I'm noticing that the prices of these items add up to over $100. Wouldn't I be better off just buying a used computer for $100 that has these connections? I know someone who claims he can sell me a used computer with a lot of stuff on it cheap. I figure anything newer than a 2000 model would probably have the proper USB port.
P.S. Are the prices listed there correct? The guy from the cable company claimed it would only cost about $10 at Best Buy for that USB card.

Can't say how much the Geek Squad costs but you need to think of your time and sanity when calculating their worth.
Nevermind the USB port! I'm outright telling you to go with the network card and router firewall!!
If you're comfortable opening your computer and plugging in cards to the PCI slots, then that part is easy. If you're running Windows XP, the next time you start the computer it will recognize and configure the card for you. If you're running Windows 98/ME, well, do yourself a huge favor and buy a new computer.
Hey everyone, PJ is just $10 away from getting a new computer to publish his world famous DUmmie FUnnies!!
If you're comfortable reading technical manuals, setting up the router with firewall components is not out of the realm of the neophyte. You can always call the geek squad to clean up your mess.

Does Best Buy really have a Geek Squad? Do they really make house calls? My computer tech at the repair shop down the road is ready to disconnect his phone because I am calling him so much. My computer keeps disconnecting from Earthlink. He has put in two new modems. I still have the problem. It started when lightening evidently came in on my computer. I had to have the (what is that box thingy?) replaced. Now he wants me to take a regular phone outside and find some kind of thing attached to my house by the phone company and plug my phone in the user's side to see if there is any static on it. If there is I am supposed to call the phone company as it is a problem in the phone line. I have walked around my house and searched for some thingy that looks like what he is talking about, but I don't see it.
I think he is pulling my leg.

Ok, now cut it out. You're really screwing up my readings.
Do I need to head for the bunker or not?

If you're running Windows 98/ME, well, do yourself a huge favor and buy a new computer. Then it sounds like I need a new computer. Also I hate buying these cards only to find them unneccessary later on when I get a later model computer with this stuff already available.
If you're comfortable reading technical manuals, setting up the router with firewall components is not out of the realm of the neophyte.
Maybe better to get a geek to do that.

GO to Radio Shack PJ, tell them what you need, and they will give it to you. As for a network card you can get one of those just about anywhere. Best Buy, Staples, any such place. They come with instructions as to how to install.

GO to Radio Shack PJ, tell them what you need, and they will give it to you. I went. Out of stock. But I think any place is always cheaper than Radio Shack. Hey, the same cell phone batteries they sell for $50+, I sell retail for just $15.

Wouldn't I be better off just buying a used computer for $100 that has these connections?Yes and no. I presume it will have an OS installed. It may come with lots of viruses as well!
Even if you get a new computer, you will regret connecting it to the cable modem via USB port. Doing so gives your PC a public internet address and without careful firewalling on your computer, you are just begging to be hacked. And alas, there are many who would be pleased to hack your computer. (The current dial up gives you some protection through your ISP)
A hardware router/firewall gives your computer an internal address and the public address is used for the router itself. There are some extra firewall features on most routers that are helpful as well.
My suggestion would be a new computer that wont give you trouble down the road. (eMachine at Best Buy for $389.99) As well as those components listed above. If this is too much, save the $30 a month on the cable modem service for a year and stick with dial up until you can get them.
