Astrology is one of those dealbreakers for me--the sign of a loon, period, no appeal.
I was laughing about this until you said that. Stopped me dead cold. What a sobering thought!
I couldn't do it tonight. I just could not read DUmmie FUnnies. All that astrology mumbo-jumbo always gives me a headache. I don't understand a house being in Leo or a moon being in Pisces and I don't want to understand it.
Not only that but evidently even the word astrology causes a mental block for me because I really read the title to be "Astrologers: What's in Karl Rove's closet?" I thought it might be interesting to know how many pairs of shoes Rove has and what kind. Does he own any dock shoes or tennies? Inquiring minds wanted to know.
Lots, but they're all right wingtips.
Truer words ne'er spoken. :)
Maybe my trouble with the cable modem was a blessing in disguise. Instead of installing the USB and opening up my computer to DUmmie attack, I now find out it is better to go the Ethernet route. So to sum up, I would need to install a nic card to use Ethernet? Correct? And is there anything else I would need to do security-wise to protect my computer using Ethernet? Also I am assuming I can install a nic card with Windows '98. If there is anything I have left out, please let me know because I will have this stuff done on Monday so let me know by then.
BTW, I am NOT forgetting that from now on, June 16 is officially Pied Piper Pitt Day.
Ding Ding Ding
We have a winner !!!!!
I was sorta ignorin this part of the thread, but to put money into an old computer, and pay someone to do it is sorta insane with the prices of computers what they are now, especially if you are gonna upgrade in the near future.
You sell batteries?
PJ,
You need to purchase the router/firewall system I linked to in the second paragragh of post #51. The nic card alone will not protect you from a hack attack. You must get both the nic card and router/firewall.
The nic card goes in your machine and connects to the router via Cat5 cable. The router connects to the cable modem via cat5 cable. Make sure you buy cables of the correct length for where you want to place your equipment.
FReepmail me if you need more help.
How many Cat 5 cables do I need? I already have one such cable for Ethernet that came with the kit.
You need 2 altogether. They come in differnt lengths so note how far apart the equipment will be.
As a sideline. I get them wholesale. Only the cellphone batteries. It always makes me chuckle when I see the same batteries selling at Radio Shack for $50+. The other day I was getting a soda and I heard someone at the restaurant mention that he had to get a cell phone battery. Of course I spoke up and sold him one for his Nokia 2270 (very popular cell phone) for just $15 brand new. The guy was really happy because he saved himself at least $30. A couple of weeks ago I took my laundry to a laudromat and the bill was $14. However, the woman told me she needed a new battery for her cell phone which I just happened to have (Audiovox 8900) so I gave her the battery in lieu of cash and she gave me a buck in change.
In fact I am thinking of getting off my lazy ass today and going out to sell a bunch of cell phone batteries to raise about $300 for a new computer.
My modem is close enough for the one they gave me to be long enough but how long does the other one have to be? And where does it go?
I might buy a newer used computer from a friend of mine. I need to make sure it has a connection for Ethernet. Yeah, if I have to spend $50 for upgrades then it is crazy not to buy another computer. This friend told me a few weeks ago he would sell me one for $100. He has an older computer that he upgraded. Will see this guy on Sunday probably.
The Cat5 cable that came with the cable modem can be plugged into the new router. The other Cat5 cable goes from the new router to the new nic card.
I would go with at least 6 feet if you are in close proximity to the cable modem and router combo but you can go longer.
Of course you could go wireless but that's probably best left for another day.
