The rules change like the wind around here.

I've been here as long as anyone.

Seems to me it's pretty consistent.

I lurked on FR for several years before lightly jumping in 2 years ago. In concept, there is nothing like FR on the planet, and I have you to thank. I am always amazed at the quality of the analysis, depth of conviction and plain fun that freepers are masters at. I can't get through a session of reading posts without "rolling on the floor" and laughing constantly. If Jay Leno were to jump in, he'd barely qualify as average! Thank you for the great service you're doing for your country.

LP is a small site where a tiny group of anti-Freepers hang out.

You might want to amend that statement. I post there and here. Am I an anti-Freeper then, too?

Way to go!!!

Why are the anti-everything crowd so put out about FR? They do have any number of the other sites where they have ever so much more fun because they can use bad language, fight, spit, battle, sling insults and mud. Seems they would be thrilled as they are getting exactly what they want.

Why is it so horrible to like this president and want to put the democrats out of power? Is it because their biggest joy is in trying to intimidate Bush supporters?

It won't work. We like Bush, we trust Bush and we want to help turn this country around. We have as much right to do that as they do to hate America, hate Bush, hate the government, and love causing any manner of dissension.

Here's what happens to 'whistle-blowers' in the U.S. Customs Dept., MO1.

Customs whistleblower sues treasury secretary

This agent shared info with the DEA that led to a huge cocaine smuggling bust and was prevented from reporting an illegal alien that she caught with $30,000, taped to his belly, to security for the airline he worked for. It was the second time this illegal alien had been caught doing the same thing!

She hasn't worked since. Would you 'blow the whistle'?

Thanks for a good job. We do not need to have lunatics here. It is a free country, they can go somewhere else.
Free Republic is the best!

What do they mean - that there are no lunatics on this site?

I am insulted.
I am outraged.

Conaf is where the anti freepers hang out( they hate LP too ,bad people) LP has its fair share of banned freepers but I wouldn't describe it as an anti freeper site. A lot of the anti freepers get banned because they are real real a******( and its hard to get banned from LP unless you try really hard at it).

Mornin' Mo,

From the article/letter to editor:

"Matt Drudge then dropped Free Republic’s link from the Drudge Report, and Goldberg took 2.000 members with her to start her own Lucianne.com."

I notice the author left out the mass exodus from Lucianne to Free Republic of you people/now freeople in June 2001.

Hope you have a great day!

What a great article! Thanks for posting. It's always good when they're talking about you.

It's disconcerting reading most of these responses. They don't correlate with the fact that this article speaks well of our site.

I consider you an asset to this site and am pleased to see you posting again.

Carry on Marine!

In 1996, Fresno, California, resident and internet surfer Jim Robinson had a problem: His posts on Prodigy message hoards and chat rooms, particularly his strong criticisms of President Bill Clinton, were being censored by Prodigy's administrators.

Ah! YESSS!!!

Those were the days, with the likes of posters like Missy Kelly, Karen Bixman (of UN National Park grabbing fame), Sydonia Dove, and even British journalists like Ambrose Evans-Pritchard.

Alas, all good things come to an end, eventually...my ersatz access via a 286 clone running DOS on Prodigy among them. The EGA Monitor gave up the Ghost the VERY DAY Drudge did the Siren thing with an obscure intern named Monica.

Still, 40 Reams of printouts (I didn't have access to Mass Storage then) fully documented OKC (American Reichstag), WACO, FBI files, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.

And, now we have Little Tommy Daschle complaining that, in essence, the mean Prodigy cum Freepers are beginning to learn how to play Football...

The title of this thread is incredibly misleading. Free Republic is occassionally mentioned in articles and I always enjoy reading about it in the mainstream. Yet the posted material is in actuality an piece written entirely about Free Republic. I'm curious as to why you chose to highlight it in this manner.

I went over to the Chronicles Magazine web site and took a look around. I'm guessing that this article is from the December 2002 issue.

Most magazines do not web publish their articles until a month after the print edition is mailed out. And many do not put all their articles on their website even then. After all, why would the subscribers buy the cow if the milk is free?

So my guess is that if they put it on the web site at all, it won't be until January.

Just read through the hundred and fifty or so comments on your post from Chronicles. Interesting to read, and somewhat disconcerting, as it shows that some of those on the Right have no qualms using the attack techniques of the Left when they read something they don't like.

For those unaware of Chronicles, you might edify yourself by subscribing, as it's one of the finest cultural and political magazines around. Moreover, if you knew the magazine then you'd also know that the Scallon article was not a "Letter to the Editor"--each month Chronicles runs a few short bits after its correspondence section on a variety of topics.

The personal attacks on Marine Inspector based on his purported agenda, his past crimes and misdemeanors, etc. are also a hallmark of the Left. Now, I don't know MI from a hole in the wall, and I don't care. But even if he was a screaming idiot, that has precious little to do with the merits of the Chronicles post.

Finally, the criticisms of FreeRepublic in the Chronicles piece are muted at best. Why does even the slightest criticism of JimRob or FreeRepublic result in such dramatic and heated flaming? Thin-skinned overreactions are what THEY do best--the Hillarys, the Jesses, the NOWs. It's a mystery when one sees us doing it amongst ourselves.

Thank You, Jim ... for being a beacon and a rock amidst all the shifting media sand dunes.

Given that the choice was between a fast-growing Big Brother government run by Bush & Co., and a fast-growing Big Brother government run by Gore/Clinton & Co., I have no trouble regarding the outcome as a huge victory.

I think most of us on FR would like to see a smaller, less intrusive government than the Republicans currently promote, but we also recognize that it wasn't possible to achieve that in this election cycle. The best we can do is gradually keep moving the arguments between the parties further and further in the right direction. That has been accomplished for this election cycle; now we have to get to work and push it further in the next one.

No, you wrote it in an ambiguous fashion. How Clintonian of you.

Sorry, you don't get off that easily. The "blatant lie" could not be produced, so now you change it around to being ambiguous and implied. You're wrong. It's ok. You can admit it. It won't hurt.

I see. Even though it was a letter in the Correspondence section it wasn't just a letter, it was a special letter.

The original poster called it an article.
