US agencies sued over fate of rare Rio Grande minnow

Environmentalists on Wednesday accused the U.S. government of not doing enough to ensure the survival of the Rio Grande silvery minnow as drought tightens its grip on one of the longest rivers in the West.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court, the group WildEarth Guardians asked a judge to force the Bureau of Reclamation and the Fish and Wildlife Service to reassess the effects of water management activities on the endangered fish.

They also want federal officials to develop enforceable measures to keep dams and diversions along the river’s stretch through New Mexico’s most populated region from jeopardizing the minnow.

The tiny fish was declared endangered nearly 30 years ago and has been the subject of much litigation over the decades. The challenges have only mounted in recent years as demands on the Rio Grande have escalated due to climate change, with snowpack melting sooner and strong winds further drying thirsty soil and limiting the amount of spring runoff that reaches the river. …

Have the wetbacks pee there as they cross. Should be enough water for any minnow. Could be a flood.

The minnow is only dieing out because of the illegals swimming in the river. It is toxic. Ban the border cross swimmers, save the minnows.

All the filthy illegals crossing the Rio Grand undoubtedly polluted the water for the fish. I’d rather have the fish than them. It belongs here—they don’t.

Screw the environmentalists. The politicians have been busy making sure homosexuals and other deviants were sufficiently being protected. LGBTQ are the new Spotted Owls and Snail Darters of this millennium. Ask any RAT politician.

Panty hose over a coat hanger and I would be at the creek netting some minnows.

They were used to catch the cat fish that I would put in the horse trough.

Good times.

I guess the minnow loss was my fault.

Ooops, my wife told me the fish I’ve been bringing home for dinner were way to small even though I’ve been netting thousands of them every day.

It's a freakin' MINNOW fer cryin' out loud. There's plenty of species of minnows, and species come and go by the dozens every day.

This is just another totally obvious ploy by the envirowackos to stop business. If they had a case, they'd be arguing it based on technological or geological or similar solid merits, not based on a damn minnow.

I'm sure the minnows appreciate all the righteous concern. /s

Last scientific studies that I recall stated that most fish have an average memory of approximately three seconds. Good enough for instinct response, but not for appreciation of rhetorical things like (self-)righteous concern. And fish apparently do not feel pain; also scientific.

How can they have standing to bring this case?

Environmentalists on Wednesday accused the U.S. government of not doing enough to ensure the survival of the Rio Grande silvery minnow as drought tightens its grip on one of the longest rivers in the West.

But the "environmentalists" turn a blind eye to the aesthetic pollution, noise pollution, killing of eagles, bats, and other birds by the economically non viable wind turbines.

The EPA is selective and politically correct in its environmental protection priorities.
