John Mellencamp has no interest in being a "(Expletive) clown" for his fans.
During an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the singer explained why he recoiled from playing arena and amphitheater-sized shows in recent years.
“I got tired of going on tour and being a cheerleader, which is what I was,” Mellencamp admitted. “’Let's do a rounding hit of 'Small Town!' ‘I was born…’ You know, and everybody’d stand up and sing. I was playing to 20,000 people and everybody was drunk and I was just kind of the cheerleader.”
“I just thought, I'm here to be a musician," he continued. "This is not being a musician. This is being a (Expletive) clown. I don't want to be a clown.”
As a result, the rocker decided to change his venue types, hoping for a more intimate experience. “I started playing in theaters,” he explained, “which pissed everybody off.”
Mellencamp previously said that he wanted the theater shows to be regarded more like Broadway performances than rock concerts. Yet even after scaling things down, the singer encountered an atmosphere that wasn’t to his liking. In 2023 he told an audience to “shut the (Expletive)” up and threatened to end his show early. A year later, he called one heckler a “(Expletive),” before telling fans weeks later, “if you want to come and scream and yell and get drunk, don’t come to my show.”
Is John Mellencamp Touring in 2026?
Mellencamp recently announced his 2026 summer tour, which promises nightly set lists loaded with his biggest hits. Unlike the aforementioned theater runs, these shows will be in larger outdoor venues -- so it’s possible the singer’s strict rules regarding audience etiquette will be relaxed.
Concerts are currently scheduled to begin July 10 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and conclude Aug. 12 in Mountain View, California. Mellencamp is also reportedly prepping a new album titled Orphan Train, due out later this year.
We may have seen that tour. 3-4 years ago?
Good stuff.
Hey John Melonhead; Dylan is still touring. But he has talent.
I would have to be falling down drunk to attend a John Mellencamp concert.
The dude who named himself “Cougar”.
The Beatles gave up performing live because no one could hear them over the fans screaming, including themselves. Steely Dan gave up performing in the ‘70s and pretty much became a studio duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker with the best session musicians in the country. I can’t blame Mellencamp - it takes some integrity to give up live performances, because that’s where the money is for old-time acts.
An ungrateful douche bag, if there ever was one
What an a-hole.
The Pink Houses in the 70s should have been a dead give away about John the Libtard Cougar Mello crap.
Do what you’re famous for.
Or don’t.
Either way, stop whining.
Dribble, Clown.
So, basically, people quit coming to see him and he’s a cranky old dick.
My first visual experience was seeing him on SNL. I thought “This dude is doing a Mick Jagger imitation.” He was overly acting the fool. So, yes, John you presented yourself as a clown and that’s how people react to it.
That said, I am a fan of his music. Bought many of his records and Scarecrow is probably one of the top 3-4 LPs of the 1980s.
His liberal ravings are those of a self-important overly dramatic artistic temperament. Which is exactly what he is. And now he probably just needs some $$. So there you go.
Good for him. He’s worth 200 million or so, and wants to do some better quality music. I wish him well.
It sounds like he wants smaller theater appearances so he can lecture people on the evils of America and Trump for two hours in between a song or two.
He’s worth around 200 million and he’s 74 years old. He isn’t chasing money now.
I have more respect for his approach than the ones who are 75 or 80 trying to pretend everything is the same. The recent David Lee Roth tour is an example of that. And more respect for his approach than the Eagles becoming a Las Vegas act with outrageous prices.
Horses for courses.
So is he going to be a stay at home clown now?
Yeah, if he wants to change the show, he needs to write new songs that people want to hear.
Yeah. His 30 million should help his sadness.
I’ve seen Lovett and Isaak twice ... at Wolf Trap. Yes I think the most recent was three-four years ago.
