Welcome to the folding at home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.
While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's members, or it's founders, it is comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing, who have banded together, to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via Distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimers, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 777th place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, links are provided to the program, or it is easily googled by "folding@home".
I'm at 379 now, I'll probably still be on this time next year. lol
I've lost complete WU efforts to date when Win98SE crashes. Now I back up the directories associated with the big ones, especially as they approach completion.
I lost all of my 6th unit when it went off the first time. It started a new packet, I think they called it.
There may be percentages inside. The highest percentage is likely close to where your WU is. Then simple math can be used to determine how long that percentage took and then how long the remaining percentage will take.
I guess my comment was more directed at Drango, or anyone else, looking for a cheap way to come with additional folding boxes.
If it's 500, it'll be finished in a year and a half. :-)
I understand. It's always possible to lose something if the power gets yankned out from under the machine. My only point is that all of the versions I've seen so far at least try to minimize the possibility of loss. It still can happen though, so we dust off our shoes and continue on. :-)
Maybe if your power keeps going off every night. :-) You should be done within a day or so. I've had some that ran for 6-7 days.
I have a machine that takes just over seven days to do a 600 point WU and that's 24/7.
I don't see anything newer than Jan. 4th.
What's weird is, I tried to run it on my F drive after it messed up on my C drive. My F drive is never used and has more than 4 times unused space. When that didn't work, I changed directories and put it back on C drive again.
I never shut this thing off unless there's a storm moving in, or my wacky electric goes on the fritz. I heard a long time ago it was bad for computers to keep turning them on and off.
Example:
I'm currently working two WUs on my P4 HT, one is a 600 pt WU (73% complete), and the other is a 240 pointer (26% complete). So the team should get about 840 more points from me in a few days.
I was folding for redstate.com, but moved to the FR team when it became obvious that they couldn't fend off Kos and DU.

Welcome...This is more about Ronald Reagan than it is FR. I'd like to think any group from Protestwarriors, Lucianne, to Captains Quarters etc would feel free to join in and fold one for the Gipper.

Welcome aboard, Mr. O, and all those other new contributors.
Each and every CPU and member joining the team, makes a difference, even if at first, it seems to be just a little, over the weeks, and months, they add up, and make a significant contribution.
Sorry I haven't been posting as much, as I was, but this week, several projects have me bare naked, and up against the wall, so while my cpus are folding on, I've been strapped for time to actively participate in this forum.
But, I do get time to check stats, and note that we're rapidly closing on half a million points, and the top 600,
and the top 500 within a week, is entirely possible, and highly likely.
Hell, what was it, 2 1/2 weeks ago, that someone predicted that we might break 1000, and 200,000 points by New years?
We blew right past that, about 3 days early, and haven't looked back since. I predict, top 200 within a month, and top 100, within 2 months. Let the DUmmies suck on that for awhile... :)
And yes, while I do this for the science, I'm also a multi-tasker, and check the DU thread daily, to see what their head cheerleader is dancing about.
The notion that the DU team, could ever catch up to a group of dedicated conservatives, is indicative, of their mental state. They're the little train, that coulda, shoulda, stayed at home.

Interesting. My dual-core EM64T and the other dual-core AMD64, are still running neck and neck at positions 29 and 30.
The EM64T has 2gb of ram and is a 2.8 cpu but it is slightly overclocked to 3.0. It is running two console versions.
The AMD64x2 is a 4400 (what is that? 2.2?) with 1gb of ram. It, too, is running a console on each core.
