No, but man I hope it's true.
I've been saying for a long time that what's need is a Cambodia-style "incursion" into Syria.

taking Syria out is crucial if we want to *really* get Syrious about Iran, and if we do take them out, Iran may fold without a shot.

None of those details make any sense. It doesn't sound like hot pursuit across the border, in which things could conceivably get messy.
If we were to make a deliberate assault into Syria, there wouldn't be any 'locked in battle' about it. We'd go in, try and capture the targets, and flatten anyone that got in the way.

Syrian border guards opened fire on the American force This is a bogus story.

Is Debka not the most reliable of sources?
To: Dog
I'm just curious: has anyone ever read a story at DEBKA that turned out to be true? Off hand, I can't think of one such case, but maybe it does happen occasionally, which is why I am asking.

Hard to keep a major incursion into Syria a secret. Doesn't seem likely that only Marines would cross over either. Air contingents and forward deployed Special Ops and other units would be a part of something like this.
Debka does this often and most likely a hoax.......for now!

I seriously doubt that U.S. forces would cross the Syrian border to retrieve some Al Qaeda. Not worth the international complications.
To: Dog
I've seen the Syrians on TV claiming that there have been occasional skirmishes between them and US forces.
I'd be more inclined to believe it was another of these border skirmishes without the underlying embellishment from Debka.

Most likely, the Syrians fired from across their border and Marines returned fire.
