New York activist Al Sharpton offered an emotional and personal case calling for the federal government to halt funding to Washington, D.C.'s Jefferson Memorial.
Sharpton said America's third president and the author of the Declaration of Independence had several slaves.
His iconic round-roofed memorial sits on the edge of Potomac River- the first of several monuments lining Washington's Ohio Drive.
Sharpton also noted how Jefferson is said to have fathered a child with a slave named Sally Hemings.
"People need to understand that people were enslaved," Sharpton told PBS' Charlie Rose.
He said that his great-grandfather was a slave who was owned by an ancestor of former Sen. J. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.).
"Our families were victims of this," he said. "Public monuments [to people like Jefferson] are supported by public funds."(continued)

What’s going on pure, and simple is the leftists, the Trump haters, the America haters are trying to force Trumps hand to creating what they would then decry as a Police State in order to counter the assault upon our nation by the Marxist thugs perpetrating the chaos we currently are subjected.
People need to understand that our founding father’s generation was born into slave-ownership. People need to understand that if the muslims hadn’t offered the blacks for sale and some africans hadn’t offered their family and friends for sale, that europeans wouldn’t have been able to purchase black slaves nor pass slavery as an institution down through the generations. People need to understand that white Americans fought a war to end black slavery and the south surrendered. When I see a confederate flag or monument that is what I remember, the south surrendered and it was time to move forward as Americans, free black and white Americans.

Getting really tired of this rhetoric. Most white Americans have a certain sympathy for black Americans, but the people recognized today as black leaders are demagogic con artists.
Why not point out that African-Americans are the wealthiest, most prosperous group of black people in the world?
IIRC, in Arabic, the word for African and the word for slave is the same word.
Yet how many times are Arabs admonished for racism? It was a fad for a while among some blacks to change their name to Arabic names.
I’m in favor of renaming Brown University Antifa Academy. Can you imagine the horror of young liberals when they find that the man Brown for whom the university was named was a slave trader?
