I was under the impression that it was for territorial integrity. Fort Sumter WAS in South Carolina wasn't it?

The United States put down their violent insurrection.

Perhaps you can correct my misunderstanding of history. My recollection is that the Confederates bombarded the walls of Fort Sumter, but didn't kill anyone.

The next engagement was when the Union Army came down to invade in what was called "Bull Run", or the first battle of Manassas.

Sure, they blew up some rocks, but who started the bloodshed?
