Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas has made his position on assault weapons crystal clear. "Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47," O'Rourke said during Thursday's Democratic presidential debate. "We're not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore."
To accomplish this, O'Rourke has proposed a mandatory confiscation of these guns whereby individuals would be compensated for their firearms.
Beyond the thorny politics of this proposal, it raises clear legal and logistical questions, including whether a president has the authority to confiscate people's guns.
Facts First: A president could not issue a blanket confiscation of so-called assault weapons, but they could work with Congress to pass such a law. Constitutionally speaking, that law would likely run into some significant legal trouble.
First, some basic facts. The National Rifle Association has estimated that there are somewhere between 8.5 million and 15 million assault rifles in the US, the organization told McClatchy in 2018. That's about 2% to 4% of all the estimated guns in the US, but it's unclear how many guns would ultimately fall under an assault weapons confiscation.

Real weapons of war, albeit obsolete.
We need to start exposing what is really going on. The fact is the federal government has over a hundred different federal agencies with police power. As of 2008 there were over 120,000 Armed federal agents with police power and I'm quite sure that number has increased significantly over the last ten years. This is a number greater than the active troops of many countries entire military. The federal government currently has more armed agents than the militaries of Canada and Sweden combined. These federal agents possess the same military weapons, gear, and training that we supply our military troops. They have access to tens of thousands of machine guns, military vehicles, body armor, night vision and literally tens of millions of rounds of ammunition. Folks history tells us over and over this massive buildup of arms in a central government is almost certain to be used against it's own people. The Constitution provides for the people to be armed and for the government to establish the military but there is no, none, not any provision for the federal government to have any armed agents much less a literal private military accountable only to the bureaucracy that pays them. This is what has to be stopped. We would have little to worry about if the federal government had to rely on local police for enforcement of tyrannical laws. We must start educating the people and demand these agencies be disarmed. Any police power should be state a local only.
How big is a typical SWAT team? 8 people?
How long would one raid take? Four hours?
The logistics alone make the idea utterly ridiculous.
“He could also do things to stop manufacture of ammo.”
To what effect? The federal armories are supposedly filled with trillions of rounds.
Every soldier and policeman on Earth could not confiscate the firearms from New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Many of us might not agree on a variety of political issues with the gentlemen in the picture, but we are on the same side when it comes to the right to keep and bear arms. Maybe they will consider voting from President Trump and other freedom oriented candidates in 2020. I doubt they would like to see a President O'Rourke, or a President Buttigieg either.
120,000 Federal agents vs. 150 million armed Americans and you think they have the advantage? LOLOL
Beto has spilled the beans and not one Dem (one exception but Beto has already shouted him down) on that stage disagreed.
Could have said anything: “Uh, I don’t believe I’d go that far, Beto”; but they didn’t.
I wonder how much NICS checks & AR-15 purchases will spike in the next few days.
True.
And none of them are anxious to die. It’s also very, very likely their place of residence could be discovered and published.
The digital world works both ways.
Mrs. L. and I were at an event at a local private range today. I got to fire a 1919 Browning, a vintage BAR, AND an authentic German MG-42. All were semi-auto versions.
What fun...
Come get them Beta.

“This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...”
US Marine Corps Rifleman’s Creed...for most of us, there is NO expiration date.
He has given the Republicans the image and tagline for every ad they need to get Trump reelected. They are gun grabbers now and forever.
Red flag laws plus NRA membership lists plus shooting range membership lists plus FR membership lists. But who will do the confiscating?
Ever notice all the democraps talk about the ‘executive orders’ they’ll make but get bent out of shape when Trump signs one?

Does that matter in California? Nope, too late.
Better fact check: President O'Rourke? That's a five Pinocchio question right there!
Freeper reminder:
Beto’s very fancy VA. boarding school not only had their own golf course but also a SHOOTING RANGE and their own shooting range team.
Do I think that’s good?
Yes, but then again, *I* am not trying to take your gun away from you.
Diversity shot from Beto's high school.
I’m in agreement with you. Obama armed all the alphabet agencies, and even local authorities with so many rounds of ammo, it was difficult for civilians to purchase ammunition. Do people forget this? Didn’t Obama also equip many local authorities with armored assault vehicles?
