A mother was overcome with devastation as she received a jail term for setting her daughter's rapist on fire and burning him to death after his release from prison.
Maria del Carmen Garcia couldn't bear the sight of her daughter Veronica's attacker, Antonio Cosme, after he was freed. At the tender age of 13 in 1998, Veronica suffered a brutal rape at knifepoint by Cosme, their neighbour, who was originally given a nine-year sentence.
However, during a day release in June 2005, the unrepentant predator brazenly confronted Maria at a bus stop close to her home near Alicante. Adding insult to injury, he had the cheek to ask Maria "how her daughter was".
After Cosme swaggered into a bar her family often visited, Maria, fuelled by anger and terror, bought petrol from a nearby station.
In a bid to inflict some form of justice, Maria entered the bar with the fuel, drenched Cosme in it and set him ablaze. With burns covering 90 per cent of his body, Cosme didn't survive and succumbed to his injuries days later in a hospital, reports the Mirror US.
Found disoriented around the port that evening, Maria confessed to the act. Claiming her intention was more to frighten or severely hurt him so he would understand a fraction of her daughter's pain, rather than kill.
Originally sentenced to nine-and-a-half years' imprisonment for murder, Maria's conviction was decreased to five-and-a-half years upon appeal. This sentencing sparked a national outcry in support of the anguished mother, with a groundswell of voices rallying to prevent her imprisonment.

Not sure I agree with you about not losing her life.
Do boys have to deal with trauma as a result of what happened? I'm kinda thinking they don't.
A much larger man overpowering someone and forcibly penetrating them is not the same as a young boy, eager to have an experience with a woman.
No trauma, no pain. If the boy doesn't want to participate, there is nothing a woman can do to make him do it.
Don't use false analogies.
Were jurors relatives of the deceased rapist? There was far too little evidence to warrant conviction.
Would you call his trials “fair and impartial?” How is it expected to turn out after the appeals?
Would you advocate simply opening all the prisons and turning all the inmates loose because SOME of the accused are innocent?

God didn’t have a problem with the death penalty for rape.
Not what I’m suggesting at all. False rape accusations do get made so before we go off the deep end on this, we have to make sure they are actually guilty and not being railroaded by some greedy bitch out looking to make money off a billionaire ex president.
If someone is proven to have falsely accused another of a crime they should face the same penalty the accused would have suffered if found guilty.

I am. Funny how so many people will tout abortion as the solution for baby conceived in a rape, but get squishy about giving a violent criminal equal treatment.
Abortion is the one medical procedure where the ONLY guaranteed, totally innocent person involved in the crime gets the death penalty.

I have no problem going back to having rape be a Capital Offence.
Until 1982 or so, in Canada a rapist serving a prison sentence could be sentenced to 24 lashes with the cat annually at the judges discretion. That was also deleted by the Trudeau liberals.
Deterrence has been abandoned , not a good idea.

This seems to me to qualify as a story about empowerment of victims. Providing the mother expresses regret, she deserves to be required to undergo some counseling and possibly do some community service.
