800 babies buried in septic tank at Irish home for unmarried mothers

Almost 800 babies and children were buried in a mass grave in Ireland near a home for unmarried mothers run by nuns, according to new research Wednesday which throws more light on the Irish Catholic Church's troubled past.

Death records suggest 796 children, from newborns to eight-year-olds, were deposited in a grave near a Catholic-run home for unmarried mothers during the 35 years it operated from 1925 to 1961.

Historian Catherine Corless, who made the discovery, says her study of death records for the St Mary's home in Tuam in County Galway suggests that a former septic tank near the home was a mass grave.

The septic tank, full to the brim with bones, was discovered in 1975 by locals when concrete slabs covering the tank broke up.

Until now, locals believed the bones mainly stemmed from the Great Irish famine of the 1840s when hundreds of thousands perished.

St Mary's, run by the Bons Secours Sisters, was one of several such 'mother and baby' homes in early 20th century Ireland.

Thousands of unmarried pregnant women -- labelled at the time as 'fallen women' -- were sent to the homes to have their babies.

The women were ostracised by the conservative-Catholic society and were often forced to hand over their children for adoption.

I’M not surprise that you’re ASSuming so much.

Being able to correctly interpret something written is not a strong suit for Catholics.

Are all baptized people by default Catholics by virtue of the fact of being baptized even if not in a Catholic church, or not?

You accused me of making a nefarious comparison when I didn’t.

Some sure provided great examples, here, of the kind of discourse that is appreciated - mature, reasonable and respectful - and some exploited the thread being placed into the "Smoky Backroom" to engage in all the personal attacks and vendettas their rage had been saving up that would have been pulled in any other thread category. Enlightening what is behind the thoughts and intents of their hearts! I just reread this thread and have to laugh at the antics of a few. It makes me think they have never outgrown their junior high school bully clique attitudes and I wonder how they have fared in the real world. Interesting what it takes to expose that in people, isn't it?

Later posts on this topic have established that it probably wasn't a septic tank; but rather a form of mass grave used in poverty-stricken areas of Europe; and that the number of skeletons glimpsed by the boys who discovered them was around 20, not 800. They made the discovery in the 1970s.

Now that Ireland is as infested with various Christ-haters, leftists and Islamists as the rest of the free world no thanks to the EU's social-engineering immigration rules, these ugly and distorted stories have been dug up to make the rounds. Wake up to the reality that you are being manipulated.

The Enforced Destruction of the Irish People Has Begun

I did see that. And that's good to know.

However, when it was being discussed, everyone thought it was a septic tank and was discussing it from that perspective, which makes it just as reprehensible because it's the justifying it when they thought it was.

Wow, kinda late to the party, aren’t you? I was wondering where you were when this thread popped up last month. And it’s not slander if I’m merely giving my opinion on a message board. If that was the case, the Catholic bashers on here would be in big trouble, lol.

"Probably" doesn't establish anything as fact! Evidence so far has shown that it WAS a type of cement "structure" for which there is no other logical explanation than it began as a septic tank - blueprints show it as such. As for how many of the nearly 800 dead children from the time the "home" was opened until it closed (approx. 35 yrs.) were placed in that structure and how many were buried elsewhere on the grounds (since no burial records exist), nobody knows. The last time I checked (a few days ago) the investigation is still going on and NO official findings have been made.

This particular story (Tuam) was NOT something just "dug up" (ironical choice of words) to inflict harm on the Catholic church in Ireland but was recent enough that a long-overdue investigation had to be started after so many outcries from regular Irish citizens and international human rights groups forced it when the story came out. Once the outcry over the story settled down and media distortions and inaccuracies were filtered out, the only manipulation going on at this point is directed towards anyone who would DARE even discuss the story by some who seem unable to tolerate criticism directed at their church, no matter how many facts are established in the end. We shouldn't forget that recent scandals have already been uncovered over clerical sex abuse by Irish priests and bishops in schools and churches - something that was covered up and swept under the rug by higher ups for a long time - so it is not unexpected that the pump was already primed for further exposure of additional negative news involving the Catholic church in Ireland. This story did not happen in a vacuum and it is disingenuous to chalk it all up to bigotry that it was published in the first place. Air and light are the best ways to resolve human failings, pretending nothing bad ever happens is not how to correct them.

It just shows a high level of interest in a religion that you apparently don’t like. I find that very revealing.

Maybe in *your* church, but the rest of us should probably listen to Jesus’ words on the subject (Mark 16:16).

Maybe in *your* church, but the rest of us should probably listen to Jesus’ words on the subject (Mark 16:16).

Mark 16:15-18 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

The salvation hinges on the believing. Baptism without believing is useless. And an infant is in no way capable of believing anything.

So if a person is baptized and doesn't believe, they are not saved. Ergo, baptism does not save.

Additionally, this is another fine example of cherry picking Scripture. If you're going to demand strict adherence to Jesus words, that means ALL of them, not just the ones you like. So the words immediately following the verse about baptism are also relevant because they are said as part of the same discourse.

So where is the Catholic church practicing snake handling? Speaking in tongues? Drinking poison? Laying hands on others for healing?

I don't see most of that being practiced by Catholics, except the tongues stuff in the Catholic charismatic movement.

Have you handled any snakes lately? Drank any poison? Laid hands on them for healing?

The pattern here is undeniable. Scandal and wrongdoing covered up until public outcry from something that cannot be hidden any more FORCES the issue.

Then it become damage control time which includes impugning those who dare to speak up.

Give it a rest, woman.

Why? Are you giving "it" a rest? I imagine we can all stop discussing it - giving it a "rest" is too close to apathy for my taste - when the results are made known after the investigation is completed, remedies are recommended and these innocent children are respectfully and appropriately memorialized. Shouldn't that be what all Christians are in favor of?

Imagine this scenario:

The Apostle Paul confronts the believers from the church at Corinth and angrily scolds them for allowing a man who was having sex with his father's wife to continue in their fellowship, even though he would not repent, confess and stop sinning. Instead of confronting the man, they were actually bragging about it (!) - probably boasting of their "tolerance" and worldly attitudes. When it comes time for the leaders to quit riding the fence and do what they know is the right thing, they instead said to Paul, "Hey, there's someone in the Ephesus church who kicked his dad out of his own house and is still living in sin there with his stepmother." What should we imagine Paul's reaction would be? Something tells me he would be incensed, tell the leaders to obey what they know is right or leave the leadership role for others Paul could trust to fulfill the requirements for an overseer. He told them , "Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?". Sin is like yeast, it spreads throughout the congregation until it is removed. Only then, when the matter was resolved, Paul would hotfoot it to Ephesus the next chance he got and get them in line, too. I seriously doubt a "they did it too" defense would do them ANY good - not only with Paul, but especially with our Lord.

You know, I almost can't blame the "media" for wanting to call attention to all the scandals. They bristle at the thought that here's an organization which claims to be THE one, true church Jesus established and nobody gets to go to heaven without going through it, but which has time after time permitted horrendous things to go on - IN THE NAME of the church - from the very top down to the lowest rung of the hierarchical ladder. Roman Catholics point the finger at all the "Protestant" pastoral offenders and decry the unfairness of the press paying more attention to the Catholic church problems than those of other churches. They see hypocrisy loud and clear. Yet, what other church makes the claims they do? Jesus said,

"Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. (Luke 12:48)

I think that is the main reason there is such a rabid response from some on this forum to anything that impugns their church - no matter how factual reports might be. We recognize that it is not a "church" which saves us, but trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ and receiving the gift of God by faith. Our church then becomes NOT a train to take us to heaven, but a fellowship of believers, each helping others to grow in grace as we travel together along the narrow path that leads to life. Sin is not something to be tolerated, but cleansed, so that we may be a new unleavened batch (pure from sin) — as we really are. (I Cor. 5:7). Then we will be to the praise of HIS glory.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will — to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:3-14)

Give it a rest, woman.

"woman"???? Are you part of the Woman Haters Club?

How dare you talk to another FReeper in such a disrespectful and condescending manner simply because she's a female!

That's a huge part of the problem in this country with disrespect on both sides. You don't own her and she does not have to listen to you simply because you're male. I won't even say a *man* because no man would talk to a woman like that.

That attitude is exactly why many female FReepers have gender neutral names. So that men with attitudes like that won't know and treat them as second class citizens.

And there is a huge difference in how men and women are treated on FR in general by many of the males who post here.
