The SWAT response and shelter-in-place order in Lake in the Hills Thursday morning was due to a search warrant on a 20-year-old man allegedly possessing 38 rounds of pistol and rifle ammunition without a FOID card.
Joel Fernandez, 20, was arrested without incident at his residence in the 1400 block of Clayton Marsh Drive in Lake in the Hills and was charged with four counts of possessing ammunition without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card, a Class A misdemeanor.
At around 9:50 a.m. Thursday, the Lake in the Hills Police Department – assisted by the Carpentersville Police Department and the McHenry County Sheriff’s multijurisdictional SWAT team – executed a search warrant at Fernandez’s residence.
“The search warrant was part of a joint investigation into illegal activity,” the Lake in the Hills Police Department said in a news release.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges that Fernandez knowingly possessed – without a valid FOID card – 20 cartridges of .45 Auto Sellier & Bellot branded full metal jacket (FMJ), 13 cartridges of .223 Remington branded steel core FMJ, one cartridge of 9mm Blazer Brass branded FMJ, one cartridge of 9mm Remington-Peters branded FMJ, one cartridge of 9mm Speer branded jacketed hollow point (JHP), and two cartridges of 9mm Sig Sauer branded JHP.
This means that Fernandez was allegedly possessing 25 cartridges of pistol ammunition and 13 cartridges of rifle ammunition, totaling 38.

If it’s Illinois, law enfarcement is illegitimate.
This is what you call tyranny and the coppers love it.
If you’re a raping, murdering illegal in Illinois, IT’S ALL GOOD.
I thought it was Canada but the news site says it’s Illinois. Wow.
The answer would be to send it certified mail, return receipt requested.
It is illegal to hold ammo in Illinois without a permit?
Living in a free state has lots of advantages.
Same sort of thing happened in DC when during a traffic stop cops searched the trunk of the car and found a few shotgun rounds. No shotgun in car, just a couple of rounds rolling around in there. Ammo is outlawed in DC I’m told.
Yeah, I think I've got more than that in the bowl of live rounds I picked up off the ground at the range...
;^)
2a.1 The right to infringe shall not be limited.
“””I would have arrested him for not having enough ammo. Pathetic.”””
I would have arrested him for that haircut...and whoever did it.
Illinois.
All that over 25 pieces as described? The wieners on the SWAT team should have been thinking, I hope my dad doesn’t hear about this. 25 pieces.
And to think of the several thousand rounds of assorted ammo I have and many other Freepers have, all of us in free Staates like TN amd FL. Then throw in the cool toys that are used to shoot them.
In MD they harassed a conceal carry guy from another state driving through. He didn’t have a gun but were able to figure out from his plate or DL that he had a conceal carry permit. They thought he would have one. There are states I avoid and limit my purchases from. Ditto countries.
(38 rounds of pistol)
Okay, avoid Illinois...
For some reason, I don't even want to visit blue states anymore...
;^)
2nd Amendment is not valid in IL (and CA, MA, NY, NJ, MD, CT, RI, DE, HI, etc ) these states feel that they are only optionally in the USA and can choose what parts of the constitution apply to their citizens. This also illustrates that the police ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. No matter where the government is whether in North Korea, Nazi Illinois*, Cambodia, etc there will always be plenty of people willing to deny you your rights, arrest you, or kill you ad long as someone in the government says to do it.
*I hate Illinois Nazis
I’m surprised they didn’t add more weight to the charges by stating that it was LIVE ammunition...
Time to dust off the ‘74 Monaco.
38 rounds of ammo? I’m surprised they didn’t call it a cache.
If that’s all I had left I’d call it a dire emergency.
And that’s if that’s all I had for ONE caliber.
