College student who rented plane for date dies after walking into propeller

A Georgia college student died instantly when he walked into the still-spinning propeller of a small airplane he had rented for a dinner date, officials said.

Georgia Southern University sophomore Sani Aliyu, 21, was hit in the head twice at Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport on Sunday night after he got off a plane piloted by two friends who had taken him and a woman to nearby Savannah, according to officials and reports.

“They flew to Savannah to go on a date, flew back, landed at the Statesboro Airport, and the young lady got off the plane, and he got off the airplane and walked toward the front of the plane, and when he did, the propeller hit him,” Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch told the Statesboro Herald.

I was a medic there and was on duty when they brought in 3 fatalities from a Huey crash, an instructor and 2 student pilots. That was a ghastly sight. Autopsies had to be performed on them to determine whether they died in the air or died on impact, not sure why that mattered, but to the Army it did.

When I was in the USN, they had a guy walked into an E2 Hawkeye prop over in the Med. I heard it was pretty gory. I think it was aboard the USS America, but can’t remember what year.

On my ship (JFK) we had a guy get sucked into a Tomcat. He lived, but only because the pilot saw him get sucked in and shut down the engine immediately.

He was a quadraplegic, though. Broke his neck on the engine spinner when he hit it.

I was a jet mechanic, and saw the TF30 engine after they pulled it out of the plane. The guy’s tools had got sucked out of his tool belt and destroyed the engine. I rememeber seeing a big jagged hole where it exited through the side of the engine casing.

I understand. People get carried away. I have done it too. I try to keep in mind that this person was something to someone.

The Internet can indeed give you that 15 minutes of fame, and not in the way you might like.

Do you think the passenger ever flew in a small plane again?

Henry duPont III died that way. Somebody left the engine running, then inadvertently hit the controls as duPont was unloading luggage. Some reports had it he was struck by a propeller but as I heard it from a more reliable source, the plane started moving and duPont fell off.
Way before my time, maybe 1970’s?

Corpus Christi is where my dad was stationed. Must have been the same event. Small world.

Poor guy was probably minutes from getting an airstart from his date on the drive home. Sad.

One can drive from Statesboro to Savannah in under an hour.

It’s been a while; was that in “The Last of the Breed”?

Last of the Breed was great, too many Russian names though. Wings over Brazil was the story. Louie went to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark and when they got to that scene Louie leaned over and said “I think I wrote that scene.”

Thanks, that is one I’ve never seen/read. I’ve been reading his story’s for 60 years. Bingeing lately.
