I once chatted with a crew chief on Marine 1 that had the same feelings about both Clinton and President Bush.

Clinton never returned their salute (not that they wanted him to), and president Bush ALWAYS does. He told the story of President Bush being distracted by his dog as he was getting on the helicopter and failed to return the Marines salute. After settling the dog down, the President dismounted the helicopter, just so he could show the proper respect.

I don't know how true the above story is, but I liked it.

He said that all of the detail LOVES to work for the President.

This is what makes me believe it could be true.

This story IS TRUE because I saw the video footage posted on FOX, CNBC or some other major news site (I don't remember which). If I recall correctly, he didn't fully go down the steps and re-enter the helicopter. Instead, he placed the dog inside the helicopter and partially descended the steps to salute.
