A widely regarded Southern symbol of pride and states' rights is standing in the way of would-be Marines in their quest to serve their country a Confederate battle flag.
Straight out of high school, one 18-year-old Tennessee man was determined to serve his country as a Marine. His friend said he passed the pre-enlistment tests and physical exams and looked forward with excitement to the day he would ship out to boot camp.
But there would be no shouting drill instructors, no rigorous physical training and no action-packed stories for the aspiring Marine to share with his family.
Shortly before he was scheduled to leave Nashville for boot camp, the Marine Corps rejected him.
Now, the young man, who wishes to remain unnamed and declined to be interviewed, has chosen to return to school and is no longer an aspiring Marine.
"I think he just wants to let it go," said former Marine 1st Lt. Gene Andrews, a friend of the man and patriotic Southerner who served in Vietnam from 1968 through 1971. Andrews is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a group of male descendents of Confederate soldiers. He counseled the young man when he decided to become a Marine.
"He had been talking to me, and he was all fired up about joining," he told WND. "He asked my opinion of it, and I just tried to tell him the truth, good points and bad points."
When the young recruit didn't go to boot camp, Andrews learned of his rejection based on his tattoo of the Confederate battle flag on his shoulder.

Allah he needs to do it get “slay the infidels” beneath it, and he’s a shoo in for at least Major.
The Gadsden flag was flown by some southern outfits at the beginning of the War of Northern Aggression/the War Between the States/the unCivil War.
This is just more trickle-down BS from the Pretender’s office.
Similar thing are happening in these times.
That line is real.
;)
Except for Washington, Lincoln and Reagan are our greatest presidents.
We are home. LOL
The Confederacy was not a foreign power.
They attempted to be one, but it didn’t work out.
If I could get a hold of this young man, first off I’d give him my sympathy. As a fellow patriot who was also turned down by the Marines, I understand how painful this is.
However, I think that he’s been granted a gift from above, one that he will come to see in time, as I have. Right now, if he was able to enlist, he would not be serving his country, at least not the way he probably wishes to.
He will be sent over to a foreign land, not to fight against those who threaten the US, but so that a gutless politician can say he’s tough on evil, while at the same time demonstrating his “humanitarianism” by tying our soldiers hands, granting the people they are fighting a moral sanction and bending over backwards to please them, telling our soldiers to fight without a goal or definition of victory, all while letting the people they protect decry him as fool at best, a war criminal at worst.
PS: I’m in no way saying the lives lost in the War on Terror were wasted, but that their sacrifice is being spat on.
"Leaders" like 0bama will get you killed.
The South is not the Confederacy, the Confederacy is not the South. People can even respect the bravery of their Confederate soldier ancestors and still despise the Confederacy that misused the valor of its warriors.
Exactly. If times were changing in the slavery realm AZ wouldn’t have the border it does. Neither any state amongst that parallel. It isn’t the hiding place for our young slaves. Our young folks haven’t a clue about the escape from total religious captivity that gave us the power to rebel against are newest marxist regime.
Great Bratian never attacked the United States, where did you go to school?
Great Britain attacked the Declaration.
Andrew Jackson, the only POW to ever serve as President, may disagree with you.
I hope that was a tongue in cheek comment; I missed the /sarc tag.
The alternative is that you’re too stupid to recognize that the Confederacy was no more than a response to the “Barack Obama” of their day; and that can’t be...
War of 1812?
Lincoln acted generously towards the defeated Confederacy. Did he ever take action to suppress the display of its flag?
