Atlanta police went to a home on Neal Street in Atlanta last evening to execute a search warrant. When they kicked the door in the only occupant of the home, a 92-year-old woman, started shooting. She hit all three police officers. One in the thigh, one in the arm and another in the shoulder. All police officers will be OK. The woman will not. She was shot and killed by the police.
I'm not blaming the cops here. Not at all. They had a valid search warrant, and they say they were at the right address. Shots were fired, three cops hit, and they returned fire. A 92-year-old woman who was so afraid of crime in her neighborhood that she had burglar bars on every door and window, is now dead.
The blame lies on this idiotic drug war we're waging. We have all the studies we need, all of the comprehensive data is in. We can do a much more effective job of reducing drug use in this country if we'll just take a portion of this money we spend for law enforcement and spend it on treatment programs. A Rand study showed that we can reduce illicit drug usage in this country a specified amount through treatment programs at about 10% of the cost of reducing drug usage by that same amount through criminalization and law enforcement.
There's just something in the American psyche that demands that drug users be punished instead of treated and rehabilitated. We think they're stupid and ignorant for getting mixed up with those drugs in the first place. And you know what? We're right? But look at the messages we send to our children every single day with cigarettes, alcohol, and an endless stream of drug ads on television and in magazines. Drug culture? You bet we have.

Thought you may be interested in this Web site. Lots of straight talk on the WOD.
Many thanks Zon. I am involved with your post 538. I will check this next. Fight on my friend. Fight for what is right.

...you want to be the moralistic imterpreter of that which you see before you.Morality and all of those associated ideals are rooted entirely in the presupposition some higher power defines what is correct for human behavior.
I am an atheist, I do not bend my knee in acquiescence to your idols...
Like I said earlier: you liberal-tarians want anarchy and when a fellow like myself is all too willing to give it to you, you will pee all over yourselves and run to the nanny state, crying for protection by the jackbooted thugs you claim to hate.

As we do not acquiesce to your standards. I'd be willing to bet who would do the peein. Hatred is a seed. Planted early and nurtured it becomes an overwhelming growth. Perhaps the seed was never planted for you. Not all have been left un tilled. Perhaps you are very lucky. Can you predict the future? Perhaps they will get around to you sooner or later. Your complacence may cost you freedoms that you appreciate at some point before you pass this ugly world.

LEAP. Outstanding!. I guess some would consider those cops traitors. I think they are truthful.
To: Phantom Patriot
In general, drug prohibition warriors are traitors of honesty and rationality. Persons that oppose drug prohibition side with honesty and rationality. Leastwise that's what my research has identified over the past eight years.
I would pay good money to see Drug Czar John Walters debate one of the LEAP founders. Unfortunately Walters has refused every invitation.

"IMHO it is very cruel punishment for some minuscule plant that grows from the earth."Poppies?

"BTW, Mr. Barnett isn't "of" Chief Justice Marshal."Ease ... up.
It never occurred to you that there was a typo and it was supposed to read, "Gosh, who to believe -- Mr. Barnett or Chief Justice Marshall?"

"I guess some would consider those cops traitors. I think they are truthful."I think they're ignorant and lazy. Less people to arrest if drugs are legal, doncha know.
Oh, and they wish to legalize ALL drugs. You want that? You agree with that?
Still think these guys are "outstanding"?

"My biggest concern is the misclassification of marijuana."How should it be classified?

I have had some rational discussions with you in the past. Even though we have disagreed we have not yet resorted to insults. I hope that will continue. Yes I do. I have been fortunate in the fact that I have some age and with that comes experience. I have been able to associate with what some would consider low class people who have used drugs. Hard drugs. I have also had the opportunity to associate with some very high class, and political people. I understand both sides very well. This is an advantage that most law makers do not experience. Law enforcement usually only experience things on that level. Many times seeing the worst of everything. To understand it is a benefit. Now before you begin to think the worst of me I must tell you that during my life many people have stopped using hard drugs because of me and my influence. But I believe in legalization because under most instances these people have a very low education level. As with many I know that have tried hard drugs they had enough smarts to realize that it was not worth it and it was doing their bodies much harm rapidly. Those that cannot break it on their own need help. By the Church or even the Gov. It would be cheaper than the war we cannot gain ground on. Those officers were doing exactly what I expect them to do. Tell The truth. I know you don't believe me but, the Gov. has misled you with their stats, commercials, and frying pans. But only people with experience can tell you the truth. But we have been demonized so people like yourself will not listen. A wise man once told me you can make stats say anything you want. And I'll tell you sir the entire political system is nothing more than high priced theater. Remember, I'm not asking you to believe me just remember what was said. I could get lost on this topic so I will yield for your response. Hope it was clear I tried to cover a wide range there.

How should it be classified?
Well, Even though IMHO I believe it to be safer than alcohol. It should be classified in the same category and regulated in a similar manner.

Hatred is a seed. Wrong, hate is a perfectly valid human emotion. Do you think "hate" is a "sin" of some sort?

Not advocating religion here. Merely illustrating how hatred is born and nurtured. I think the statement in full context makes more sense.
To: Phantom Patriot
Not advocating religion here.Sure you are, you are just trying to hide it behind a mask like actors in ancient Greek drama (one form of idolatry, among others in pagan Greece).

Ya Know R.P. perhaps this comparison may make sense. I'll bet you that if Custer had a choice he would re think his position in his war. We are using a Custer mentality when I believe a different approach may do a better job and serve the Country and the people better. These are our fellow citizens we are waging a war against not the drug they are using. We should help our fellow citizens when applicable not send in Storm troopers who are fired up anyway due to the real threats they face everday. That's how accidental killings occur. As someone told me a thief should not suffer the death penalty, neither should someone at home using for themselves. Remember R. P I'm not advocating protecting violent criminals. Or selling to children or anything like that.

Well, believe what you wish I'm not a religious person. Studied Native American religion for awhile that's about as close as it gets.
I believe my comment explains more like the bully that picks on you every day. At first you may not hate them but as time goes on with repeated bullying you begin too. Then if not stopped it becomes larger than yourself.

"How should it be classified?"
Like alcohol or tobacco.
Here's some entertainment for you:
John Stossel
"...The son of Duke "Death Penalty for Drug Kingpins" Cunningham, R-Calif., was convicted for possession of 400 pounds of marijuana. Mother Jones reported that in court, the congressman cried and pleaded for mercy, explaining that his son "has a good heart. He works hard." The congressman — who denounced "soft-on-crime liberal judges" and railed against "reduced mandatory-minimum sentences for drug trafficking" (and who himself is now in prison for taking bribes) — won for his son the mercy he fought to deny others: half the federal "mandatory" minimum sentence..."
"...All too often, officials protect themselves and their families from the punishments they set up for the rest of us. Using drugs might be a crime for you, but it's a joke for someone named Bush or Clinton.
Our rulers make laws to control and punish you and your family for doing the very acts they flaunted in their youth.
Smoking pot is not a big deal. If the politicians have enough common sense to know that their lives shouldn't be ruined over a little drug use, they should also have enough common decency to recognize that neither should anyone else's."

Maybe that is what it takes for some to gain the courage to defeat them. You think hatred is a "sin" of some sort? You did not answer the question...
To: Phantom Patriot
You wish to legalize all drugs. That's absolute insanity. We are so far apart on this issue, there's no debating it.
"It would be cheaper than the war"
You cannot possibly know that.
"But only people with experience can tell you the truth."
And what would that be? Drugs are good? Drugs are safe? Drugs don't ruin lives? Drugs don't place a burden on others? Drugs aren't degrading to the human spirit?
What could they possibly tell me? I really would like to know what you're talking about.
