:)
I’m 50 and can get a decent enough paying job there and a house for about a 1/6th of what it would cost here.
And that’s Staten Island.
In terms of sq feet, in Manhattan we’re talking 1/20th the price!
The wife doesn’t want to move.
But there’s plenty of wives out there :)
(hope she doesn’t read this!!)
Direct the wife to a site such as zillow.com, to discover the bargains available in central PA. Schuylkill County, Northumberland County, Columbia County, etc. Big, beautiful homes for under $100k. You can find a solidly-built 3000sqft house with yearly taxes of around $1000, priced like a cardboard shack in Staten Island. And that’s not in the foreclosure category, or the tax sale list, where they’re even cheaper.
There’s a big old fixer-upper down the street from me, just went for around $16k; with a little paint and elbow grease, it could be selling for $160k. It’s on a street full of pretty Victorians. “For Sale By Owner” sign was gone in two weeks.
Ah, the fsbo’s! Old folks, and sometimes heirs, have houses they don’t want, or can’t afford to maintain, and they’ll happily take a few thousand in cash, or payments over a short term.
So if you want to get the wife on board, just turn her on to the house porn at zillow. ;)
