Mother-of-four is handcuffed in front of her children and hauled to jail for letting 11-year-old son walk less than a mile into town where just 370 people live

A mother-of-four was handcuffed in front of her children and hauled off to jail after she allowed her 11-year-old son to walk less than a mile into a small town.

Brittany Patterson went to drive her eldest son to a medical appointment on October 30, 11-year-old Soren, was supposed to tag along - but was not around when it was time to leave

She had figured he was simply playing in the woods or visiting his grandmother, Patterson told the outlet, noting that her father lives with them and her mother and sisters live just two minutes away.

But it turned out Soren decided to walk to downtown Mineral Bluff, a town of just 370 people that is less than a mile from their home.

He was spotted alongside the road by a woman who asked if he was OK, and even though he replied that he was, the woman called police

A female sheriff's deputy then picked up the boy, and called Patterson.

'I know the roads and know he is mature enough to walk there without incident,' Patterson said of the street that has a speed limit of up to 35mph.

The deputy, however, 'kept mentioning how he could have been run over, or kidnapped or "anything" could have happened,'

The deputy ultimately drove Soren home and left him with his grandfather.

around 6.30pm that night, the deputy showed up with another officer, handcuffed Patterson and brought her to jail, where she was fingerprinted, had her mugshot taken and was put in prison garb, according to an online fundraiser set up for her legal bills.

She said she did not understand what was happening, as she had grown up in the area with unsupervised time to wander and play, and was raising her children that way as well.

RM80 bump. I was usually on YZs then. Friend had RM400 which seemed like King Kong to me. About the helmet, tho, I did go for one single ride without it. Paid for that with three weeks in the hospital. They were real cautious about concussions especially prior to brain imaging. No memory of the accident but no lasting effects I’m aware of.

That kid is big enough to be able to take care of himself.

At the very least, he’s probably in great shape and could outrun any troublemaker.

I live in Mineral Bluff. The town has no police force. It’s patrolled by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department. Mostly a bunch of idiots - good for manning the metal detector at the county courthouse and that’s about it. Color is not an issue at all. We are a very non-diverse area.

I mean think of the neighbors.

The social pressure on my parents was intense. Imagine my poor dad being passed over by the the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows for membership.

I was riding the Number 61 bus in Baltimore about 12 years ago.

There were a number of fairly young black girls in it.

When the bus got to the Roland Park School, the little girls got off.

There was a special school kids bus fare in Baltimore in the mid-1970s and for at least 30 years afterward.

Why does a town of 370 need a police force?

“We are evolving with technology and providing our students with OMNY tap-to-go passes for subway and city buses. Schools will distribute OMNY cards this Fall 2024. This will allow eligible students to get to and from school and school-related activities for free—and ride for free on weekends and all year, too!”

Wow. My mom would tell us to go out and play and come home when the street lights came on. I used to ride my bike for miles and so would my friends. She never knew where we were and wasn’t worried. Mid 60s.

We have a deputy that has no common sense.

I am thinking someone like a father or someone else in the family is behind this. Everyone in town knows everyone else. A town this small has no secrets. There is far more to this story than we are being told. A town of 200 probably has one or two policemen if any. So I am guessing this is a county thing. The local town has no judge or child protective services. I am guessing you will find that there was more than one father. And that that father lost a custody battle. And this is his way of fighting back. The mother is too good looking. She was knocked up by someone with local influence.

A non profit I will look into supporting.

I have no doubt my mother would have done the exact same thing back when I was that age.

more likely after the first incident with the buses when I decided I had better learn how to read maps and bus maps by the time I was 9 she would have just dropped me off anywhere and said be home by dinner.

of course she did do that in a foreign country. It was freezing cold and my pantlegs were frozen above my knees.

partially because I could have taken the bus but I only had a large denomination bill (large to me anyway) and I was like it is only 3 more miles to walk. later I found out that the busses in this country gave change unlike in the US
