Mexican Consulate Opens In Downtown Indianapolis. (Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish)
WISHTV 8 ^ | 11-2-02

The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.

You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.

"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.

The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.

Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.

"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.

The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.

"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.

The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

As someone in the next big state to be "Californiaized" into permanent DNC territory, you will no doubt enjoy the results of Bush blowing this last window of opportunity to do something about our insane immigration laws and practices.

Well you have convinced me. TANCREDO FOR PRESIDENT.

This is uncanny, "I didn't realize..."

Joe made the same confession earlier tonight. He has a difficult time with realization also. So this impediment is common with you folks?

That explains a lot.

It's okay...they aren't all evil.

More straw Chief?

Of course they're not all evil. No one with any sense maintains that they are.

What can reasonably be said, however, is that massive, uncontrolled migration from countries such as Mexico is not a good thing - and its negative impact upon schools is just one of the more well-established signs that it isn't.

I'm sorry if dealing with issues isn't as much fun as clapping ones hands like a seal for some rose-colored-glasses article or for Dubya's pander amnesties - or as fun as sneering at the "upstart" Congressman.

Of course the usual crowd of anti-Mexicans that circle jerk on these threads will never get that. They require an enemy and anything that takes that enemy away must be wrong.

Mexican citizens who are in the U.S. legally are more than welcome. Mexican citizens who are in the U.S. illegally are not welcome. So yes, I am anti-Mexican illegal aliens. I am also anti-British illegal aliens, anti-Japanese illegal aliens, anti-Nigerian illegal aliens, etc.

"More straw Chief?"

Sure, the Vietnamese are responsible for our storm drain problems...we never had them before they were here.

"Of course they're not all evil. No one with any sense maintains that they are."

Do yourself a favor, don't interject the word sense into a thread where you and your friends find it impossible to accept that the Hispanics have had a positive impact on their community in Indianapolis...remember that one minor nagging detail, this thread is about Indianapolis.

"What can reasonably be said, however, is that massive, uncontrolled migration from countries such as Mexico is not a good thing - and its negative impact upon schools is just one of the more well-established signs that it isn't."

Did I mention that this thread is about Indianapolis? Oh right, we don't want to discuss that, we need to turn this into another Mexican immigrants bashing thread. However, if you do take the time to examine Irish immigration, particularly during the famine years, you will find that is was massive and unrestricted (which served the same purpose as uncontrolled). Guess what, the very same arguments were made about those third world Irish.

"I'm sorry if dealing with issues isn't as much fun as clapping ones hands like a seal for some rose-colored-glasses article or for Dubya's pander amnesties - or as fun as sneering at the "upstart" Congressman."

I don't know, perhaps I'll give it a try one day. It does sound so much more fun then the blame it all on Pedro method you're working under.

On the flip side, I enjoy this strictly for it's entertainment value. Sometimes my sides start hurting from laughing but they never aggrevate me.

LOL! I feel the same way about your posts on this thread! Keep them coming, I need the laughs!

"Mexican citizens who are in the U.S. legally are more than welcome. Mexican citizens who are in the U.S. illegally are not welcome."

Finally, a man of reason.

I believe very few people actually support illegal immigrants, unfortunately these threads all to often lump legal immigrants/residents in with illegals.

Hmmm...now how would you know anything about this?

"Hmmm...now how would you know anything about this?"

Is that the best you can do? Oh, brother you aren't even worth the effort...and you call yourself one of the second string?

Look, you're susposed to complain that sunspots are caused by unchecked illegal immigration...or that someone's calling you a racists when they're just calling you a moron. But:

"Hmmm...now how would you know anything about this?"

Lame.

Did I mention that this thread is about Indianapolis?

All to many times, though I'm not sure I feel governed by your thread-policing wishes. BTW, one nagging detail: the Indianapolis article mentions changes, but cites no improvement or positive impacts - unless you count the establishment of two Spanish-languge publications.

The biggest of many differences between the Irish immigration wave and the current influx: The Irish wave ended. The current influx has no end in sight.

Spoken like a truly ignorant person completely lacking in any and all clue. Thanks for proving me right AGAIN.

So even when you're wrong, you think you're right? That's a great system you've got going there, pal!
