"Can anybody else think of a conquored state that has been permitted the privilege of flying its battle standard after the conquest and surrender?"

Vichy France.

Besides which, this flag isn't being flown by the "conquered State". It's being flown by individuals. People can fly any flag that they want, or even create a flag from a non-existent State if they so desire.

I would note that, in many leftist demonstrations, the flag of the old Soviet Union is still displayed. That state also no longer exists and has a longer history of bloodshed and ignomy than the Confederacy ever had.

RESISTOR

Swear allegiance to the flag, whatever flag they offer;
Never hint at what you really feel.
Teach the children quietly for, someday, sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still.

Vichy France

Again - not the same thing. They had *A* flag for Vichy France but, on the rare occasions that they participated in the war, they fought under other colors. There seems to be some confusion between a battle standard and a national flag. There are differences. The confederacy had many flags but only the one battle standard. You are correct - I should have said "a conquored state or its citizens".

And I think it's exceptionally stupid when they do that. I'm not sure what else you expect me to say.

I’ve always loved those lyrics—never thought I would live to see a time in America when I would seriously speak them to my own child.
