VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.
From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for medical reasons. The clue to detecting the fake dissident is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal dissident was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.
One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.
MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.
Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.
Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.
Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's reformed revolutionary. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the imam on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.
He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following hunger strikes, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

MUST READ: ISLAMIC ECONOMICS & SHARIAH LAW: A PLAN FOR WORLD DOMINATION
Islamic Economics and Shariah Law: A Plan for World Domination
David J. Jonsson
My goal today is to put you into the mind of an Islamist to think like an Islamist. It is only possible to understand the events occurring by understanding their thinking and what it would mean to live under Shariah law. There is a well-worn Cliché Its the economy stupid that appears around election times. So it is with Islamic Economics and the Clash of Ideologies we are witnessing today. See also: Islamic Economics and the Final Jihad: The Muslim Brotherhood to the Leftist/Marxist - Islamist Alliance.
It should be realized that the goal of the Islamists, following in the footsteps of Muhammad, is not so much to conquer the land but to Islmanize the populations. In so doing they seek to have the lands come under Shariah law and that the lands become dar al-Islamthe land of Islam and that all non-Muslims accept the status of Dhimmissubservient to Muslim rule. The Plan involves the incremental acceptance of basic tenants of Shariah law as applied to all aspects of lifethe Islamic Way of Life. This implies the desire to incrementally change the laws and ultimately the Constitution of the U.S. This requires the population to accept the new laws as equally valid and acceptable. Initially this will result in parallel legal systems and progressing from there with laws that may be applied locally and ultimately nationally. Jihad can be with the pen and the tongue, just as it can be the sword and the spear as Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood has said. Knowledge combined with economic control can be wielded with the precision of a sharp sword to effect any desired social/political change necessary for the fulfillment of Islams goal.

Russia: Prosecutor's Office Appeals to Saudi Arabia to Help Determine Identities of Beslan Terrorists
The office of the Russian Prosecutor General (RPG) has extended the time limit on its investigation of the Beslan School massacre, and it has appealed to law-enforcement agencies in Saudi Arabia to help determine the identities of possible terrorists responsible, reports Fontanka.ru, a Russian web newspaper. The report, however, didn't provide any more details.
The Saudi government has not yet replied to the RPG's request.
While the RPG didn't explain the precise reason for its appeal to Saudi authorities, it may be due to recent claims that up to 60 devout Muslim terrorists were involved in the Beslan massacre that brutally took the lives of 344 people, 186 of whom were children.
Currently, official reports by Russian authorities claim there were only 32 Islamic terrorists. Only one, Nur-Pashi Kulayev, was taken alive. In May he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In the days after the attack Russian media reported that the attackers were part of an international group led by the devout Chechen Muslim terrorist Shamil Basayev, and which included several `Arabs' tied to Al-Qaeda. It is believed that among the foreigners were three Algerian-born U.K citizens who attended the Finnsbury Park Mosque: Osman Larussi, Yacine Benalia and Kamel Rabat Bouralha.
Russia's secret police, the FSB, claims that these three were in contact with Al-Qaeda operatives in Saudi Arabia. Bouralha was detained several weeks after Beslan with a bullet wound in his chest as he tried to flee Chechnya into Azerbaijan. During interrogation he said that Larussi and Benalia were also among the terrorists. Benalia was reported killed during the siege. Larussi was reported killed by Russian special forces in March 2004.
The FSB also claims that Al-Qaeda financed the Beslan massacre through Saudi citizen, Abu Omar Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Saif. He was active in the North Caucasus from 1996 until he was killed by Russian special forces in Chechnya in November 2005. He provided Islamic militant groups in the North Caucasus with funds, some of which were channeled through the Al-Haramein Islamic Foundation, an USA-based terror group.
The RPG's efforts will most likely be in vain. Saudi Arabia is the centre of the Islamic cult, and indeed many powerful figures in the kingdom actively support global jihad.

UK: Bakri States Muslims Should Not Join Police Or Army
Omar Bakri Mohammed founded British Hizb ut-Tahrir shortly after he arrived in Britain as an "asylum-seeker" in 1985. He left Hizb ut-Tahrir (or was expelled) and founded Al-Muhajiroun (the "migrants") in 1996. This group has encouraged acts of terrorism, and possibly sent Asif Hanif and Omar Sharif to Israel, where they were involved in the suicide bombing of Mike's Bar in Tel Aviv, killing three and injuring 60 on April 30, 2003.
Bakri disbanded Al-Muhajiroun in October 2004, and its members set up new groups - the Saviour or Saved Sect, and Al Ghurabaa (the "strangers"), with Bakri as their "emir" or "spiritual leader". In August 2005, after he had fled to Lebanon, Bakri was barred from returning to Britain. In July last year, when Lebanon was bombed, he tried to seek sanctuary with British refugees, claiming
In today's Sunday Telegraph, Bakri is quoted as saying that "moderate Muslims" in the police or army will eventually revolt against the system and "crush it from from within".
"When you start to ask Muslims to join your Army and your police you are making a grave mistake. That British Muslim who joins the police today will one day read the Koran and will have an awakening," he said.
"Those moderates are one day going to be practising Muslims. Now what happens if they are British police or in the Army and they have weapons? How much information do they have about you that they will use to serve the global struggle?"
"They will revolt against the system if they have been failed by your foreign policy which is oppressive against Islam, or have been contacted by people who believe Britain is a domain of war."
While sipping strawberry juice in a Beirut cafe, Bakri also praised the 7/7 bombings of 2005, saying they had benefitted Muslims: "I believe it is a better place for Islam and Muslims⦠but not for non-Muslims. What's happening around the world is good and positive for Islam."
He also confirmed the stories that he had officiated at the marriage of a Muslim policeman, PC Amjad Farooq. This policeman caused controversy last year when he refused to perform any of his duties in the Diplomatic Protection Group (DPG or SO16) protecting the Israeli Embassy in London.
Bakri said: "If I'd have known [he was a policeman at the time of the wedding] I would never have married them. My advice to all Muslims in the police is to leave their jobs."
Muslims in British police forces have in some cases, such as Tariq Ghaffur, risen to higher ranks. But others, such as the woman police officer described in the Sunday Mail have caused embarrassment.
The unnamed woman refused to shake hands with Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Ian Blair at a passing out parade at Imber Court. The grounds given were that, as a Muslim woman, she is prevented from touching a man who is not a relative or spouse.
The passing out parade was the culmination of 18 weeks' training and featured 200 recruits. A source said: "Before Sir Ian arrived she told her training supervisor that she was not going to shake his hand because it was against her religion. She also said she did not want her picture taken with the commissioner because they would only use it for propaganda."
"Sir Ian was informed on his arrival of the officer's request. This has never happened before and he was bloody furious. But he agreed to go along with it so as not to cause a scene. He went out and shook the hand of every single new recruit apart from her. It was very obvious and very embarrassing."
The source said that the incident caused heated conversation afterwards, with officers wondering how she would deal with arresting men, if she was not allowed to touch them.
Since 2001, Scotland Yard has allowed Muslim women police officers to wear an adaptation of the hijab or Muslim headscarf.

Civil defence armed to fight any disaster
By Joy Sengupta
22 January 2007
DUBAI --- The Dubai Civil Defence Department is taking several measures
to
prevent any kind of mishap caused by chemical and hazardous materials,
officials have said.
On the sidelines of the Intersec Middle East 2007, Civil Defence
officials told Khaleej Times that the new Hazard Material Protection
Unit, which would start its operations very soon, would be capable of
dealing with any kind of accidents caused by hazardous materials,
radiation, gas leak, etc.
The department will also introduce 'Commander', a mini vehicle to fight
fire and other kinds of accidents, they said.
Mohammed Abdul Rehman, Director of the Hazard Material Branch of the
Dubai Civil Defence, said the vehicle had been equipped with modern
technologies to fight chemical disasters.
"We always wanted to introduce a system to fight chemical and radiation
mishaps. Dubai is growing industrially and accidents can happen any
time. This vehicle will be the latest in the Middle East and it will
have everything in it for the job. It took us eight months to design
this vehicle and it will be operational very soon," he said.
The vehicle will have instruments that can identify the chemical
responsible for a mishap.
"This has made the work easier. Normally, it takes some time to first
identify the cause in case of a chemical mishap. In several cases, the
department does not get much information about the nature of a massive
leakage. This is bound to consume time. This vehicle will have the
equipment that can identify the chemical immediately. This will help us
to take swift action," he added.
The vehicle will have space for four people including the driver. "In
addition to this, the vehicle will have alarm devices, cameras for
communication, the latest tools for fighting gas and chemical leaks,
the
best protective suits, instruments to analyse radioactivity, etc," said
the official.

Militants hijack ship, take 24 foreigners hostage
EMMA AMAIZE Warri
Posted to the Web: Sunday, January 21, 2007
THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND yesterday, hijacked a cargo ship and took about 24 foreign nationals on board hostage at the Chanomi Creeks in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The militant group gave the Federal Government 72-hour ultimatum to meet its demands or all the hostages would be eliminated and the ship destroyed. Delta State government, last night, confirmed the hijack, saying the general cargo ship belonging to a firm identified as Bacoliner was stopped and seized at Okerenkoko, yesterday morning.
The state government, however, said the hostages included six crew members of the ship. It said Governor James Ibori was already intervening in the matter. The Philippinos, we understand, are okay, the governor's spokesman, Mr. Sheddy Ozoene, told Sunday Vanguard.
An official of MEND who confirmed that the organization was responsible for the kidnap to Sunday Vanguard in an interview on phone said the hostages were in safe condition, as at 7.30 pm but their identities were not confirmed. The group is demanding the immediate release of the former governor of Bayelsa state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and the leader of the Niger-Delta Delta Peoples Volunteer Front, Alhaji M. Asari-Dokubo, who is standing trial for treasonable offeces.
It maintained that the reasons given so far by the Federal Government for their continued detention do not hold water and warned that except they were released, MEND would continue with its liberation struggle. If they think that we do not mean it, let them not listen to us, we will bomb and destroy the Chevron Oil Tank Farm in Escravos." 'Another reason for the action, he said, is that MEND is disenchanted with the fraudulent diversion of the 13 per cent derivation funds by the governments of Rivers and Bayelsa states and we want them to account for the money collected on behalf of the people of the two states in particular.
He said the group also wants the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to pay the Ijaws and the entire people of the Niger-Delta would not sit and watch the governments misappropriate money belonging to the people. Besides, the organization said it was unhappy with the manner the Ijaws of Warri were being treated by the state government, warning that if the issue of resettling the Ijaws of Warri were not tackled before the general elections, this year, there will be trouble in Delta state.
MEND is also asking for the payment of $1.5 billion to the Ijaw aborigenes of Bayelsa state by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, saying that since the court ordered the oil company to pay the money, it had been foot-dragging. Our forces are ready for them, let them venture into the creeks and meet us, he added. Also, it is demanding for the payment of N1.5 billion each for the nine Ijaw freedom fighters that were killed, last year, while on a mission to rescued a kidnapped official of the SPDC, the late Mr. Nelson Ujeya, who, himself, was killed in a fierce combat with soldiers.
Efforts, yesterday, to contact the Commander of the Joint Task Force in the Niger-Delta, Brigadier General Alfred Ilogho for comments proved abortive, as he was out of reach on his cell phone.

Left to their fate: Police men injured by robbers abandoned in hospitals, send SOS to Obasanjo, Ehindero
By Fred Iwenjora
Posted to the Web: Saturday, January 06, 2007
In recent times, armed robbery has become a very sophisticated crime in Nigeria as bandits employ all types of mannerisms, armaments and tactics to achieve their objective while more devilish ones sporadically shoot into the air, killing and maiming and leaving behind their regular trade mark of sorrow, tears and blood. From Port Harcourt to Sokoto, Lagos to Maiduguri, the story is same.
Recent statistics have shown that over 100 deaths were recorded in the last quarter of the year just ended resulting from armed robbery attacks in the Lagos metropolis as Christmas and the Moslem feast of Eid-el-Kabir approached. In the same vein, about 67 police men died as a result of encounter with the robbers during the last three months.
At a point, it seemed as if killing policemen was the pay-off line of the bandits as they unleashed terror on the hapless populace. Every day, the story in the dailies runs the same , Robbers kill policemen. One of the most recent being the case at an Abule Egba based bank where the robbers stormed and killed four police men on duty. One of the robbers who was said to be a police informant was said to have confessed to having attended one of the mans funeral after snuffing life out of him.
At no time has there been the kind of stories about robbers slaying police men than this period in the year. One of the cases the incident at Egbe, near Ikotun in Alimosho LGA of Lagos where ten police men on routine patrol ran into an ambush set by hoodlums who were ransacking a bank along Isolo Road, Egbe, raining a volley of bullets on the unsuspecting patrolmen, killing six of them. Four survived to tell the story but they are now seemingly forgotten at the Military Hospital, Yaba where they are receiving treatment from the wounds they sustained while every one is celebrating Christmas and the new year.
The four men, Patrick Obikoru, Adewale Adeoye, Corporal Akinlolu and another constable, simply called Yemi are clinging on hope that theyll survive their ordeal inflicted by the underworld men.
When Saturday Vanguard visited the Military Hospital, Yaba where three of the four policemen were on admission, Patrick who was shot on the leg severally was just lying forlornly on the bed, his Holy Bible by his side as he recounted the woes they have been made to endure since that fateful day.
My brother, no be small thing o. We were on our regular rounds of patrol through Ikotun, Idimu and other neighbouring communities. When we got to Egbe Road, what we heard was sporadic gunfire and the volley of bullets raining towards our vehicle. In the swiftness of a flash, six of our colleagues were all dead in the pools of their own blood. In the end, four of us got lucky and escaped with different kinds of injuries. It was an ambush. I tell you if we had known that the robbers were at work, we would have been better prepared to deal with the situation. I would live to remember that night all the rest of my life because I thought I was already dead as the wound on my leg was bleeding profusely. How else do I thank God for keeping me alive till today. My heart goes out to our fallen colleagues who lost their lives in active duty. Then we started the survival game.
We were first taken to Subol Hospital where we were rejected outright. The authorities said they were incompetent to handle our case. Then we were moved to Ikeja where they said they didnt have surgical instruments. From Ikeja, we headed straight to Mushin where the hospital also turned us down. It was the intention of those taking us to start treatment immediately but this time, it was daybreak and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi became the next port of call. At Igbobi, they had only one bed for us, so one of us, Corporal Akinlolu was admitted. This effort to commence treatment caused Akinlolus father to make a frantic call to one of his friends who is close to the authorities at the Military Hospital, Yaba who promptly arranged for us to be admitted and treatment commenced.
What is painful about this issue is that we all seem to have been abandoned to our own fate. We are the ones bearing the brunt of treatment, drugs, X-rays and general upkeep. You could imagine how difficult it is for us to survive especially at this ember months when every thing is hiked to high heavens.
Our DPO visited us on that day and promised to take the message to the Area Commander at Ogba, Ikeja. My brother do you know that we havent seen anything ever since?
The accountant of the bank as well as the bank manager have only visited but no show since. I feel so pained that even the police we serve and the bank we were trying to protect have not felt that we deserve to live. At the initial time when we were brought here, I had employed someone to help me out and I was paying that person until my brother left his academics to come and assist me. I want to plead with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr, Sunday Ehindero not to forget that we are his boys and we are in real distress and deserve to live. I joined the Police because I wanted to be part of those who rid the streets of crime and criminals, but now I dont know how I feel about this job. Just imagine that we lost our lives in this attack just as our colleagues? It would have been saraaa . However, I love to give God the entire glory for sparing my life.
Adewale Adeoyes case seems to be the more pathetic as his injuries sustained seems a bit more serious than the others. He is immobilised on his bed with braces on his waist. His bed spread was drenched in his blood and he was continuously writhing in pain. It was very difficult to get him to talk as he was undergoing treatment. However, he was able to mutter a few words.
It is a real pity that those who serve the nation get nothing in return for their labours. Every day you hear stories about people who say they called the police in times of distress and no one responded. Is this what you get? You wont imagine that no one has come to assist except family members, friends and well wishers. As at today, my bill has risen to over N140,000. I have children in both primary and secondary school and my wife is here taking care of me. In the next few days, I would be in for another round of surgeries. So you now can imagine the extent of my misery. I am only very grateful to the nurses and doctors here at the military hospital who accepted to take us when others were saying no.
They have been so kind. My only wish is that President Obasanjo helps us out of this mess. We are dying by instalments and no one seems to care. We seem to have been abandoned to our fate even while we were on active duty in service of our dear nation . The president should use this as a point of contact to look into the cases of others in the same situation like us. Since this incident, I have been lying down like this without movement and it is not easy. Considering the amount of blood I have lost, it is only the Almighty God that has kept me alive.

MEND threatens to kill hostages
By Emma Amaize
Posted to the Web: Monday, January 22, 2007
WARRI MOVEMENT for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which hijacked a cargo ship, weekend, in Warri and took 24 Phillipines hostage, reiterated, yesterday, that the kidnapped foreign nationals would be killed tomorrow if at the expiration of its 72 hour ultimatum to the Federal Government, its demands were not met.
An official of the group who re affirmed that we have 24 Phillipines in our custody said that it was not true that the Delta State Government had made contact with the people that kidnapped the hostages.
As I speak to you now, the state government has not contacted us. If they did, I would have known. So, nobody should say that they have reached us, they have not and what we are saying is that the former governor of Bayelsa State, Cheif Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Front, Alhaji M. Asari Dokubo should be released,. he said.
He pointed out that the consignment in the cargo had not been released to anybody and that all the 24 Phillipines were being taken care off well, adding, I want to correct the impression we got from your Sunday Vanguard report of our action that we are asking Bayelsa State government to give account of the 13 per cent derivation fund, we did not accuse Bayelsa government of embezzling the funds, it is the Delta and Rivers governments we said should give account of the 13 per cent derivation fund the govenors collected.
Asked if they ate well on Saturday when they kidnapped them, he said: They ate, we gave them food and they have to wait for government to answer our demands or we will sacrifice their lives to Ijaw gods.

Dagestani Feared Dead
Jan.22, 2007
MAKHACHKALA -- (AP) A Dagestani official and election candidate has
gone missing and is feared dead, authorities said Saturday.
Magomed Omarmagomedov, 45, an emergency situations official in
northern Dagestan and a candidate in March elections to the regional
parliament, has been missing for several days, regional Interior
Ministry spokeswoman Anzhela Martirosova said.
She said Omarmagomedov's car -- damaged after an apparent explosion
and fire -- was found in a local forest Thursday, and that he is
feared dead.
Omarmagomedov escaped an apparent assassination attempt two years ago.
The liberal Union of Right Forces party, on whose ballot Omarmagomedov
was running, said the disappearance showed that "a real war" was being
waged against it in the region and called for a vigorous investigation.

Venezuela to back Syria, Iran against US
CARACAS, Jan 21: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez vowed on Sunday that
his government would always back US foes Syria and Iran in the face of
threats from Washington.
The United States "is an empire of madmen," Chavez, who has accused
Washington of wanting to topple him, said in his weekly radio
television
show "Hello President." "They threaten Syria. We will always be with
Syria and Iran," he told Syrian Information Minister Mohsen Bilal, who
was a guest in the broadcast.
"They want to remove our brother (Syrian President) Bashar al-Assad."
Chavez visited Syria and Iran last year and expects a visit from Assad
sometime this year. He met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
in
Caracas a week ago.
The Venezuelan leader has backed Iran in its standoff with the West
over
its disputed nuclear programme.---AFP
