In a move that feels less like a corporate transaction and more like the final punchline to a 40-year industry rivalry, AMD announced Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire Intel, the company it has spent decades chasing, imitating, undercutting, suing, licensing from, and lately outperforming.
The all-stock transaction, which AMD described as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity to unify x86 innovation," would combine the two companies under a single umbrella just a few years after such an outcome would have sounded ridiculous.
For most of modern computing history, Intel was the empire and AMD the scrappy survivor, the perpetual second source that somehow kept finding ways to stay alive. Now, after a bruising run of manufacturing delays, product stumbles, strategic resets, and a historic reversal in investor confidence, Intel is poised to be absorbed by the smaller company it long treated as a footnote.
If completed, the acquisition would instantly create the most awkward family reunion in semiconductor history.

Almost stung by April 1.
AMD doesn’t have the cash even if it was true.
It would also create a bunch of anti trust issues.
This is why Intel couldn’t buy AMD back in the 90’s.

No, ME was junk. The best MS operating system ever was XP. I’d be happy to install it on all my computers if they’d make me a decent deal on some licenses.

Next, NVIDIA will buy AMD.
XP and 7 were the best, and I even had XP on a computer up until early last year when I finally had it recycled. But I still got the software if I should ever come across a PC I could install it on, Office 2003 too!
The Intel employee newsletter used to do an April Fools edition.
Microsoft had the weekly MicroNews which also did the april fools edition
I remember in 99 or 2000 they announced a cuneiform -Hieroglyph language pack for Windows. (and as a bonus they actually made one) I think I have a copy somewhere but I have not seen it in 25 years
I pushed it out to all the test machines in my org just to annoy the testers

April Fools’ Day joke released at Microsoft on April 1, 2000.
To coincide with the official launch of the Windows 2000 Multi-Language Version (MUI) in early 2000, Microsoft developers created a functional but parody “Ancient Scripts” Language Pack.

The Joke: Internally, Microsoft released a “Language Interface Pack” that supposedly allowed Windows 2000 to be “translated” entirely into Sumero-Akkadian Cuneiform and Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
The Technical Reality: While it was a prank, it was technically impressive. Developers used the then-new Uniscribe engine and the Private Use Area (PUA) of Unicode to map system text—like “Start,” “My Computer,” and menu items—to these ancient symbols.
Why it worked: Windows 2000 was the first version of Windows built from the ground up on Unicode. The “Cuneiform pack” served as a “stress test” (and a humorous demonstration) of how the OS could now theoretically support any script on Earth, even dead ones.
Lasting Legacy
Though the internal prank version was never made public, the work done to support those characters wasn’t lost.
Unicode Standards: The font mapping and rendering research contributed to the eventual formal inclusion of Cuneiform and Hieroglyphs in the Unicode Standard.
Modern Inclusion: This lineage eventually led to the creation of the Segoe UI Historic font, which remains a standard part of Windows today and includes the very glyphs used in that original internal release.

This monopoly needs to be stopped. It will be very bad for the country in many ways.
