Professor Dumped Over Evolution Beliefs

A university professor said she was asked to resign for introducing elite students to flaws in Darwinian thought, and she now says academic freedom at her school is just a charade.

During a recent honors forum at Mississippi University for Women (MUW), Dr. Nancy Bryson gave a presentation titled "Critical Thinking on Evolution" -- which covered alternate views to evolution such as intelligent design. Bryson said that following the presentation, a senior professor of biology told her she was unqualified and not a professional biologist, and said her presentation was "religion masquerading as science."

The next day, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Vagn Hansen asked Bryson to resign from her position as head of the school's Division of Science and Mathematics.

"The academy is all about free thought and academic freedom. He hadn't even heard my talk," Bryson told American Family Radio News. "[W]ithout knowing anything about my talk, he makes that decision. I think it's just really an outrage."

Bryson believes she was punished for challenging evolutionary thought and said she hopes her dismissal will smooth the way for more campus debate on the theory of evolution. University counsel Perry Sansing said MUW will not comment on why Bryson was asked to resign because it is a personnel matter.

"The best reaction," Bryson says, "and the most encouraging reaction I have received has been from the students." She added that the students who have heard the talk, "They have been so enthusiastically supportive of me."

Bryson has contacted the American Family Association Center for Law and Policy and is considering taking legal action against the school.

Reading through a couple of short biographies of GWC, it seems unlikely to me he would even be remembered if he were not African American. He did not invent crop rotation; crop rotation has been known for hundreds or thousands of years. I can't find a single fundamental contribution of his to science, though I am admittedly not an Ag. Scientist.

He was undoubtedly a scientist, and apparently a good one, like thousands of forgotten individuals before or since. He overcame remarkable obstacles to get where he was (but on the other hand, I tell my students "No one wants to know how hard it was or how long it took"). But the rest of the stuff surrounding him appears to this observer very much like Black-History-Month-style racial tokenism, something I find patronizing and offensive.

Perhaps his admirers might consider being a little more skeptical. And in any case all this is rather off topic.

She's likely just parroting the usual creationist nonsense.

Of sourse we don't seem to know what she said. LOL Why can't people in college have the same discussions we can here? And why do evolution discussions have to be lead by biologists?

Notice that RWProf plays around on these threads on work time

You have no idea what my work time is. But I see if you can't get at the ideas, attacking the man is a good second.

Nice admission. Hey Retro and PH! You might want to frame this one.

Was this really your first clue that science doesn't do proofs? Did you think you were in geometry class?

I rejected all forms of religion years ago and haven't regretted my decision for a moment.

Well thank God it is a free country and you are welcome to do so.

Oops sorry.

How about, Thank the earth below that this is a free country and you are welcome to do so.

However you are missing the point about Christianity PW, it is not a religion as you would like to think of it. Not nearly so much as evolution or communism, where dissension leads to banishment, punishment or death. In spite of the fact that Lee and I disagree on evolution, we do agree that Jesus Christ did come to earth in the form of a man and died for our sins. We are not worthy of his sacrifice and there is nothing we can do to earn it. It is a free gift and you can either take or leave it. We choose to accept it you choose to reject it. So be it, only time will tell who made the right choice. As far as religion goes I don't really have any use for it either. Best of luck to you.

Best Regards,
Boiler Plate

OK, not just peanut butter. The question remains, do you know science from engineering?

Well, by now you've seen what the "chemistry professor" thinks of George Washington Carver, the Chemists' Chemist

You know, I'd find more skepticism about Carver in our Ethnic Studies Department. You guys really are a poor imitation of conservatives. Do y'all believe that civilization arose in Africa, and was stolen by the Greeks? What other big chunks of multiculturalist propaganda have you swallowed whole?

As for 'the Chemists' Chemist', you're kidding, right? Someone wrote that? Can you give me the cite?

As I've said elsewhere, from what I've read, the guy was probably a fair applied chemist, by the standards of his time; and it is remarkable he overcame birth into slavery so to become. But sheesh!

How about some transitional species? It's a sure bet that among the billions of fossils that have been found none exist. Even more important is the fact that if evolution were true there should be very little othe than transitional species.

There they go again, those evolutionists who just want an open record for the facts. /sarcasm

It is quite telling that an evolutionist can't ever allow anyone to express a view contrary to his.

So, for example, you're aware of the relationships between the tunicate genome and the vertebrate genome? You know that these point to a common ancestor 550 million years ago?

The Ford pinto and F-150 also point to the Model T, but that doesn't mean the Model T evolved.

Adhesives have been known since ancient times. Romans used to bleach their togas. Buttermilk has been known since ancient times. Chili sauce: try this http://www.tabasco.com/tabasco_history/mcilhenney.cfm .....

And so on. Give me a break.

Give me a break. You just don't like him because he is black. And a Christian probably, and a Christian who gave credit to God. The fact that crop rotations were not being used in America and he was able to implement their widespread use successfully deserves some credit.

He epitomizes what a scientist should be, someone who looks at the world around him and makes it better.

You are right, it is off topic. And threads on FR must never go off topic. But I hope my children never come into contact with RWP in a classroom. Shameful representation of a teacher.

Thanks for the information. I have no doubt as to commonality, after all we can eat the darn things, what is under discussion is the matter of how these common things came about.

He serves, apparently, to prove I'm not acceptably politically correct. Creationists never cease to amaze me. I think I've seen it all, and then they pull this kewl Al Sharpton imitation.
