North Carolina had not left the perpetual union, and was merely in the position of not yet joining the more perfect union.

The only “more perfect union” is referred to in the preamble but neither defined or given legal status by the Constitution. It is a concept, not a part of or legal entity of the Constituion.

It is a construct of your mind, but not anything that actually comprised or took the place of anything.
