These people are conservative? Riiiiggghhhttttt....In 1972, Democratic presidential nominee ran on a platform popularly (and accurately) characterized, at the time, as "Amnesty, Abortion and Acid."
With this year's ticket, the Republican party has actually achieved the (formerly) unthinkable: between Romney's lifelong pro-abortion advocacy, and Ryan's alarming willingness to pander on illegal immigration... the GOP is now attempting to wrest possession of two rotten platform planks, out of George McGovern's original three.
Like attracts like, politically. You aren't going to find genuine, principled movement conservatives naturally gravitating towards something so diametrically opposite their own core beliefs as that.
Romney's supporters are perfectly rendered simulacra of the man, himself: hard core, doctrinaire social liberals, only with an unvarnished fondness for the occasional tax cut or three.
