Well either she earned it or she didn’t. If you believe she earned it, we are on the same page. If that is true, I’m very glad to hear it.
If you believe the thesis was ‘groundbreaking’, you need to back that up. From what I’ve seen it was fairly obscure & humdrum. Most dissertations languish in obscurity, as do their authors. That is just the way academia works.
There’s no need to get accusatory, or worse, w me. I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m trying to reason this out politely. If I got the impression, from a post you made, [that you thought somebody said a ‘mouthful’ by casting doubt on SADO earning her Ph.D], and that impression was in error, please correct me politely. Thank you in advance.
I got that impression from the Duke U. Press link that YOU cited, which quotes all those reviewers praising her work to high heaven. Pardon me for reading what you post.
Take your own advice.
I begin to get the picture. We’re not to be individuals here with the right to independent thought. We’re to choose up sides. If we happen on one day to agree with one faction on one topic, then henceforward we must continue to march in lockstep with that faction on all topics and never “hear” or acknowledge what another faction says about anything, much less agree with it.
When I said that Fred said a mouthful, that’s exactly what I meant. Fred said a mouthful. So did you.
So does everybody who opines here at Free Republic, and thank God and the moderator for giving us a forum, have to agree with you on every point and also live by your dictates?
I leave it to the readers to decide who’s being polite and reasonable.
Not since high school. I said a mouthful there, btw.
Why are you getting so snippy? I’m not your enemy. I’m a fellow conservative. I’m not being snippy w you. If wd be nice if we cd converse in a calm, respectful manner. Here’s hoping.
None of the quotes I cited called SADO’s work ‘groundbreaking’. I checked. In fact, the praise was fairly tepid. This was *after* her son became POTUS. Can you imagine how unenthused the reviews wd have been, had they existed, prior to Obama’s meteoric rise?
It’s interesting too that despite Obama’s fame, only three ppl cd be found to endorse the thesis-turned-book. Here are the three:
Donald Brenneis
Robert W. Hefner
Maya Soetoro-Ng
So the book was endorsed by SADO’s daughter, one of the book’s contributors, and a man named Donald Brenneis. Here’s what Brenneis had to say:
Surviving against the Odds is a work of very fine scholarship grounded in a deep understanding of Indonesia. Reading it, I learned a great deal about economic anthropology, blacksmithing (across a range of dimensions, from the supernatural to metallurgy), local life and labor in the Javanese village of Kajar, and the remarkable welter of development schemes and projects in play during the long period of S. Ann Dunhams research. Dunham knew the arcane world of development very well and her account of it is fascinating and important.
That’s not a great ‘endorsement’. He calls the subject “arcane”, and the account of it “important”. If this is the best he can do for the mother of the POTUS, can you begin to imagine what he’d have said if he were reviewing the work of a nobody? I can, but I’ll leave it at that.

Now who’s putting words in other people’s mouths? That’s just plain rude. You surprise me. I had taken you for someone else. A much politer, more reasonable person.
Techniques of Brainstorming
(Some of us use these and others misunderstand us when we do)
Got these frm wiki but they a several places on the web
Xxxxxx
Focus on quantity: This rule is a means of enhancing divergent production, aiming to facilitate problem solving through the maxim quantity breeds quality. The assumption is that the greater the number of ideas generated, the greater the chance of producing a radical and effective solution.
Withhold criticism: In brainstorming, criticism of ideas generated should be put ‘on hold’. Instead, participants should focus on extending or adding to ideas, reserving criticism for a later ‘critical stage’ of the process. By suspending judgment, participants will feel free to generate unusual ideas.
Welcome unusual ideas: To get a good and long list of ideas, unusual ideas are welcomed. They can be generated by looking from new perspectives and suspending assumptions. These new ways of thinking may provide better solutions.
Combine and improve ideas: Good ideas may be combined to form a single better good idea, as suggested by the slogan “1+1=3”. It is believed to stimulate the building of ideas by a process of association.[3]
Ditto.
And he’s got a search function which shows he has given me credit for providing material for his archives. I posted the link. In your haste to diminish me, you must have missed it.
That's it in a nutshell. If you don't go along, they'll pick at your entrails like vultures until all that's left of you is skin and bones, or you run for the hills and never return. I didn't post that piece from MacBeth for nothing. It's a witches brew.
Yet another good analogy.
“...Hed have had nothing to archive sans the underlying research.
I have no motivation to diminish the work/research Beckwith has done. I dont understand why anyone else wd either.”
AND AFTER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MY INPUT, WHY WOULD I?:

Those analogies are easy enough to come up with, I’ve been around so long I can tell a rose from a stinkweed in about as long as it takes a newt to blink an eye.

that 'old pages have rumours' sounds like it came from the brainf+rts of the very man we are discussing.
Yes, if some of the stuff rumored to be found in Foster’s office was actually there, it would have filled a couple of dump-trucks. :)
You’ve got to remember, that the husband of the half-sister of Stanley Armour Dunham whose eldest daughter married an arab and lives in Saudi Arabia with her muslim arab husband and five children, installed a computer system for a Saudi Bank which was of the same trademark as that used by the Clintons during the Whitewater scam of which I know absolutely nothing. Now I gather (from pages of rumours) that this somehow connects the deceased Cecil, whose son-in-law recently received an award from a Saudi Prince (for heaven knows what) is, as a result connected to the death of one Vince Foster, of whom I know even less, being an Aussie. However, with the benefit of distance and the passing of time, it becomes clear that the entire point of the ‘analysis’ heretofore referred to as ‘pages of rumours’ hinges upon who removed the truckloads of materials from the office of Foster. Adding it all up, one can only reach the conclusion it had to be Cecil, and considering that his relatives by marriage i.e., Mr & Mrs Dunham lived in Hawaii, that obviously ties them into the BANKing scam that was discovered sometime around 1983, when Madelyn was working at the Bank of Hawaii, funelling money goodness knows where, until she retired in 1986.
Feel free to tidy this up and for heavens sake don’t quote me, or if you do and need to supply a source, you can attribute it the man whose ‘pages of rumours’ have taken the world by storm...and if you find all this hard to believe, chuckle.
