German Police Raid Suspected Islamic Extremist Financing Network (2/2/05)

The Associated Press Published: Feb 2, 2005

BERLIN (AP) - German police on Wednesday carried out a series of raids on suspected members of a network believed to be financing Islamic extremist activities outside the country.

Thirty-three apartments and four businesses were searched early Wednesday morning, many of them in Bavaria but also in other regions, police said. The action was directed against 24 suspected members of the network, largely of Arab origin - including people of Lebanese, Iraqi, Egyptian and Tunisian nationality.

The suspects were aged 20 to 66 and were legal residents in Germany.

They are suspected of "financially supporting radical Islamic activities abroad by collection donations and procuring further money," a police statement said. Two of the suspects spent time at an extremist training camp in Afghanistan "some time ago," it added.

There was no immediate word on any arrests.
