I think Melinda IS a great singer, but you may be right in a way that while she can approximate, and very well everyone from Tina Turner (tonight) to Gladys Knight, and half the jazz/blues singers of the 50s and 60s, she has yet to forge a real individual identity. In that area, even with ten less years experience in life, Jordin edges her out.Not so much because she already has estabished an identity, but because at her age she seems capable of doing just about anything she wants. Those reasons constitute strong reasons for Jordin to win: her future looks better-—in 10 years she won’t wind up like Melinda, competing against prodigious 17 year olds like herself. She has not faltered or made a fool of herself yet. She is as “ready to go” as Carrie Underwood, even at her age. If I were a record producer I would be PRAYING for her.
Melinda Doolittle is the only reason we watch Idol this season.
Her excellence transcends every genre ~ she’s a genuine artist.
I know you don’t want to hear this but, quoting Sancho:
“I like him, I really like him.
Pluck me naked as a scalded chicken,
I like him!
Don’t ask me for why or wherefore,
‘Cause I don’t have a single good
“Because” or “therefore!”
You can barbecue my nose.
Make a giblet of my toes,
Make me freeze, make me fry.
Make me sigh, make me cry.
Still I’ll yell to the sky,
Though I can’t tell you why.
That I like him!”
I don’t care how many posters malign him, I still like him. I knew he wouldn’t do well w/ country music but he nailed it last week w/ Latin music. The only one who got the rhythm & the romance w/ a perfect Spanish accent.
I’m pretty much in agreement with you. Jordin knocked one out of the park tonight. I’d switch the positions of Phil and Melinda. Close between those two though. Didn’t think LaKisha was as weak as the judges said, but she wasn’t great tonight. Expected better from Chris and Blake. Sanjaya was awful.
Who should go home: Sanjaya
Who will go home: Throwing caution to the wind, I’ll say Sanjaya finally leaves.
Time to start a new list of BANNED SONGS.
Top of the list: "Did you ever know that you're my hero?" Banned Banned Banned
~But~ I'm going to psychically encourage Sanjaya to sing "Do I Make You Proud?" I think it would be such a beautiful wreck.
I agree. It’s one of the reasons she’s fallen out of favor for me. She acts like the rules for the themes don’t apply to her. On British Invasion night she could have easily handled Petula Clark. But she still chose a song that was her same old style & just barely fit the criteria. Shirley Bassey was hardly “British Invasion”.
There should be a Constitutional Amendment banning that one.
Country music is always an interesting night — I generally don’t know most of the songs, but country is a bit more melodic than pop, and usually tells more of a story.
Phil - Pretty solid performance here, and a nice way to kick off the show. This may have been the most genuine performance of the night.
Jordin - Impressive, as usual. Not perfect, though... she always seems to be a little bit out of her comfort zone in any given style, leading me to wonder... what IS her style? Still, her power and control in her lower register is almost as good as her upper, and that is impressive.
Sanjaya - Hideous. Awful. I disagree that it was the worst performance ever (he was at least in tune), but this was just the wrong song sung by the wrong singer. Taking something this raw and gritty and turning it into elevator music.
Lakisha - Actually, to disagree with the judges, this is the best I’ve seen her in a while, though she was a little too much over the top. Diction, something I’ve been on her case about, was pretty good.
Chris - This almost made Sanjaya look acceptable, but that’s too much to ask even from Chris. This was painful to listen to, emotionally flat, and I’m happy to see the judges finally stopped kissing his posterior.
Melinda - It’s Melinda, what can I say? The only knock I have is that it seemed like her diction was hurt by being behind the tempo a couple of times.
Blake - Pretty dull for a closing number. I agree that Blake just went “safe” here. It wasn’t good, it wasn’t bad... it just... was.
Bottom 3: Sanjaya, Chris, Phil (should be Blake instead, but...)
Going home: Chris
I think LaKisha is going to be in the bottom three instead of Phil. She might be the one going home too, but I hope it's Chris. I can't stand him.
LOL!
Sanjaya Gets Booed At Baseball Game
Crowd turns on the American Idol contestant...
http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news?id=30592
American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar was attending a Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles with friends over the weekend when he was booed by the crowd.
The 17 year old was apparently sat with friends enjoying the game, when a camera person spotted him and beamed up onto the big screen. A witness, who was there at the game told Star: He was just sitting there having a good time with his friends, just like a regular person, and when the Dodger camera noticed him the camera guy ran over and taped him.
Sanjaya’s face pops up on the big screen right away. At first he smiled, he seemed to like the attention. But when the entire crowd at the stadium started to boo - and it was loud! - his smile faded a bit and his eyes looked sad.
The contestant has divided the US audience during his time on the show. However he has remained defiant in the face of stern criticism from the judges as well as the audiences (which includes one American Idol fan declaring she would go on hunger strike until Sanjaya left the show).
Sanjayas sister Shyamali Malakar recently said her brother is dealing with the criticism well: He is thin-skinned as far as being empathetic and having concern for friends and family, but he does not worry about criticism. He has no trouble changing his style and crazy hairdo, he does not care what people say. He says, I am confident. I believed Simon more (when he was criticizing me) than Sanjaya believes him (now).
However, his defiance may be waning, if his appearance at the baseball game is anything to go by : “It’s like he was trying to keep a fake smile on, but you could tell he was crestfallen. He just kept waving and smiling for a few seconds more then his image went off the screen.”
1-3 Phil Stacey - 14.8 busy call attempts per vote
1-7 (B3) Jordin Sparks - 11.79
1-7 (B3) Chris Richardson - 11.66
2-7 (B3) Melinda Doolittle - 9.72
2-7 (B3) Lakisha Jones - 9.04
2-7 (B3) Blake Lewis - 8.49
2-7 (B3) Sanjaya Malakar - 8.20
LOL
According to their margin of error, only Phil is safe! I wonder if they really want to go out on a limb like that! /sarcasm
Spot on, Wolfstar. Melinda is great. An excellent singer and she seems genuinely sweet. BUT she's the same week after week. Take a chance and show us something different Melinda.
OTOH, I did loathe her outfit this week. It was tragic.
I wonder which of their charts is most accurate. According to this one, Chris is in danger.

AOL currently has:
Jordin
Sanjaya
Melinda
Blake
LaKisha
Phil
Chris
I don’t know if this resets every week or if this is an “overall” mark.
I agree. I've been annoyed by her since the night Simon made that asinine, inane "little tiger" remark. It was at that moment that I realized what utter phoniness her whole little "what, I sing good!?!?" routine is-and I suspect that not only is she calculating, the folks behind the scenes were encouraging it. Frankly, I'm sick of her. I want Jordin to win.
(And to digress: As for Sanjaya,no one but AI producers are keeping him on. Does anyone really believe the votes determine who stays, who goes, who wins? The producers get around a big table before every season begins, and they decide what kind of person is to win this season: "Last season, we let a white guy , so this season , a black female would be best." (e.g.)The singers are chosen with the decided-on criterion in mind. Then the call-in votes are tallied, sure-but the results given out may or may not be match up with the actual votes, depending on what the producers and other Important People behind the scenes want. Does anyone really believe Antonella Barba just happened to get voted off just when the so-called 'scandal" was getting interesting? Sanjaya is being kept on because the AI big shots want him on, and he'll stay on till the big shots think that he's losing them more audience share than he's gaining them. Right now, people tune in to gawk in disbelief at Sanjaya, and then the next night in hopes he'll get voted off. If people get disgusted with the whole thing and quit watching (and I'v e read ratings are slipping...)-he'll magically get voted off.Not before.)
