John Mellencamp has no interest in being a "(Expletive) clown" for his fans.
During an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the singer explained why he recoiled from playing arena and amphitheater-sized shows in recent years.
“I got tired of going on tour and being a cheerleader, which is what I was,” Mellencamp admitted. “’Let's do a rounding hit of 'Small Town!' ‘I was born…’ You know, and everybody’d stand up and sing. I was playing to 20,000 people and everybody was drunk and I was just kind of the cheerleader.”
“I just thought, I'm here to be a musician," he continued. "This is not being a musician. This is being a (Expletive) clown. I don't want to be a clown.”
As a result, the rocker decided to change his venue types, hoping for a more intimate experience. “I started playing in theaters,” he explained, “which pissed everybody off.”
Mellencamp previously said that he wanted the theater shows to be regarded more like Broadway performances than rock concerts. Yet even after scaling things down, the singer encountered an atmosphere that wasn’t to his liking. In 2023 he told an audience to “shut the (Expletive)” up and threatened to end his show early. A year later, he called one heckler a “(Expletive),” before telling fans weeks later, “if you want to come and scream and yell and get drunk, don’t come to my show.”
Is John Mellencamp Touring in 2026?
Mellencamp recently announced his 2026 summer tour, which promises nightly set lists loaded with his biggest hits. Unlike the aforementioned theater runs, these shows will be in larger outdoor venues -- so it’s possible the singer’s strict rules regarding audience etiquette will be relaxed.
Concerts are currently scheduled to begin July 10 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and conclude Aug. 12 in Mountain View, California. Mellencamp is also reportedly prepping a new album titled Orphan Train, due out later this year.
We saw them at Symphony Hall at the Atlanta Arts Center. We had never seen Isaak before. Lyle we’d seen a year or two ago on the main stage at the 30A Songwriters Festival. We’re leaving tomorrow to go to this year’s. And we saw him maybe 25 years ago at Chastain Amphitheater in N. ATL.
John, shut up and ...., just shut up.
I first saw Lyle Lovett about twenty years ago... by accident. He was the opener for Bonnie Raitt (we had gone mainly to see Raitt) and quite frankly totally outshone Raitt. I was hooked. Have seen him four times since .... He’s an incredible musician.
MELLON WHO??
Oh, yeah, life goes onnnnn
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone
You got PAID for signing such crap, John.
Wait. You mean he’s not Johann Cougar Mein Kampf?
Whining because he was the head clown? Mediocre washed up entertainers are never satisfied.
He’s a douchebag a-hole that drinks white wine during cry sessions with Bruce Springsteen.
The Byrds.
Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones used to be in a British band called The Birds.
Fame goes on, long after the thrill of being famous is gone.
I never much liked any of his songs anyway.
Had me wondering????
I never was a fan but I always thought he was a clown.
I’ve lost track. That could be his name now.
“The dude who named himself “Cougar”.”
” John Mellencamp was named “Johnny Cougar” by his first manager, Tony DeFries, who thought the name Mellencamp was too hard to market and wanted something “hot and wild” for a rock star, though Mellencamp strongly disliked it, and was only forced to use the name to get his debut album released. The name evolved through “John Cougar” and “John Cougar Mellencamp” before he eventually dropped the “Cougar” part to return to his birth name. “
No Mellencamp fan but I did watch the Rogan show today out of curiosity . He came across as a decent enough fellow . Said he disliked all politicians regardless of party . Quit alcohol and drugs many years ago , but still smokes cigs . Even mentioned God once or twice .
He’s like a federal employee complaining about his pension

John, you don't have to fill out a TPS report, but you have to sing Small Town. It's the same thing.
If you want to play in a 2000 seat theatre playing stuff from your "new album", so be it. Say that is what you are doing. Weird Al did that a couple years ago. He did a tour and was up front and said, "This concert will have none of my hits." People went, and had a good time in the smaller venues.
