“The recently discovered death records for St Mary’s show the 796 children died from malnutrition and infectious diseases, such as measles and TB.”
And the haters want to make this into a scandal. Sad.
Records indicate that the former Tuam workhouse’s septic tank was converted specifically to serve as the body disposal site for the orphanage.
Respectful of the unmarked grave in their midst, residents long have kept the grass trimmed and built a small grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary.
What is REALLY sad is when the bigots want to pretend that this kind of a scandal didn't really happen and to speak about it is just being "hateful". Did these babies/children HAVE to be starved to death (that IS what causes MALNUTRITION - malnourished)?
An average of 23 deaths a year seems excessive. I wonder how many people were housed there at one time? Was infanticide considered preferable to abortion? It will be interesting to see what the inquiry shows.
Are you seriously suggesting that somehow this isn’t a scandal at all?
Boy, the bashers are out tonight, aren’t they? Even when the article is full of conjecture and snide innuendo, the hate just oozes forth.
>> And the haters want to make this into a scandal. Sad.
Of course. The case certainly deserves scrutiny, but the gratuitous hysteria kinda gets in the way.
Exactly. These were the bodies of dead new borns, sick new borns and small children etc. Does not prove anything about wrong doing.
I wonder how contagious these are? Even after death some diseases are still active. To put them in a septic tank so runoff in a the local water supply? Yes I believe the children died of this but I'm surprised more did not die in the community.
Malnutrition means the children were not fed! Are you defending this? I visited Ireland in 1960 and it did not appear that people didn’t have enough food.
How is it possible that orphaned children died for lack of food and then their bodes were dumped into a cistern?
It is truly sad the usual suspects are so eager to swallow what the media feeds them, as long as it is against the Church. One of them jumped to the conclusion this was due to abortion and has assigned that keyword to this thread. At least some of the truth is starting to come out.
I never used that word dumped, Catherine Corless, a local historian in Co Galway, tells The Irish Times. I never said to anyone that 800 bodies were dumped in a septic tank. That did not come from me at any point. They are not my words.
Between them the boys levered up the slab. There were skeletons thrown in there. They were all this way and that way. They werent wrapped in anything, and there were no coffins, he says. But there was no way there were 800 skeletons down that hole. Nothing like that number. I dont know where the papers got that. How many skeletons does he believe there were? About 20.
This building was an old workhouse before it was an orphanage, but I'm sure there are some here who "know" these 20 skeletons were dumped there by nuns after performing abortions.
They weren’t found in a septic tank, they were buried and death certificates exist for every last one of them..there is no scandal here just a lack of understanding of how much less child mortality is these days.
I know. Malnutrition is such a debilitating, naturally occurring phenomenon.. Why can’t we as a nation simply move on?
That's ok; for the lovers want to gloss over it as something that happened long ago.
It all balances out in the end.
Good grief! May you be healed, by the breath of God
