Ex-border agents sentenced for shooting smuggler
AP
EL PASO, Texas -- Two former U.S. Border Patrol agents were each sentenced Thursday to more than a decade in federal prison for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler and then trying to cover it up.
Ignacio Ramos was sentenced to 11 years and one day, and Jose Alonso Compean was sentenced to 12 years. Both were fired after their convictions on several charges including assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction of justice, and a civil rights violation.
The men, neither of whom spoke in court, will be allowed to turn themselves in Jan. 17.
The agents have proclaimed their innocence in the Feb. 17, 2005, shooting of admitted drug smuggler Osvlado Aldrete Davila.
Aldrete was shot in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande into Mexico after a confrontation with Ramos and Compean. The agents said they shot in self defense, but prosecutors charged that they had no reason to shoot at the fleeing man, who later claimed he was unarmed.
Since their convictions, support for the agents has swelled. Several prominent law makers, including U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, the Wisconsin Republican who chairs the House judiciary committee, have even called for a Congressional investigation into the agents' prosecutions.
The union representing most rank and file Border Patrol agents established a legal defense fund. And civilian border watch groups have asked the U.S. Attorney General's office to review the case and throw out the jury's guilty verdicts.
Sorry pal, "border bots" represent about 80% of this nation. The GOP's performance on this invasion has been horrible. They will lose their comfy little jobs, slithering around Georgetown and Capitol Hill bars and restaurants. Bush should be impeached over this border horror. If you are a Texan, as many "Bush Bots" seem to be, you want to get your barn work done at a very nice price, and you want illegals as an underclass. I don't want my country's immigration policy driven by Texans with a need for slave labor. The GOP is fried, done and over, until they wander back to reality.
Please read the thread to see where folks are coming from. Maybe "border 'bots" was the wrong term when I meant the OBL Brigade? Not sure now... getting up in years ... heh heh.
There are some silver linings in the near future coming out of this administration believe it not.
...or not.
Hmmmm. OKay, I believe.
And then again . . .
;^)
Hold not thy breath.
Hey, the earthquake was NOT Bush's fault, okay?!! And calling for his impeachment, well, that's been tried before ... by posters emeriti.
"Sorry pal, "border bots" represent about 80% of this nation"
I do believe the other poster was referring to "open border bots".
YES, that's it! You KNEW what I meant!
:)
This was a bad day.
A VERY bad day...
We need leaders who are more like Theodore Roosevelt - real men who don't worry about popularity polls who just know the difference between right and wrong and balance that with the power available to them. This guy has failed to uphold his duty to protect our nation from invasion and there's no defense you can mount to deny it. You can talk about court appointments and the like but the subject article illustrating the great injustice put on these two agents reveals that the presiding judge is a Bush appointee...just like the Attorney General who said outright that he doesn't regard people flowing over our borders to be a problem. Don't mind that the President acknowledged that there's 300,000+ hard criminals running around due to negligence.
If you're upset about conservatives threatening to leave the Republican Party you need to ask yourself why the Republican Party decided to emulate the Democrats, shoved the conservatives and religious aside for business interests and gave their enemies another Vietnam when everyone I know and talk to agree that wars are to WIN, not perpetuate (which betrays the youngsters we have fighting). This Administration has conducted this war as an exercise in contractor profit, which not only betrays the youth who have died and been maimed for it but also severely underestimates the fanaticism of the Islamic cult and the extremes it's willing to go to eliminate us (U.S.). Our troops have to have full clearance to wipe out whole regions with impunity in a war against an enemy that would have the entire planet under the dominance of Islamic totalitarianism. Just like the WWII Japanese they will not understand anything less than the amount of force they themselves are willing to inflict.
That's funny and all. Look, this border situation is way out of control. Nothing can excuse the daily death, rape, robbery and societal disruption caused by this administration's failure to enforce our Constitution and our nation's border sovereignty. What is the explanation? Cheap lawn care, cheap chicken processing. Who wins with that? Do you?
Thanks. Typo, "open border bots", and I stand corrected.
Post #594 is an excellent post.
For some reason this has been placed on the back pages. I thought you might want to read it.
One can read through so much weasiling BS. I was reminded earlier of how General Andrew Jackson was sent down to Florida and kicked butt so hard that he could have opened up wars with two stronger world powers of that time.
That he did what he did so decisively made them reconfigure their strategy. America today no longer deals from it's position of strenth, usually opting to make endless deals and concessions which are equivilent to the proverbial "Death of a Thousand Cuts".
We need to take the lead of our UN guy John Bolton's basic attitude of "Very funny...here's what we demand."
Are you old enough to vote yet?
