The school claimed the necklace colors are gang related. It would be charitable to conclude that these school officials are simply nimrods. As is suggested, there's probably something conscious and incideous going on here.

The school's code of conduct states student's jewelry "will be safe, appropriate and not...interfere with the educational process." It also says "students will not wear any clothing deemed to be gang related." The code of conduct does not explicitly mention beads or beaded necklaces. But school officials say the beads have been affiliated with gangs in the past. So they're not allowed. "We want to make sure that our students have options to express themselves, but it has to be done in a way that's safe for everyone in the school building, said Shari Greenleaf, the attorney for the city school district

But isn't America "gang-related?" I mean, isn't a country just a really big gang?

Sounds to me as if the issue is not the colors of the necklace, but the fact that it is made of beads, especially since she says the
school colors are red, white and blue. It also looks like she is allowed to wear a shirt with Old Glory on it.
Sorry, I have to agree with the school authorities on this one, however jerky they're being. Wearing a necklace has nothing do with getting an education.
...maybe red-white-and-blue pom-poms would be acceptable?...

Yeah those liberals are pretty tough, picking on little girls for wearing patriotic jewlry. They should go start a protest at Camp Lejune.

Glad to see someone's suing. There needs to be a new
Tinker case - one that will end for good this despicable practice whereby schools justify any kind of repression of the First Amendment on the ground that it "encourages gangs."

The administration's rationale for this decision:
School officials say the color red is often affiliated with one particular gang, and the color blue is often affiliated with another.
This doesn't make sense. By their logic, ALL items that have either red or blue on them must be banned. This includes blue jeans, for example.
