World Terrorism: News, History and Research Of A Changing World #6 Disinformation, Inc.
Global Politician/Ocnus.Net ^ | Dec 17, 2006 | Professor Daniel M. Zucker

VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.

From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.

Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for “medical reasons”. The clue to detecting the fake “dissident” is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal “dissident” was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.

One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.

MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.

Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.

Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled “Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?”, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.

Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's “reformed revolutionary”. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the “imam” on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.

He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following “hunger strikes”, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

Dr. Bill will be on the radio, in 5 minutes, to listen on line, go to kgo.com

I had to laugh, he knew the liberals would be ready for taking him on, so he opened his program, with details of what he had watched Saddam do, via satalites of the Military, as it happened and also in military photos.

Including, Saddams liking for shooting the mothers in the heads and throwing them in a pit (learned from Hitler?), and tossing in their babies and children, to bury alive.

He said he had talked to an Iraqi, who had also seen it in real life and what the man had to say about the babies screams as they died under all the dirt.

Do you know, I do not think he had a call from a liberal, to tell him how awful it was that Saddam had been hung...........

We had 3 hours of science questions.

I had to admit that I am too old to understand the Africa wars.

The town article was interesting, but note that it is working, only because, they choose to live in a nice town, and the clinton gang did not move them there.

I did not understand, the reasons behind the U.S. always being the ones to take thousands of refugees.

And then I did understand, it is the Communist Manifesto, move in those who will vote for you and dilute the vote.

EXCLUSIVE: Saddam Transcript -- 'Terrorism Is Coming'

Ruler Said Anti-U.S. Terror Attacks Inevitable, But That Iraq Would
Not Be Behind Them

Feb. 15, 2006 â€" - The following is a translation of portions of an
undated conversation between Saddam Hussein and Tariq Aziz, his deputy
prime minister, that occurred some time in the years before the
dictator was removed from power.

TARIQ AZIZ: There is nothing left except the Americans casting doubt
that Iraq may produce biological weapons and use them for terrorism...

The serial number of every missile is known, because our suppliers
were the Russians, the Soviets. Our missiles are the Russian missiles
that we bought. The Russian invoices are clear, sometimes there are
discrepancies, but they are checked and they were checked and it was
over. This many, 100 missiles. This is the evidence and they cannot ...

SADDAM HUSSEIN: The situation is a pity. Had I known that the war
would end, we would have found them on Israel's head.

AZIZ: With respect to the issue of biological weapons which lingers.
If the French and Russians help us, we could find a solution. I don't
think it's farfetched that we could find a solution. All this talk
that Iraq can produce it and use it for terrorism is nonsense. One can
say that any country can use it.

HUSSEIN: Terrorism is coming. I told the Americans a long time before
August 2 and told the British as well, I think Hamed was there keeping
the meeting minutes with one of them, that in the future there will be
terrorism with weapons of mass destruction. What prevents this
technology from developing and people from smuggling it? All of this,
before the stories of smuggling, before that, in 1989. I told them,
"In the future, what would prevent that we see a booby-trapped car
causing a nuclear explosion in Washington or a germ or a chemical one?"

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Sir, the germ, any biologists can make a bottle at
home.

SADDAM: This is coming, this story is coming but not from Iraq.

AZIZ: Sir, the biological is very easy to make. It's so simple that
any biologist can make a germ bottle and drop it into a septic tank
and kill 100,000. This is not done by a state, no need to accuse a
state, an individual can do it. Even an American in a house, close to
the White House, I mean, they don't have a logical argument.

The Iran-Cuba Axis
By Frederick W. Stakelbeck
FrontPageMagazine.com | January 18, 2006

In a letter to then Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev regarding his
role in
the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro reflected
upon
the possible use of nuclear weapons during the U.S.-Soviet
confrontation,
"It was my opinion that, in case of an American invasion [Cuba], a
massive
and total nuclear strike would have to be launched." Given Castro's
affection for nuclear weapons, it should come as no surprise to
observers
that the aging terrorist has befriended Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad. Just last week, Ahmadinejad, a recognized anti-Semite and
human
rights violator, threatened unspecified retaliation against the West
unless
it recognized his own country's nuclear ambitions. "If they want to
deny us
our right, we have ways to secure those rights," he said in Tehran.

Given Castro and Ahmadinejad's mutual distaste for the U.S. and
Western-styled democracy, increased bilateral cooperation between the
two
countries presents serious national security concerns for the U.S. This
month, Iranian Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani
noted
the importance of expanding Tehran-Havana relations saying both
countries
must come together to confront unilateralism of "the big power" -- an
obvious reference to the U.S.

continued, I checked, it was still at the url.

Security and Intelligence Websites

First of all a Collegue of mine and I are compiling a webpage, that
combines all the top really useful websites (The best of the
best)well that is the intent.

The General page is here
http://www.vuw.ac.nz/library/subjectguides/politicalscience/websites/index.aspx

and the specific
Intelligence and Security webpage here

http://www.vuw.ac.nz/library/subjectguides/politicalscience/websites/intelligence.aspx

This is a work in Progress, and if anyone has any cool suggestions,
that they think would make this really good, it would be really good
to hear from you.

European Strategic Intelligence and Security Center (ESISC)
http://www.esisc.org/index.asp

This is a compilation of the email correspondence that l have had
from Claude MONIQUET, the Director General of European Strategic
Intelligence and Security Center (ESISC)

This is a Free website

Claude says for the moment, our website is mostly in French because
we are French speaking, but we have hundreds of English speaking
people coming each day to visit it. We plan, progressively, to have
more in English and to open a complete English site by the end of the
year. We have already a lot of documents in English in the various
sections of the site.

At the bottom of the right column. Under "Note d'analyses" (Analytic
Briefing), you'll find a lot of English texts.
http://www.esisc.org/analyses.asp

Claude, also says that they are an NGO. ... as an NGO we don't charge
the public for the analysis we provide, we only charge companies and
governments to fund our work.

I reckon, his website is definately worth having a look at.

CARICATURES OF MOHAMMAD: THE HISTORY AND CONSEQUENCES OF A GLOBAL
MANIPULATION by Claude Moniquet, Chairman of ESISC (09/02/06)

Since the beginning of February, hardly a day has gone past without
demonstrations and violence. In Damascus and Beirut, Danish and
Norwegian embassies and consulates have been wrecked and burned. In
Tehran, the Austrian embassy (the country is presiding over the EU
for six months) was stoned, and the Revolutionary Guard closely
linked to the regime of the mullahs tried to set it on fire (...). In
Europe, measures were taken to ensure the security of certain media
organisations. And each day the crisis worsened and turned into a
global stand-off between the international Islamist movement on the
one hand and a Europe perceived as an enemy on the other(...). How
did it come to this, and what is likely to happen tomorrow? Those are
the two questions this paper will try to answer.

Website #2

This website is all in English.

They also have some very interesting information, and is certainly
worth paying a visit to.

AXIS INFORMATION AND ANALYSIS (AIA)
http://www.axisglobe.com/

This website has a Russian Flavour to it.

Security/Intelligence
http://www.axisglobe.com/newslist.asp?section=8

On its About us page
http://www.axisglobe.com/about.asp

AIA is an information agency that unites professionals having years
of experience in collecting and analyzing information about Asia and
Eastern Europe. AIA's main attention is focused upon those states
that represent a threat to regional and international security, as
well as upon areas of ethnic and religious conflict. At the same
time, AIA follows the events in those countries that are going
through political and socio-economic cataclysms.

Specific features of the information

The Worldwide Web is full of current information on Asia and Eastern
Europe. Most of it is rather fragmentary and shallow. That is why it
is rather difficult to understand the processes taking place in this
region. Moreover, the systematization and processing of the separate
items demands a enormous amount of time.
AIA`s goal is to perform a complex analysis of information on the
current issues of this region. That is the reason why our website
contains such a considerable amount of reference material.

Sources of information

AIA uses materials from electronic and printed mass media; books,
specialized periodicals, academic editions, officially published
governmental documents, and public archives from different countries.
AIA collects information in the framework of various political,
academic, and commercial events (press-conferences, symposia,
seminars, exhibitions, fairs). Furthermore, AIA’s highly professional
staff uses its personal sources in governmental bodies, and in
commercial and academic circles of the countries in the specified
region.

AIA staff

AIA unites journalists, ex-diplomats, and former officers of the
special services of a number of Asian and Eastern-European countries.
Some of our authors still work in civil service. Those, as well as
some other AIA authors, use pen names for reasons of personal
security.

Iran MP regrets Arab response to Saddam death

LONDON, January 1 (IranMania) - A prominent lawmaker expressed regret
over the reaction of some Arab countries to Saddam Hussein's death by
hanging.

Speaking on the sidelines of Eid Al-Adha prayers at Tehran University,
Hassan Ghafourifard also told IRNA that following the execution of
Iraq's ruthless criminal, some Arab countries either remained silent or
protested.

"Some countries such as Libya declared a public mourning, which is
quite
different from what other nations wanted. This demonstrates the
predominance of fanaticism over reason and humanitarianism in their
ruling systems," he said.

"The world of Islam is jubilant over Saddam's execution, for the hands
of this corrupt creature was tainted with the blood of over 500,000
Muslims, while over 1 million Muslims have become physically
handicapped
and hundreds of thousands of families lost their breadwinners due to
his
criminal actions."

The MP emphasized that execution was the least punishment that could be
meted to such a dictator, for he was among the most criminal of
criminals in the world.

Ghafourifard viewed Saddam as an agent who, by cooperating with
colonizers at a time when the world of Islam was at the peak of its
power, inflicted the greatest damage on Iran and Iraq, and created a
rift among Muslim countries.

In June 2002 I wrote a column for the Minneapolis Star Tribune regarding Yasser Arafat's responsibility for the 1973 assassination of two United States State Department officers -- Ambassador Cleo Noel and charge d'affaires Curtis Moore -- in Khartoum, Sudan. The column was based on accounts of the events in David Korn's Assassination in Khartoum, Neil Livingstone and David Halevy's Inside the PLO, and the testimony of former National Security Agency analyst Jim Welsh. Welsh has doggedly purused the story for over thirty years as a result of his personal involvement in disseminating a warning relating to the communications intercepted by the NSA in 1973.

Israeli Passenger Jet Makes Emergency Landing In Athens

An Israeli passenger plane carrying 230 people landed safely at Athens
International Airport on Sunday after experiencing technical
difficulties,
local reports in Athens said.

Pilots on board the Israeli 757 Boeing plane had requested to make an
emergency landing, saying they were experiencing technical difficulties
in
Greek airspace.

The plane, on its way from Tel Aviv to Paris, had been circling above
Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos airport in an attempt to use up its fuel
before landing.

Iran's nuclear program, according to Israeli defense officials who
recently held talks with senior officers in the Western military
alliance.

NATO's interest stems from growing concern that diplomacy will
ultimately fail, the Israeli officials told The Jerusalem Post this
week, and that military action will be necessary to stop Iran's race to
obtain nuclear weapons.

Earlier in the month, IDF Military Intelligence (MI) hosted a NATO
conference on global terrorism and intelligence, following which
high-ranking MI officers said Israel planned to establish an
intelligence-sharing mechanism with NATO.

"There is a growing interest on NATO's part regarding the intelligence
collected around the world on Iran's nuclear program," a senior defense
official said. "They want to get to know the material just in case."

According to the official, Iran was, until now, a "taboo" issue for
NATO
and was rarely brought up in official functions and talks between
member
countries. The official said that recently senior military officials in
NATO have expressed growing interest in the up-to-date Israeli
assessment on Iran.

A diplomatic official said that Iran was a "sensitive issue" for NATO
and that while there were certainly countries - like the United States
-
that would like to see possible NATO involvement on the issue, other
members from Europe were so far preventing this from happening.

"There are people who want this issue to come up and want NATO to start
talking about Iran," the official said. An important organization with
great military capabilities, NATO, the official said, should at least
begin to discuss the nuclear threat emanating from Iran even without
connection to possible military action against the Islamic Republic.

"This should be on NATO's agenda," the official said. "But since NATO
works by consensus among its members, countries have the ability to
prevent discussions on certain issues."

In line with the efforts to enhance military cooperation with NATO, the
IDF plans to dispatch a Navy officer to Naples in the coming weeks,
where he will participate in Operation Active Endeavor.

NATO launched Operation Active Endeavor in the wake of 9/11 and has
succeeded in bringing together a number of countries from the
Mediterranean that work together in a joint headquarters based out of
Naples and share information concerning naval terror.

Unmasked: the veiled white Muslim convert whose great grandmother was a
suffragette
By NEIL SEARS Last updated at 23:00pm on 29th December 2006

She was presented by Channel 4 as an authentic - but anonymous - voice
of moderate British Islam.

And on Christmas Day the veiled woman described only as "Khadijah" was
given a national televison platform for propagating her views in an
"alternative Christmas message" designed to rival the Queen's.

She told viewers Jack Straw was wrong to criticise the veil, claiming
concealing facial features "liberated" women.

But the Daily Mail can now unveil "Khadijah" - and reveal that she is
in
fact Elaine Atkinson, an English convert to Islam who travels the
country working for a radical muslim group trying to take political
control of Pakistan.

And despite her presentation by Channel 4 as a moderate, in the past
the
38-year-old has described non-believers as "rats in cages going round
on
a treadmill" of consumerism, and declares she would like to see
Britain's pubs converted into mosques.

Since going through an islamic marriage ceremony with a British-born
muslim of Pakistani origin, Miss Atkinson - a fromer radical feminist -
has become known as Khadijah Iqbal.

But her rejection of her English roots caused a rift with her family,
which has a long history of military and police service.

Her great-grandmother was a suffragette, and her brother is currently
serving as a soldier in Afghanistan, she claimed.

Atkinson, a mother of one, was approached by Channel 4 to give the
controversial alternative Christmas message after the original veiled
woman chosen, Khadija Ravat, a 33-year-old islamic teacher, withdrew
because of negative publicity.

Channel 4 said it would be veiling her true identity, along with her
face, to enable viewers to focus on her words instead of her
personality.

But the story of her rejection of her traditional English background,
and her determination to embrace radical Islam, is a fascinating one.

She was born in the army barracks town of Tidworth in Wiltshire in
1968,
to father Brian Atkinson, then a crane driver at a military depot, and
mother Gillian.

At the time the family was living in police accommodation, because her
paternal grandfather Francis was a police constable in the war
department.

Atkinson led a normal English childhood, and after being schooled
locally without any contact with muslims, left the countryside for
London and became a social worker.

But in 1996 she suddenly became interested in the koran, and started
attending the Regent's Park Mosque in the centre of the capital.

Atkinson said: "Much to the shock and horror of my family and friends I
embraced Islam.

"My friends, family and colleagues were very keen to express their
negative views.

"I had always been known as a radical Feminist and had dutifully
continued the family tradition of following in the footsteps of my
great-grandmother, who was a suffragette.

"Much to my greatgrandmother 's horror (if she were still here to
express it) I was soon to discover that Feminism and Islam went
together
like oil and water.

"I realised Feminism promoted the very thing it protested against:
oppression of women."

Atkinson went on, in an essay published on the Internet for fellow
muslims: "When I see large numbers of non-believers I feel very sad for
them as they remind me of rats or gerbils in cages going round and
round
on a treadmill, believing that they are fulfilling their sole purpose
in
life and reaching their true destiny (which is Argos).

"If only they could uncover their eyes and see the damage they cause
themselves and to their children.

"I feel certain that if they were to have a tiny glimpse of what Islam
could give them there would be Mosques on every corner instead of
pubs."

Atkinson now lives with her husband Dr Zahid Iqbal, 38, who qualified
as
a doctor at Southampton in 1992, in a £350,000 three-bed house in
Barking, east London. She abandoned her English name four years.

She works for the radical Minhaj ul Qur'an group from its UK base at a
mosque in nearby Forest Gate - running a "sisters' group" for other
female muslims, travelling the country making converts, and
broadcasting
on Asian local radio stations.

Minhaj ul Qur'an was established in Pakistan, but operates in 92
countries, and aims to convert the whole world in Islam.

In Pakistan the religious group has a political wing - the Pakistan
People Movement - which boasts it is "actively working to establish an
Islamic state in Pakistan" to ensure "muslims have an international
voice and political power to relieve the ongoing oppression and
subjugation of muslims around the world".

Atkinson - pictured in a rare unveiled moment when returning home from
a
shopping trip - last night refused to elaborate on her views.

Contrary to her claims of being moderate, at an Islamic conference in
Sheffield this year Atkinson told fellow muslims it was morally wrong
to
listen to any sort of music, or to watch soap operas. She urged the
conference to stop watching any television at all.

In a statement issued through Channel 4, Atkinson said last night:
"Minhaj-ul-Quran is a spiritual movement which promotes peace and
tolerance of other faiths. It is against all forms of extremism and
radicalism whether religious or otherwise."

Atkinson's brother Howard Atkinson, 46, is a soldier. He was last night
unvailable for comment - as were their parents, who have moved to
Spain.

Atkinson last night insisted that she did enjoy listening to islamic
music.
