People have described being sick for weeks on end with high fevers, nausea, trouble breathing, loss of sense of smell, and fatigue.
But health experts say the virus is less mysterious than it is painted online. There are viruses circulating at all times of year, and this ‘mystery virus’ is likely one of the common seasonal illnesses that were suppressed during the Covid pandemic.
There is thought to be a two-pronged effect at play. People are hypersensitive to their own health after the pandemic, and our immune systems were weakened due to things like lockdowns and working from home, when we were not exposed to germs, making illnesses feel more brutal.
While thousands called their illness a mystery virus, their reported symptoms do not necessarily overlap. Some have likened it to a respiratory infection similar to Covid, while others have described symptoms consistent with strep throat.
Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, told The Hill: ‘The symptoms that are being described are pretty consistent with, you know, a lot of viruses that are not “mystery viruses,” that are things that are out there circulating all year. The common cold being one of them.’
One user on TikTok describing her illness said: ‘I was sick a few weeks ago for about two weeks. The first four days were absolutely terrible. I tested for Covid, I tested for both a and b flu, I tested for strep, and was negative for everything twice.
‘I had a fever, pretty much for four straight days, I was super congested, shortness of breath, loss of sense of smell. Everything you would think of whenever you have covid or the flu. I was also really dizzy and lightheaded a lot.’

People are not hypersensitive they are sick. All of my friends have been sick way more than usual this year. Something is up.
I’ve had allergy / respiratory type symptoms since middle of last year. Been sick at least twice so far. I get sick maybe once a year if that and dispense with it pretty fast.

I think it's the growing complications of the clot shots our despicable ruling class forced on nearly 85% of the American people.

I tell you what, we’ve got something happening in my area that has people stumped. It’s putting people in the hospital, and I’ve got a dose of it right now and it’s tough! I didn’t get the jab, and I missed getting the flu vaccine this year. I tested negative for covid twice, so it’s not that. I’ve had very little fever, so the doctors initially didn’t think it’s the flu. What I have is big-time head and chest congestion, and the doctor says it looks like the onset of pneumonia. This is weird because I usually don’t fall victim to upper respiratory issues. I’ve had it for 10 days now. The doctors are treating me for pneumonia, and the drugs I’m taking seem to be working. The doctor says the jury is still out how contagious it is or isn’t, because the people who are coming down with it are ones just getting over covid or the flu. So, he thinks I contracted the flu, and then this stuff set in on me. Night before last was the first time I’ve been able to sleep flat in the bed without having head congestion and coughing fits. After I get up in the morning and get active, I start feel much better, but when it comes time for bed, I almost have to sleep sitting up in a chair. Whatever this is, it’s tough!
OMG! There is a cold bug going around! In WINTER! Low grade fever and slight body aches for a day or two, stuffy head for a week or two. Most people would take a little sudafed and go on with life. The US is turning into a nation of hypochondriacs.
Sounds pretty similar to whats going around here, but yours is more severe. Hope you get well quickly. For the head congestion, pick up some real Sudafed (psuedoephedrine HCI). You have to ask for it at the pharmacy counter, and they'll probably ask for your drivers license and log the sale in a book. The legit stuff is used to make meth, so they track it. The stuff on the shelf, "Sudafed PE" doesn't work for me.
