Authority call box to report the spill, then boarded a train.

The county is investigating to determine why transit officials
waited eight hours to alert authorities after they were told about
the spilled toxic substance.

No injuries were reported, and officials believe the small amount of
mercury would have been harmful only if someone touched it or drank
it.

Surprise!: Dearbornistan Muslim Caught with $1/4 Mill in Fake Nikes

http://www.debbieschlussel.com/
By Debbie Schlussel

When I first heard news reports in the Detroit media that an area
man was caught with $240,000 worth of counterfeit Nikes, I figured
the man must be a Muslim and wondered whether the media would
mention his name.

It's well known that counterfeit items--especially counterfeit
cigarettes, rolling papers, and apparel--fund terrorism. In the
Detroit area, the counterfeit items--including designer perfumes,
viagra, and batteries--have been traced to Hezbollah funding
schemes. But they also are linked to funds for HAMAS and Al-Qaeda.

Well, once again, my instincts proved correct--on both counts. The
man, Ibrahim Abdul Aoun, was not only Muslim, but his Muslim name
was never mentioned in the print edition of The Detroit Newsistan
(gee, whatta surprise!)--listed only as "a Dearborn man."

And beside the quarter mill in fake Nikes, what authorities also
found on Aoun was interesting:

* Stolen IDs

* Illegal Firearms

Gee, I'm sure he was just your average run-of-the-mill
counterfeiter, right? Just wondering how much of the money
went "back home" to our friends in Hezbollah.

Given that one of the top Assistant Wayne County Prosecutors, Abed
Hammoud, is an open supporter of Hezbollah, it's amazing this case
got far in Wayne County.

More:

DETROIT -- A 33-year-old Dearborn resident was charged with six
felonies today after police found him with between 3,000 and 4,000
bogus athletic shoes earlier this week.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Ibrahim Abdul Aoun
with counterfeiting property, four counts of identity theft and
felony firearm in connection with the shoes, which Nike fraud
investigators valued at $240,000. The cache of shoes was found on
Wednesday in a raid in the 19000 block of West Seven Mile Road.

"Numerous tips about the counterfeit Nike shoes came from everyday
citizens," Worthy said. "They should be commended for reporting the
illegal activity that ultimately led police to make an arrest in
this case."

The charge of counterfeiting property carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison. Identity theft is punishable by five years and
or a $25,000 fine. Conviction on felony firearm carries a mandatory
two-year sentence.

BTW, even though Muslims frequently counterfeit Nike products for
terrorism financing, that hasn't stopped Nike from providing free
Nike T-shirts to CAIR. It's a practice that began long ago when the
group whined that a Nike design on a shoe looked like the Arabic
for "Allah." It's been free Ts to CAIR from the Beaverton, Oregon
shoe and apparel giant, ever since.
