Mexican Consulate Opens In Downtown Indianapolis. (Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish)

The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.

You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.

"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.

The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.

Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.

"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.

The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.

"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.

The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

...and all Hispanics must be illegal

Irrelevant - Legal or illegal, the damage is nearly the same. "Legal" immigrants are migrants with legal relatives who can "petition" for them. Illegals are migrants without such relatives. There isn't much difference in the impact of the two groups on our country.

Oh, what does this article say about the Hispanic influence on the schools in Indianapolis or do we just assume it has a negative influence because that supports a particular bias?

Look at Joe's comment following your post: "If they are in Indiana they are." He automatically states that Krogers is hiring illegals.

Let's see, illegals have been found working in our courts, our security at our major airports all over the country, in our flight schools, running for public offices, voting in our elections, working at nuclear plants, but no way can they be employed at Krogers retail stores!!

LOL! I knew you were naive, but I didn't know how naive!

Gave up trying to prove the Mexican government was sending immigrants already Fitzy? For somebody obsessed you don't have much follow through.

Never gonna catch me saying anything good about welfare. I don't care who's getting the checks. Let's keep in mind who put the welfare system in place though.

Can't blame them for us being suckers.

Collectivism is certainly suckerism but that doesnt mean it is acceptable to have illegals coming in and taking advantage of these situations illegally. I blame our govt of course much more than the immigrants.

They also take advantage of our society as well. For instance an American citizen cant do much of the work that they do tax free without a license and then take their money back to Mexico.

It's a nickname, a term of endearment, trying to keep things friendly. Like calling somebody Johnny or Bobby or Jimmy. You get uptight when you can't prove your assertions, a shrink could get rich off that problem.

Mexican government was sending immigrants already

Then why was that government preparing the little travel kits (the ones with water, granola bars and condoms)?

Which automatically means Krogers is hiring illegals?

You just don't be able to accept that Hispanics can be successful in this country, that they can have a positive impart on a neighborhood and that many of them are here legally and working legally. Automatically there has to be something illegal about it...or perhaps you're a narrow minded person.

Correct. It supports a bias for recognizing reality and for not embracing some multi-cultural leftist spin. The schools of the areas I'm quite familiar with, Los Angeles and the Metro Washington DC area have suffered significantly from a high influx of Mexican and Central American migrant pupils.

Nice to see, however, that you're following open-borders SOP and labeling anyone disagreeing with you a "Racist".

You're focused on the illegals, this is good, they're a problem, they're illegal. There are others on this thread who's position is similar who don't limit it down to illegals. These are people who think Mexico is unworthy of putting consulates or embassies ANYWHERE. Those are perfectly legal diplomatic missions, America has hundreds maybe even thousands of them all over the world in some pretty oddball corners (I provided a link earlier, check out Pakistan), and certainly we don't see a problem with that. And the rare nation that sees these consulates as an invasion is generally mocked.

The issues of illegal immigrants and legal immigrants aren't NEARLY as mixed as a lot of people try to cast it. Defense of one is not defense of the other, attacks that make no distinction are what I'm fighting against.

Prove they were and I'll answer the question, until then it's just another one of your wild groundless assertions.

"Correct. It supports a bias for recognizing reality and for not embracing some multi-cultural leftist spin."

Actually it just demonstrates a closed mind, very narrow perspective and and over inflated ego.

"The schools of the areas I'm quite familiar with, Los Angeles and the Metro Washington DC area have suffered significantly from a high influx of Mexican and Central American migrant pupils."

That's terrible...but how does that apply to the schools in Indianapolis? This whole thread is about a the success of a Hispanic community in Indianaoplis, not DC. Granted, in hind sight picking this as an example to decry all things Hispanic was probably a poor choice...we wouldn't want people to know that they can actually be good, productive members of a community and actually improve the neighborhood...that might harm our narrow reality.

"Nice to see, however, that you're following open-borders SOP and labeling anyone disagreeing with you a "Racist"."

I wondered how long it would take for one of you to pull this one out of the hat. Did you learn this victim thing from Daschle. Quick Joe, call an Admin Moderator I've hurt someone elses feelings.

Look, if you wish to consider your narrow minded views racist that is your priviledge. I don't necessarily consider you a racist.

I'm too tired to put more effort into that.

Another lesson to look at.

Notice how RogerD worked in the word Racist. They're getting desparate when they use this.

"Hey, Admin Moderator, look...this person's calling me a racist!"

This one never fails to get a good chuckle from me.

I cannot wait until Mr. Bush waves the Amnesty-wand over all the illegals' heads. Then all migrants here will then be legal - and the burdens facing our schools, hospitals, courts, jails and neighborhoods will simply vanish.
