I don't think the value of a human life should be judged by ability to pay for one's rescue from danger. What happens to people isn't always within their control. Besides, I don't care for the nasty tone of this column. My hearts go out to the missing climbers and pray for their rescue and their safe return to their families.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." -Manuel II Paleologus

Just that class we don't teach anymore in kindergarten. Every choice has a consequence. Time people understood that the rest of the world can't bail them out for their failures to make right choices. A better choice would have been to go up to the sights of Mt. Hood on July 4th.

"My hearts go out ..."

Didn't Bill Clinton coin that phrase?

Ice fishermen go out on Lake St. Clare (Between Huron and Erie) and like clockwork the Coast Guard has to go and pluck them off a broken chunk of ice. I think they are now getting a pickup charge.

Ah, but governments in their ultimate wisdom tax cigaretts which taxes hit the least able to pay the hardest.

Two very good points that have absolutely nothing to do with the these missing climbers on Mt. Hood.

By all means, rescue them. But when things settle down a bit....hand them a bill which I feel confident they'll be able to afford. The author was stating that he doesn't believe that this type of rescue operation should be paid for by taxpayers. And he is correct.

Second, this situation was well within their control. They purposely went into bad conditions thinking they'd prepared accordingly. They guessed wrong. Far different than the recent situation with the Kim family.

Stupidity should be painful.

Well aren't you precious. I don't know your politics but by reading your response and your tag line, it's a real good imitation of a bleeding heart Liberal. I agree with the writer of the article. I live in Hawaii where there are sharks in the ocean. I see swimmers here swimming way out from shore instead of using their heads and going our a short ways and swimming parallel with the beach. Guess what, sometimes they get shark bites. Duuuuhhhh. It's hard to feel sorry for idiots that don't listen to good advice, nor do they want any.

It's a nasty tone for sure brought on by fret from the media and nothing else newsworthy. I cannot help to think the technology manpower and assets being used presently to search for them could have been used to patrol our open border to the south which would have a very positive effect.

I also hope one of the rescue helicopters doesn't run into trouble looking for them. It is true the value of the climbers' lives is high, but is it high enough to cause the deaths of others? I hope the potential rescuers are safe and the climbers are also safe, foolish as their climb might have been.
