Charleston, S.C. (AP) -- Fred Thompson has gotten a lot of mileage out of his movie and TV fame as he runs for the Republican presidential nomination. And on Tuesday, speaking at The Citadel military college, he made sure to mention one of his recent roles: president of the United States, in the movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."
But that wasn't all good for someone campaigning in the South.
"Some people say I've got a little making up to do," he said. "The last role I played when I was in the movies — I played Ulysses S. Grant." That's the Northern Civil War general who went on to become president. But it could have been worse.

Any hardships and deaths among the civilian population of Vicskburg were due to the fact that Pemberton chose to hole up there with his army. Had Pemberton not done so then none of that would have happened. Sorry if that bothers you but as the wise man once said, war is hell.

First you'll have to point out the first time I bitched about it. The bitching about Pillow all seems to be on the Southron side, which get's all huffy at being reminded that the confederacy was loathe to taking black Union soldiers prisoner.
I'm constantly amazed at how you Southern supporters seem to think that in all recorded history only the Southern civilian population had the right not to suffer during the war that their leaders started. Sieges weren't new. Armies living off the land wasn't new. The fact that civilians die as a result of the war wasn't new. Yet you seem to think that somehow the Southern population should have been immune from all that. The fact of that matter is that I would defy you to name a single instance where a rebelling population suffered less during their war, and were punished more mildly for their actions after losing their rebellion than the Southern states were. My God, at the same time as the Vicksburg seige, China was finishing a civil war that had killed over 50 million. Eighty years later over one million civilians died in the siege at Leningrad. A handful of civilian dead in Vicksburg are nothing by comparison. Never in the course of human history has more complaining been done over less suffering than by the Southron supporters.
especially targeted for abuse/looting/plundering/assaults/robbery/arson/rape & MURDER by the "filth that flowed down from the north" were AmerIndians,Asians, Blacks (BOTH slave & free), Catholics, Jews, Latinos & the "poorest of the poor whites".
otoh, the wealthy planters of the southland were frequently protected by the union army in return for collaborating with the enemy. in other words, the elites out of the north, in return for $$$ & information, protected the "planter aristocracy" from harm, while PREYING ON the poor & minorities.
i'm sure that that is NOT a story that you DY elitists want to be told, as it makes the invaders look like the GARBAGE that many of them demonstrably were.
