VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.
From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for medical reasons. The clue to detecting the fake dissident is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal dissident was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.
One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.
MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.
Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.
Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.
Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's reformed revolutionary. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the imam on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.
He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following hunger strikes, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

Taliban Leader Says He hadnt Seen Bin Laden for Years
zaman.com
Taliban leader Mullah Omar said he had not seen al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden since late 2001, when the United States ousted the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
Replying to Reuters journalists via e-mail, Omar said he had neither seen bin Laden nor attempted a meeting, adding that he prayed for his well-being and security.
Furthermore, Omar opposed a statement by Taliban spokesman that they would participate in tribal councils called loya jirgas if desired, calling such participation impossible. Mullah Omar also renewed his call on foreign forces to withdraw, to help end clashes in Afghanistan.
The last video footage showing bin Laden was released in 2004. Suspected to be hiding in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, some claimed bin Laden died from typhoid fever in August

Mullah Omar says hasnt seen bin Laden for years
Although several governments and intelligence agencies rebutted that report, saying they had no evidence to suggest bin Laden had died, they acknowledged they had no clue to where he was.
The wealthy Saudi-born bin Laden helped bankroll the Taliban after moving to Afghanistan in the mid-1990s, and he was reported to have married one of Omars daughters to cement their alliance.
The United States has offered a $25mn reward for the capture of bin Laden and $10mn for Omar.
The best guess to bin Ladens whereabouts remains somewhere on the rugged border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, in the ethnic tribal lands where Omars Taliban counts on support to fight an insurgency against US and Nato forces in Afghanistan and the government of President Hamid Karzai.
Analysts say that while there was no apparent evidence for any meeting between bin Laden and Omar after the September 11 attacks, the two fugitive militants are believed to have remained in contact in recent years.
"According to my information and the interviews which I conducted in the last two years in different provinces of the eastern and southern Afghanistan, Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden are in touch, at least (for the) last two years," said Hamid Mir, a prominent Pakistani journalist who interviewed bin Laden shortly after the September 11 attacks.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, both major US allies in the war on terrorism, have deteriorated sharply over the past year in the wake of the bloodiest campaign mounted by the Taliban since it was ousted from power.
Omar said people from the Pashtun tribal belt straddling the border were rallying to the Talibans cause. "The people themselves have risen up to fight the Americans," he said.
Although the Taliban and Al Qaeda are seen as allies, Omar said his sole focus was Afghanistan while bin Ladens movement was engaged in a global jihad.
"They have set jihad as their goal, whereas we have set the expulsion of American troops from Afghanistan as our target," he said.
To start a political process to end the militancy, Pakistan and Afghanistan plan to organise tribal councils known as jirgas on both sides of the border. No dates have been fixed.
A Taliban spokesman said last month that the group might join the jirgas if asked, but Omar rejected the proposal.
"The only people who would participate are those who have sold out to foreign powers. Our participation is absolutely out of the question," the fugitive militant leader said.
He reiterated his call for the withdrawal of foreign troops to end the conflict in Afghanistan. "Unless that happens, the war will heat further up," Omar said.
Afghanistan says Omar is based in or around the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, but Omar said he is in Afghanistan. Reuters

Planes miss by 50 feet at Denver airport
DENVER A close call for two planes at Denver's airport today.
Officials say a Frontier Airlines jet was about to land when the pilot saw a small charter plane on the runway. The Frontier plane was able to abort the landing in time, missing the little plane by 50 feet.
No one was hurt, and the pilot turned around and later touched down safely.
Federal investigators are looking into what the Key Lime Air plane was doing on the runway. While it was snowing and misty, authorities don't know if weather is a factor.
The Frontier flight was coming in from St. Louis. Neither airline will say how many people were aboard their planes at the time.

Two New York men save falling toddler
NEW YORK Two New Yorkers are being credited with saving the life of a toddler they spotted dangling from a fire escape four stories up.
Police say the three-year-old had crawled out of a window when his baby sitter wasn't looking. One witness said the boy "was hanging on for dear life." The men were passing by the Bronx apartment building just as the child's grip began to weaken.
They rushed to get underneath the tumbling tot. The boy fell hard enough to knock one man off balance, then bounced into the arms of the second man.
The child emerged with only a cut on his forehead. Police say they've talked to the baby sitter, and an investigation is under way.
The crucial catch came two days after a bystander threw himself onto a Manhattan subway track to save a man who had fallen, and a day after police officers delivered a baby on a Brooklyn subway platform.
The city's police commissioner calls it a "week of heroes in New York."

Rifle-wielding man arrested near UA; suspicious device found in his home
By Alexis Huicochea , Arizona Daily Star Fri Jan 5, 3:41 AM ET
A 32-year-old gun-wielding man was arrested Thursday near the University of Arizona after police found chemicals in his pockets that he claimed were explosive.
John David Nordlof of the 1600 block of East 10th Street was confronted by police shortly after 1 p.m. when a passer-by reported that he was walking down the street waving a rifle, said Sgt. Eugene Mejia, a UA Police Department spokesman.
When Nordlof was approached by a UA police officer in the 1000 block of East 10th, a search revealed that he had two canisters with an unknown liquid inside, Mejia said. He also had several knives.
The Tucson Police Department bomb unit analyzed the chemicals, which turned out to be harmless, said Sgt. Decio Hopffer, a Tucson police spokesman.
However, Nordlof was reciting formulas for explosives, prompting police to believe that he may have had explosives in his residence.
The bomb unit went to his home, and after a search warrant was obtained, a robot was sent inside to search, Hopffer said.
There was one suspicious device that contained ammonium nitrate, black powder and a hobby rocket motor.

New Book Charges Israel Pushing U.S. to Attack Iran
07:33 Dec 31, '06 / 10 Tevet 5767
(IsraelNN.com) Israel and the pro-Israel lobby in Washington are
pushing the Bush administration into war on Iran, according to charges in a
new book written by a former United Nations weapons inspector. Scott
Ritter, who also has been a strong opponent to the American war in Iraq,
wrote in "Target Iran" that the United States is preparing to attack
Iran.
He charged that the Iranian nuclear program is a pretext for an attack.
"The Bush administration, with the able help of the Israeli government
and the pro-Israel Lobby, has succeeded in exploiting the ignorance of
the American people about nuclear technology and nuclear weapons,"
Ritter wrote. "If there is an American war with Iran, it is a war that was
made in Israel and nowhere else."
Ritter accused the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) of
having an inherent dual loyalty and declared it should be registered as
a foreign agent. He dismissed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's
remarks about destroying Israel as nothing more than a "sick joke."
Two years ago, he accused Israeli intelligence of purposely
exaggerating a minimal threat from Iraq in order to push the U.S. into attacking
the country and overthrowing Saddam Hussein.

Iranian official: If threatened, we will use nuclear weapons.
Irans chief nuclear envoy Ali Larijani said on Friday that Iran is committed to the peaceful use of nuclear technology but warned the situation could change if his country is threatened.
We oppose obtaining nuclear weapons and we will peacefully use nuclear technology under the framework of the Nonproliferation Treaty, but if we are threatened, the situation may change, he told a news conference after two days of talks in Beijing.
Irans nuclear chief said his country has produced and stored 250 tons of the gas used as the feedstock for uranium enrichment, state-run television reported Friday.
Vice President Gholamreza Aghazadeh, who is also the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said Iran has kept the uranium hexaflouride gas, or UF-6, in underground tunnels at a nuclear facility in Isfahan to protect it from any possible attack.
Today, we have produced more than 250 tons of UF-6. Should you visit Isfahan, you will see we have constructed tunnels that are almost unique in the world, State-run television quoted Aghazadeh as saying."

He should know, as he designs the nuclear weapons we have.
I laugh at the fools, who say it will be 10 years before it is ready.
The further left they are, the longer it will take for Iran to build the weapon.................why, do they really hate us that much?
They already have them...

The Prophet as a Man 108: War Preparedness
Adil Salahi, Arab News
Despite what the enemies of Islam say, particularly nowadays, and what impression some fringe groups of Muslim hard-liners advocate, Islam is a religion of peace, which prefers to live with all communities in an atmosphere of mutual respect and true understanding. However, Islam does not shrink from fighting a war imposed on it by its enemies. This could be by launching a straightforward attack on Muslim population or Muslim land, such as Israel did when it attacked Gaza and Lebanon in recent months, or by imposing some sort of siege, which prevents Muslims from advocating their faith through free speech. In fact Islam does not require from anyone more than the basic freedom of speech and conviction, which are as essential to human existence as food and drink. Without such freedom, mans life will not be different from that of animals.
Such a serious approach to life which allows for the possibility of war, should the enemy force it on Muslims, makes it very important to be prepared. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was always prepared and he took the necessary precautions for safety, should war erupts. At the time, fighters had their weapons, such as swords and spears, and they also wore coats of mail and used shields to protect themselves against the enemy. Hence, we have descriptions of what armament the Prophet had. He used these in war.
Anas ibn Malik reports: Abu Talhah used to put up his shield to protect the Prophet and himself together. Abu Talhah was a good marksman with arrows. When he threw his arrows at the unbelievers, the Prophet would look up to see what they hit. (Related by Al-Bukhari.)
This was in the Battle of Uhud, when most of the Muslim army suffered from confusion and retreated. The battle ended in a bitter military defeat for Muslims. Abu Talhah, who was Anas stepfather, was one of the few Muslim fighters who remained steadfast, and he was close to the Prophet defending him as best he could, using his skill in aiming arrows at the enemy. The Prophet used to hand him the arrows to aim at the unbelievers. He was very devoted to the Prophet.
In that battle, the Qurayshs plan aimed to kill the Prophet at all costs and also to kill as many as possible of the leading figures in the Muslim community. A group of their fighters were pledged to do their best to ensure that the Prophet would be killed. When confusion was widespread among the Muslims, there was a clear chance for them to achieve their purpose. Hence, they launched their determined attack, and the Prophet received more than one injury. However, he and the few of his companions who were close to him managed to repel the attack and foil the aim of the Quraysh.
Al-Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam reports: On the Day of the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet wore two coats of mail. He wanted to climb a rock, but he could not. Talhah ibn Ubaydellah sat under him so as to help him get on top of the rock. I heard the Prophet say: Talhah has made it a must. (Related by Al-Tirmidhi.) What Talhah made a must is his own admission into heaven. He defended the Prophet as no one else did. Indeed he was the hero of the day. According to Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, Talhah remained close to the Prophet while the rest of us made some leaps forward and came back to him. He was badly injured in the battle, but he was determined that no one could get to the Prophet.
When the Prophet wanted to climb this rock, he was injured. In fact, because of the thrust of the attack on him, the Prophet fell into a hole and received his injury. Therefore, Ali and Talhah helped him to climb, with Ali holding his hand and Talhah lifting him, sitting under him. Needless to say, a coat of mail is heavy, and to have two of them and an injury weakens a person considerably. Hence, the Prophet needed this help in rising from the hole and climbing the rock.
Perhaps it is useful to learn what sort of coat of mail the Prophet used to have. One report is given by Amir Al-Shaabi, a scholar of the Tabieen generation which succeeded the Prophets companions. He said: Ali ibn Al-Husayn showed us the Prophets coat of mail. It was thin, Yemeni made with rings for hanging. If it is hanged by its rings, it is lifted and if kept without hanging, it touched the floor. Another description mentions that the Prophets coat of mail had two rings of silver at the place of a persons chest and two additional silver rings in the back. Imam Jaafar Al-Sadiq says: I put it on and it touched the floor. (Both these reports are related by Abu Al-Shaykh and Ibn Saad.) No wonder that the Prophet could not climb out of the hole without help, having these two coats of mail and his injury.
The Prophet was well prepared for fighting at any time with the enemy. When Makkah fell to Islam, it was clear to all that the unbelievers were not in a position to fight. Nevertheless, the Prophet was well prepared, and he ordered his companions to be prepared, in case the idolaters, or a section of them, found it too hard to let the Prophet take over the city without a fight. Therefore, the Prophet wore his full body armor.
Anas ibn Malik reports: The Prophet entered Makkah on the day when it was taken over, wearing a helmet. When he took it off, a man came and said: Ibn Khatal is holding to the covering of the Kaaba. The Prophet ordered him to be killed. He was not in the state of consecration on that day. (Related by Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawood, Al-Nassaie and Ibn Majah.)
The relevant point in this Hadith is the fact that the Prophet was wearing his helmet to protect him from a head injury should there be any fighting. However, we need to explain who was this man the Prophet ordered to be killed at a time when he pardoned all the Quraysh despite their 20 years of hostility to Islam during which they launched several attacks on Muslims, persecuted them, attempted to assassinate the Prophet and were persistent in their disbelief. In fact the Prophet had named a number of people, less than 20, ordering their execution. However, most of them were subsequently pardoned, but four were killed including this man.
Abdullah ibn Khatal used to be a Muslim. The Prophet once sent him to collect zakah from people who lived far away. He traveled with another man and a servant of his who was a Muslim. At one stage on the way they stopped. He gave the servant orders to slaughter a big goat and prepare food for him while he himself went to sleep. When he woke up, he discovered that the servant had not done anything. He killed his servant and, fearing the Prophets punishment, reverted to idolatry. He also had two slave girls who used to sing for him and for his companions songs full of abuse of the Prophet. The Prophets instructions specified that the two slave girls should also be killed. The man was killed as he was actually holding on to the coverings of the Kaaba. Abu Barzah Al-Aslami and Saeed ibn Hurayth Al-Makhzumi killed him along with one of his slave girls. The other managed to flee until someone sought a special pardon for her from the Prophet, which he granted.
