The magnetic poles switching from north to south or vice versa is nothing new.

Well not in the last few weeks anyway, and never since man started navigating by compass.

With pocket GPS units under $50 these days, I'm not sure it matters....

Yes, but the iron patterns on the ocean floor indicate that it has happened in the past.
