“Maya and her mother returned to Honolulu in 1973 and, for three years, lived with Barack on Poki Street, just ‘ewa of Punahou School.

“My father did not live with us at that time,” Maya said. “They lived apart. They were still together and still wanted to make a go of the marriage.”

Dunham took young Maya back to Indonesia in 1976 to live with Soetoro’s mother, while Barack moved into his grandparents’ apartment on Beretania Street while he finished his high school years at Punahou.”

If Obama was a U.S. citizen in 1973, then he would have been eligible to be named as a dependent on Lolo and SAD Soetoro’s 1973 tax return.

but he wasn't named as a dependent on the Soetoro return and if his Dunham grandparents were providing more than half of his support, whether or not he was a U.S. citizen, he would have been eligible to be named as a dependent on their income tax returns.

“Maya and her mother returned to Honolulu in 1973 and, for three years, lived with Barack on Poki Street, just ‘ewa of Punahou School.

I posted that excerpt while I was laughing to myself, we've since discovered that Stanley Ann and Lolo filed a joint tax return for 1973, and that's the first we knew that Lolo was in Hawaii...as to when she returned from Indonesia with Maya, that would still be a mystery...because there's no way now I would take the word of Alice Dewey...

“My father did not live with us at that time,” Maya said. “They lived apart. They were still together and still wanted to make a go of the marriage.”

So I gather from that, Lolo wasn't living with his wife and daughter, but they did file a joint tax return...and between his 'mothers' arrival in 1973, and 1976 when she left, (as follows)who did the boy live with?

Dunham took young Maya back to Indonesia in 1976 to live with Soetoro’s mother, while Barack moved into his grandparents’ apartment on Beretania Street while he finished his high school years at Punahou.”

That quite possibly is true. How would we know who he lived with? And Whoops! What-ever happend to Lolo? They lost him somewhere in the story? Maybe he remained in Hawaii?

If Obama was a U.S. citizen in 1973, then he would have been eligible to be named as a dependent on Lolo and SAD Soetoro’s 1973 tax return.

I'm now far to confused to even begin to think about his possible citizenship, the year Stanley Ann Dunham and Maya returned to Hawaii is now more than one year removed from what was commonly understood, they didn't return on their own, they came with the 'stepfather' who didn't live with them, and zero didn't live with Madelyn and Stanley Armour until SAD retured to Indonesia in 1976, although neither parent showed him as a dependant on their (one year) joint tax return. I need a little while to get this sorted out in my head if you don't mind...

So much has changed since that article was written.

All:

I am a retired CPA. I found and checked to dependency exemption requirements in 1973. There is NO US citizen requirement for a child or grandchild living in the home with the filer or for whom 50% of the support of the child is provided, and only one party can claim the child.

Therefore either Lolo and Ann on their joint return or the Dunham grandparents could have claimed him, but not both, regardless of his citizenship.

We have the 1973 joint returm for Lolo and Ann and although they didn’t check the box for any dependent children on the first page of the return the did take the exemption for Maya but not Barry. This has NOTHING to do with custody or citizenship.

There is no credible evidence that Barry was NOT a US citizen in 1973 that I have seen.
