I have a good friend whose brother hears voices. He takes medicine to stay stable. I asked him if there a was to discern whether it is you or the "voices" that are "talking" to him and if so how does he tell which. He told me that it is easy when sober to tell the difference. The difference is that the voice never gives good advise.
