Mexican Consulate Opens In Downtown Indianapolis. (Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish)
WISHTV 8 ^ | 11-2-02

The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.

You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.

"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.

The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.

Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.

"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.

The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.

"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.

The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

Ok, deep breath first..........

Miss Marple was referring to LEGAL immigrants, not illegals. Can you stop being bigoted a**holes long enough to read a complete post? I employ 75 seasonal mexican guys, all of which are LEGAL. Are you still paying attention? How do I know they're legal? Because, like most (read and pay attention - I said MOST, not ALL)employers here in IN, we check and double check. I can't get local guys to show up and work at all - let alone work hard, show up on time, not call in, and keep good attitudes. And before you give me the standard bigot argument - I pay my guys right in line with the white guys, as well. I also make sure that they are learning English, and working toward citizenship - if they don't aspire to be citizens, I don't bring them back the following year. I am sorry that the border states are having so much trouble. I do not have a good answer for that. But those problems stem from ILLEGAL immigration, and do not mean that we are too backwards here in the Midwest to know what is going on in our own cities. Not one time have we been condescending or insulting to you until now. But you have indeed earned it. And the next time you want to spew about how stupid and backwards we are, why don't you do a little research on the Agriculture School at Purdue, ot the engineering programs at Rose-Hulman, which rival MIT.

And for those of you who descend from bloodlines who didn't originally speak English. What do you think happened with your ancestors when they arrived here? Although I wouldn't be making this post if they had been hounded until they left (and thusly my blood pressure would also be lower), this is not what America is all about. We don't just close the borders because you're not happy with the way things are going. Do we need to have tighter controls and processes? Of course. Do we accomplish anything by insulting people who live in different parts of the country? Well I'd like to think you're objective enough to know the answer to that one.

But I won't hold my breath.......

Are you still paying attention? How do I know they're legal? Because, like most (read and pay attention - I said MOST, not ALL)employers here in IN, we check and double check.

And just how are most of the employers in Indiana checking and double checking? What sources are you utilizing to combat the massive fraud of illegal aliens that routinely use fradulent Social Security numbers, drivers licenses, green cards, etc etc.

And what is your source that tells you MOST employers in Indiana are checking and double checking? Do you personally know MOST of employers in Indiana are or are you just blowin smoke?

Can you stop being bigoted a**holes

It seems some here just can't see this ever escalating crisis for what it is, without attempting to blame American citizens and pulling the ol race/bigot card.......Very weak. If they are all legal, why would they need their OWN government consulate headquarters, in downtown Indianapolis? Do you think they are there to represent you? Are you still paying attention?

I employ 75 seasonal mexican guys, all of which are LEGAL.

It seems you have an agenda and a personal interest conflict here. And as far as your 75 employees being all legal, the chances of that are absolutely laughable! I would bet that at least 40 of them are here in this country illegally.

If everyone is legal and you have nothing to hide, give me the name of your business. Thanks.

Wow. A condescending clymer. Even better. Ok, here goes.....

I work for The Brickman Group. We are a 300 million dollar landscape maintenance company based out of Langhorne, PA. We are (and this will give you Mexican-haters fits) 85-90% Hispanic. Why? Because Hispanics are family-oriented, religious, honest, and hard-working - more than I can say for most of my local applicants (and I dare say a stretch for most of my "native" countrymen). How do we know they are legal? If you'd do a bit of research, you'd know that it is possible to scan the database of SS# for dead/fraudulent/etc numbers. To combat the very few who may be able to defraud all systems, we send an advance team from EACH BRANCH to personally conduct interviews and ensure that paperwork is completed to the letter. There are also companies who do a lot of this legwork for you, as part of an agricultural visa which is becoming more and more popular, called the H2B Visa.

I do know a lot of people in IN that employ Hispanics. Do I know ALL of them? Of course not. But if this is your huge trump of my post, you've got a long way to go. The rest of your reply is just "blowin smoke".

And the fact that you are crying "race card" to a fellow member of this forum is perhaps the most laughable of this whole exchange. We need a consulate here in Indy due to the fact that Indiana has an EXTREMELY low unemployment rate, and thusly we need our immigrant workers to keep this town moving efficiently. Of course they are inclined to represent the Mexican Immigrant, just like I hope you would expect an American consulate abroad to do the same for you.

Finally, is my personal conflict due to the fact that I speak from personal experience? So would I have more credibility if I made emotional, knee-jerk statements, and then insulted others when I felt challenged?

Seems to work for others here.........

If you'd do a bit of research, you'd know that it is possible to scan the database of SS# for dead/fraudulent/etc numbers.

And when most of Indiana employers work so hard to uncover this fraud, and scan the database, what information does it return? What if the individuals name and other stats using a social security number, matches the number? What if the number has not been reported as "dead"? And if one does uncover a bad number, is the subject arrested? Deported? What do all the employers in Indiana do in this case, besides doc the number into the system?

Also please understand, that a driver's license is a key document for establishing false identity for obtaining documents fraudulently, for obtaining government assistance to which illegal aliens and noncitizen legal immigrants are not entitled; and for voting, fraudulently, by noncitizens.

For illegal aliens, a driver's license or state ID card is the major ticket to document fraud, welfare fraud, and voter fraud -- by people who have proven by their very presence here that they have no respect for our laws or rules.

Social Security numbers fraud is so painfully common, that the Social Security Administration has said it would cost up to 8 billion USD to develop and implement a card that is *almost* tamper proof. The fraud is raining down on your confused head.

We need a FOREIGN consulate here in Indy due to the fact that Indiana has an EXTREMELY low unemployment rate, and thusly we need our immigrant workers to keep this town moving efficiently.

LOL! Thanks for that, like I stated, you obviously have conflict of interest in this game. This much is very clear.

The Brickman Group. We are a 300 million dollar landscape maintenance company based out of Langhorne, PA.

And thanks for that information. I appreciate it.

The Mexican government wants us to extend our idiotic socialist government programs to their citizens, the French government doesn't want us to execute OUR OWN citizens. Both are pretty f'd up

To put thing in perspective, compared to this invasion of literally millions from Mexico and South America, and and the demands from Mexico's dictators, the French government is no threat at all. They are a small joke compared to this ever escalating titanic immigration crisis. Just no comparison whatsoever.....Comments about French demands, should be restricted to late night, comedy talk shows.

Excuse me. I meant MEXICAN consulate. Once again, you're grasping at unimportant details to try and be offensive. And I must say it's working.

You're not even trying to be objective, and again I'll point out that you aren't even reading entire posts. Again, I'll ask you - What is my conflict of interest here? Experience? Or the lack of rude behavior? Raining down on my confused head? Thanks for my employer's info? It's becoming rapidly apparent to me (and probably anyone else who reads this) that you are not only a Clymer, but apparently a bully as well in your "highly intellectual" corner of the word. Well I'll tell you two things:

1. I know my company, and am confident in our procedures, if not those of the INS.

2. We hillbillies in Indiana don't respond well to threats.

Feel free to post again to me when you have something of value - I won't ask that of you for all posts, as it would effectively tie your hands. Until then, don't bother.

Please. Now all of the sudden I'm the one who doesn't play well with others. Ok, I'll indulge you, Mr. Hey everyone! I'm a very important fraud investigator!

I ask you a question and you respond with an answer, and now you call this a threat?

If you felt the question was of a threatening nature, why did you answer it?

Except the French are telling us how to handle our own people, much more of an overstepping of etiquette. Oh, and Fox is a president, not a dictator. Get over yourself.

You still comparing the negative effects France has on the United States with Mexico? LOL! Thanks for the laugh!

Yes, Fox is the Presidente of one of the most corrupt nations on Earth. The corruption and fraud in Mexico is beyond belief. Most don't have a clue.

Gee I wish I was suprised at your ability to amuse yourself. No that's not the comparison I was making, nowhere in that subdiscussion did I ever refer to any "negative impact". It's simply discussing foreign governments over stepping their bound. If you really thought I was discussing effects I recommend you find yourself a Mexican immigrant right away... so he can teach you English.

Teach him English. Why English?

English is just another one of the immigrant languages around when this nation was formed. It became the dominent language over time but that is probably due more from commerce then anything else...it sure wasn't prescribed by the Constitution or Bill of Rights.

Considering his fear you would help him out more by teaching him a little Spanish which could soon become the dominent language wherever he lives. Which, at least Constitutionally, would be just as "American" as any other immigrant language...such as English.

The wife and I had a great meal at this little place yesterday that seems to cater mostly to "Hispanic" peoples. They're "English" isn't that good but I have no strong affection for England so I'm not offended. Anyway, the food was fantastic, the prices great and the people friendly.

I hope you had a pleasant weekend as well.

He should learn English because that's what I type in, it would make communication easier. Of course, according to the people that eat stinky cheese French is the only civilized language and what we should all speak. Ah gotta love those French, they know how everybody should do everything; and they're always so disappointed in America what with our low taxes, death penalty and strong military, we're simply a second class nation. Just ask them.

Great weekend here, nothing interesting happened, that's how I like it.

Ah yes, the French.

I was fortunate to have been in Belgium a couple of times and thought how strange it was. They all sounded French but were polite and friendly.
