I became a Republican because I didn't want the government trying to cram their values down my throat.

Much to my surprise, some in the "conservative" movement want to do just that.

Enter the scare factor. Somehow being dictated to does not sit well with most people.

You make a good point about the government cramming their values down our throats. I discovered my conservatism (or liberalism depending on who is on the panel) at a very liberal university for just this reason.
