'Cheap sex' is making men give up on marriage
NY Post ^ | September 2, 2017 | Larry Getlan

Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.

The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.

Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.

Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.

The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).

In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.

Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

No. American men are giving up on marriage because the risks outweigh the benefits.

Basically American women bring noting to marriage but misery, and are rewarded with an easy on-demand divorce with endless payments from the ex-husband. That is what young American men perceive.

With that perception, why would American men risk marriage?! "Cheap sex" is just a side issue.

Sounds like she was happy where she was. Why is it the guys fault that she was “off the market” as you say?. Maybe she took him “off the market” by spreading her legs so easily and he could have met someone decent himself.

Cuts both ways doesn’t it sweetheart?

Do I sense a tad of bitterness? While these things are all true to an extent, it works both ways. I know women whose husbands walked out on them leaving them high and dry with the kids. Yes, they paid child support, but had little to do with their children otherwise, and the women found themselves suddenly struggling to make ends meet.

Besides all the other reasons for the decline of marriage and increase in divorce is the ability of women to support themselves financially. Many people stayed in unhappy marriages because they couldn’t afford divorce.

All of the reasons are sad, and there is no guarantee that a marriage will last even if both people claim to be committed to making it work. We live in disruptive times, and I’m not sure it will get better. The best shot at a successful marriage is a man and woman who are serious about their vows before God, but sometimes someone’s sinful nature wins out over that. Depending on emotions certainly isn’t sufficient.

Yeah, it is. And you get more quantity as well as quality. You also produce cute kids who give you even cuter grandkids later in life.

But when sex is widely advertised as the end and children an unfortunate result to be avoided, you get the screwed up society of liberal utopialand.

I figured from the title they wouldn’t bother with the little detail of the effect of child custody laws, family court decisions, and no-fault divorces has on men. I suspect that they figure men only learn about the above (or at least make decisions based on the above) AFTER they’ve been screwed over.

Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. Men know other men, which means they men who have been royally screwed over by women after getting married. I’ve told my boys to NEVER marry an American woman, as the odds are just massively stacked against a successful marriage.

Sex ain’t the reason. Women dressing and acting like either cheap sluts or truckers, and coming with a snotty and bratty entitlement attitude, are the prime reasons many men skip marriage.

When France was trying to populate eastern Canada, the king encouraged towns to shun men who wouldn’t settle down and marry. Unlike the English, who moved whole families over, the French had a disproportionate number of men who went for the fur trade. The French government transported prostitutes and such over to start some sort of normal society, but couldn’t get some young men to “play ball”. In the end, the English growth far surpassed the French, and the colony became indefensible.

You seem unable to grasp that an asset/liability analysis of feminist females has made those females and marriage a bad deal for a thoughtful thinking male.
What does it say about modern women when honest observation of their attitudes/morals/loyalty will be described as ‘bashing’.
You have inadvertently proved what those you describe as ‘bashers’ have said.
Well done.

>>Unlike the English, who moved whole families over, the French had a disproportionate number of men who went for the fur trade.

So, the problem was that they sent two different kinds of men.

The French sent men of adventure (who probably found native women eventually). The English sent farmers. Naturally, the farmers will be more productive because they need young farm workers. The fur trapper does not need a canoe full of kids. I’m sure the King of France knew this, but had reasons for not developing this outpost (since nation desiring a true colony would have sent farmers) fully as an actual colony.

“I have a feeling this is going to turn into the usual bash-women thread that has grown so popular on FR with all the bitter, divorced guys chiming in, lol.”

You miss the point...it’s not just people who have been screwed over, it’s the effect that they have on others who have not been screwed over. I’ve been married for over 25 years (to the same person, although opposite sex) - only marriage for either of us. The difference is that she wasn’t born in this country.

But I paid a lot of attention to men getting screwed over (even 25 years ago), so made a point to never marry an American girl...it paid off.

Others, often, are not attracted to women from countries where marriages aren’t viewed as disposable (including many of my friends), so they end up never getting married...again, because they understand the huge risks in marrying an American Woman.

No not bitter, awake and empowered in my case. Gave my entire life to my wife and responive to her needs/desires. Not enough apparently because of her entitled nature.

Abandoned me and our children. What kind of female moves 2,000 miles away from young childten? Hired a pit bull lawyer and have permanent custody. The entitlement culture that encompasses many females today is a reality.

Yet there were times as the Bible has recorded that women did assume leadership. For example Deborah. There was also Esther. Also a number of early Christian communities were lead by women.

Some states allow common law marriage-Texas is one. It is one of the reasons many older single women like myself keep residences separate from our men-we have benefits as widows that we might lose if we re-marry-it is too expensive a proposition in this economy...
