I hope the Swifties return to that one Advert where the POWS are speaking, with Kerry drolling on in the background with his "burned whole villages" commie blather. That one was really effective I thought.

The Swift Boat ads are a good example of the importance of third party negative advertising for healthy politics and elections. Were it not for the dogged courage of the Swift Boat veterans and their paid ads, their account would have been buried and unknown to most of the public.
The Kerry campaign would obviously not have put the Swift Boat material out before the public; neither would the Bush campaign because Kerry's rejoinder would have been to cry foul over negative campaigning while pointing to real and contrived questions about Bush's non-combat National Guard Service; and the news media, even Fox, would have given the Swift Boat Vets little attention because the campaigns themselves had not brought their story up.
The effectiveness of the Swift Boat ads illustrates how elections can be a collaboration between the campaigns and the news media against the public, with information legitimately of interest often buried for tactical reasons. Not so on this occasion -- with all credit due to the Swift Boat vets.
