Osama bin Laden was killed at close range after he had been captured alive by U.S. commandos, one of the al-Qaeda leaders daughters told investigators, reported a pan-Arab newspaper Thursday.
Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper said Saffia, bin Ladens daughter who is believed to be 12 years old, told Pakistani security intelligence while under interrogation that she had witnessed the demise of her father at the hands of U.S. Navy Seals at a compound near the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
President Barack Obama announced Monday that the al-Qaeda leader had been tracked down and killed by U.S. Special Forces in the Pakistan city of Abbottabad Sunday.
Saffia, who was one of several of bin Ladens family members to survive the May 2 operation, said her father's killing had taken place on the ground floor of the complex, the paper said.
"She saw the Americans capture her father alive, then they shot him at point-blank range in a room at the ground floor," Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat said. "Bin Laden's [body] was dragged toward a helicopter hovering over the compound," it said.
The newspaper said Pakistani authorities had also arrested a woman among the survivors of the commando operation who claimed to be one of bin Ladens wives.
Speaking to investigators, the woman who identified herself as Amal Ahmad Abul-Fateh, said she had passed out when U.S. forces stormed the compound.
Abul-Fateh, who was wounded in the commando operation, told Pakistani authorities that she was a Yemeni national, the newspaper added.
Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat quoted Pakistani authorities as saying that two other of bin Laden's daughters Aman, 22 and Mariam, 26 had been slightly wounded during the 40-minute operation that killed the United States most-wanted man.
After medical treatment, the two women were taken to a secure location, the daily added.
Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat said Pakistani authorities were facing legal problems in indentifying survivors of bin Ladens family because they do not have any papers on them, except for bin Ladens wife, who was carrying a passport issued by the Yemeni government.
It said the Pakistani government announced it would deport bin Ladens family members to their countries of origin. A Pakistani official, however, said that this measure would be difficult to implement given that the family members do not have any travel documents.
I’m guessing it’s because the wound over his eye is an exit wound.
Note, I don’t give a damn how he died. Though, I do think under the right circumstances it would have been better to capture him, pump him for information, then quietly kill him in a painful manner.
We don't need no stinking Badgers...
Feelings should not have a place in such an operation. OBL should have been captured alive - if practical, which it was in this case - and then interrogated until he had nothing else to say. Then you can put him on trial (in the same room) and within 10 minutes convict him. No appeal.
Compared to that, simply executing him seems to be (a) too kind and (b) a waste of intelligence. Don't we want to know his entire chain of command, for example, that moved one notch up by now? If his computer had encryption or steganography, wouldn't we want his passwords?
And it’s possible that she heard nothing about it? You think she was out and about and told others her father was osama bin laden? Or had her friends come to his home?
Undocumented Terrorists...
How right you are and the road can then be paved for USA to have another o ama in office.
I can’t believe anyone’s buying this story. She’s 12, related and this is being filtered through paki intel who aren’t very happy w what went down. I really doubt if this person was in a place or position to see what went down. Sounds like the paki’s are just trying to misdirect their inability to have another army just come in and do as they please.
Undocumented Terrorists...
Strange that they need 'papers', because apparently these survivors claims are not enough to give them eligibility. I am finding the problem of the Pak authorities to be a bit amusing given the shroud of secrecy our very own leader has surrounding his origins.
EXACTLY my thoughts!! They coach people on what to say all the time in these Arab Muslim nations. Remember the woman who was bribed with candy to dance in the streets post 9-11?? You can bet this little girl was coached WELL on what to say about those “evil Americans”.... perceptions, people, perceptions. Lie about what the Americans did and make everyone believe they are monsters...that’s the agenda.
This doesn't add up.
Could you imagine the liberals today in WW2, Dresden would be the most evil act in the world at the time. We killed close to 25-55000 people. Oh but wait FDR was a democrat so they would say nothing.
lol! It’s late I guess. What I’m trying to say is that they should have kept him alive and pumped him for info. The world didn’t need to know he was still alive. They could have claimed he was killed and then made some excuses for not showing any evidence (i.e. pictures) of his death — just as they are doing now. Do you get my drift?
Not to worry. I'm sure he's feeling plenty of heat now.
I wouldn’t care if the SEALS played a round of backgammon with him prior to smoking him.
We need to get back to being cold-blooded on national security issues, and piss on the ICJ and the UN.
Yep. Assuming OBL surrendered passively...he was restrained and then shot by the Mission Commander with a pistol to the back of the head.
MAYBE to the forehead if the skipper wanted him and his men to see OBLs final flash of fear.
Most likely it was just a simple application of the tools of the trade in the most efficient and dispassionate manner.
Illegals.
Now there is someone to trust almost as much a mac daddy when their lips are moving.
One guy was shot in the chin, two guys tapped in the back of the head and UBL's described wound sounds like an exit wound. I don't think that the 12 year old would be able to identify a non-SEAL as such.
What? He wasn’t read his rights!
